Alternative Realities
Alternative Realities separates player progression across dimensions by giving each configured dimension group its own inventory state.
Instead of carrying the same equipment everywhere, entering another reality can mean starting with a different set of tools, armor, experience, and accessories. Dimensions can remain fully independent or be assigned to shared groups, allowing modpack developers and server owners to decide which worlds belong to the same progression path.
This makes Alternative Realities useful for dimension-based progression packs, challenge servers, isolated adventure worlds, gated technology systems, and modpacks where entering a new dimension should feel like entering a genuinely separate reality.
Dimension Inventory Groups
Every dimension can be assigned to a named inventory group.
Dimensions assigned to the same group share their stored player state. Dimensions assigned to different groups remain separate.
When a player changes groups, Alternative Realities saves the state of the group they are leaving and restores the state of the group they are entering.
Stored Player Data
Alternative Realities can separate and restore:
Main inventory
Hotbar
Armor
Offhand
Experience
Ender Chest contents
Curios slots on supported Forge and NeoForge installations
Trinkets slots on supported Fabric installations
Experience and Ender Chest separation are configurable. This allows servers to keep a universal Ender Chest or experience level while still separating ordinary inventory, or isolate everything for stricter progression.
Curios and Trinkets support is optional. Alternative Realities continues to function when those mods are not installed.
Death Handling
Death clears the inventory associated with the dimension group where the player died.
If a player dies in the Nether, the Nether group loses its carried inventory, armor, offhand items, and accessory contents. Inventories stored in other groups are unaffected.
Ender Chest contents are preserved on death.
This prevents dropped items from being restored later through an older saved dimension snapshot while keeping each reality independent.
Configurable Entry Commands
Each dimension group can run commands when a player enters it.
This can be used to:
Give starter equipment
Apply status effects
Display titles or messages
Trigger advancement or quest systems
Set spawn-related state
Integrate with other command-driven mods
Entry commands can be configured to run only once per player or every time the player enters the group.
Portal Restrictions
Alternative Realities includes configurable restrictions intended to prevent players from bypassing separated progression through portals.
Servers can restrict the transfer of:
Dropped items
Projectiles
Mobs
Other portal-traveling entities
These controls help prevent players from throwing equipment through a portal, pushing storage mobs between realities, or otherwise moving resources around the intended inventory swap.
Configuration
Configuration files are generated after the game or server is launched for the first time.
They allow pack developers and server owners to control:
Dimension-to-group assignments
Experience separation
Ender Chest separation
Entry commands
One-time or repeated command execution
Portal restrictions
Optional integration behavior
A restart is recommended after changing fundamental dimension-group assignments. Some settings can also be reloaded with the provided command.
