KTOU License (Kenji’s Terms of Use License)
Copyright (c) [YEAR] [TheDevKenji / Seth Bryett]. All rights reserved, except as granted below.
Hi! This license is written to be readable by anyone. I want people to build on, showcase, and learn from my work, as long as nobody takes it and passes it off as theirs or re-releases it. The sections below are the legally binding terms.
1. Definitions
-
"The Mod" means [THE MOD THIS LICENSE IS APPLIED UNDER], in compiled form (e.g. the .jar file), in source form, and all of its parts.
-
"Source Code" means the human-readable programming code of the Mod.
-
"Assets" means everything in the Mod that isn't Source Code, including textures, models, animations, sounds, language files, JSON data files (recipes, loot tables, advancements, etc.), and any other resource files.
-
"Official Platforms" means the platforms where I (the Author) publish the Mod, such as CurseForge, Modrinth, and GitHub, under my own account.
-
"Author" means me, the copyright holder named above.
2. Redistribution
You may not redistribute the Mod, in original or modified form, without my written permission. This includes re-uploading it to any website, launcher, mirror, or file host, and publishing it under a different name.
The only exceptions are the ones in Sections 4 and 7 (modpacks and videos), and the Author's own official downloads.
3. Addons, fixes, and extensions (no permission needed)
You are welcome to create a separate mod that adds to, fixes, or extends the Mod, without asking me. For example, an addon, a compatibility patch, or a bug-fix mod. To qualify, your project must:
-
Be a separate project that requires the Mod to be installed in order to work (it depends on my Mod rather than containing it);
-
Not include or bundle a copy of the Mod or its Assets; and
-
Not serve as a replacement for the Mod. If someone could install your project instead of mine and get roughly the same thing, it's a replacement, not an extension.
4. Remakes, ports, and remasters (ask first)
If you want to re-make the Mod, port it to a different Minecraft version or mod loader (newer or older), remaster it, or otherwise publish a version of it that does what the Mod does, you must get my permission first, before you start publishing anything.
Please don't be shy about asking! I'll most likely say yes, depending on the reason, and I'm happy to chat about it. I just want to know about it first. You can reach me at [Email: trueblue24001@gmail.com OR Discord: thunderstrike597].
5. Source Code
You may use my Source Code in your own projects, in any way that is transformative, without asking me. That includes borrowing snippets, methods, or even whole classes if you need them, and learning from it, adapting it, and building something new with it.
The one big rule: your project has to be its own thing. Use of the Source Code is not permitted if the result is:
-
the Mod itself, or a copy, clone, re-skin, re-upload, or re-release of it (whether or not you changed names, branding, or small details);
-
a port, remake, or remaster of the Mod (these fall under Section 4 and need my permission first); or
-
a substitute that a reasonable player would see as basically the same mod as mine.
In short, Section 5 never overrides Sections 2 and 4. Having access to the Source Code does not give you the right to redistribute the Mod or republish it in any form. If you aren't sure whether your use is transformative, just ask me.
When you reuse a substantial portion of my code (more than a few lines), please give credit, e.g. a note in your source or README saying "contains code from [THE MOD THIS LICENSE IS APPLIED UNDER] by [TheDevKenji]". This is a request, not a requirement, for small snippets.
6. Assets
You may not use, copy, modify, or redistribute any of the Mod's Assets (textures, models, animations, sounds, JSON files, etc.) in any way without my permission. This applies even if you are using the Mod's Source Code under Section 5; the Source Code permission does not cover Assets.
If you'd like to use something, just message me directly and ask. I'll likely say yes depending on what it is and how it's being used, so don't hesitate to reach out.
7. Videos, streams, and media
You may feature the Mod in any kind of video or media: YouTube videos, streams, shorts, reviews, tutorials, articles, screenshots, and so on, including monetized content. No permission or credit is required (though a link to the Mod is always appreciated!).
8. Modpacks
You may include the Mod in modpacks, in any way, with no restrictions, as long as the Mod is obtained from and distributed through an Official Platform (for example, using the CurseForge or Modrinth modpack system, which downloads the Mod from my page). You may not bundle a copy of the Mod from a different source, or distribute it through the modpack outside of the Official Platform's distribution system.
9. Permission and revocation
Any permission I give you under this license applies only as long as you follow its terms. If you break the terms, your permissions end automatically, and I may ask you to take down whatever infringes. Where I give permission individually (Sections 4 and 6), I may set conditions, and it isn't transferable to others unless I say so.
10. Your own contributions
If you contribute code or assets to the official Mod (e.g. a pull request), you keep the copyright to your contribution, but you grant me a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, modify, and distribute it as part of the Mod and its future versions.
11. No warranty
The Mod is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. The Author is not liable for any damage, data loss, or other issues arising from using the Mod, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
12. Misc
-
Nothing in this license limits any rights you have under applicable law (such as fair use or fair dealing).
-
If any part of this license is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
-
I may release future versions of the Mod under different terms, but versions you already have keep the license they were released under.
