Description
Allays that feel like real little companions. Tame them, give them a home, put them to work, and take one along on your adventures. There are nine allay variants. Each one lives in its own part of the world and has its own power.
NeoForge 1.21.1 · Requires GeckoLib · Optional: Jade, Xaero's Minimap, Critters and Companions, Curios or Accessories, Starcatcher
🚧 Work in progress: Allay Folks is still being actively built and expanded. New allays, jobs and features are added often, and some things may change between updates. Bugs or ideas? Message me on Discord: YETSHADOW.
Quick Start
- Find an allay. Look in its home biome, or craft an Allay Compass and follow it to the nearest allay home.
- Earn its trust. Wild allays are shy. Stand still with its favorite food in your hand and wait a few seconds. It comes over.
- Feed it. One bite and it's yours.
- Give it a home. Catch it in a Jar, then right-click an Allay Door with the jar.
- Give it a job. Hold the Allay Interact key (Left Shift by default) and right-click your allay with a tool. Then right-click a chest to make that its work chest.
The Allays
| Allay | Where it lives | Favorite food |
|---|---|---|
| Allay | Plains, meadows, forests | Apple |
| Axolotl Allay | Lush caves | Glow berries |
| Bee Allay | Flower forests, meadows, sunflower plains | Honeycomb, honey bottle |
| Blaze Allay (new) | Nether wastes, basalt deltas | Blaze powder, fire charge |
| Ender Allay | Outer End islands | Chorus fruit, ender pearl, eye of ender |
| Mushroom Allay | Mushroom fields, dark forests | Red or brown mushroom |
| Sculk Allay | Some Ancient Cities | Echo shard |
| Slime Allay | Swamps, mangrove swamps | Slimeball |
| Undead Allay | Soul sand valleys | Nether wart |
Each variant has its own touch:
- Mushroom Allay: feed it a mushroom and its cap changes to that mushroom's color. This works with modded mushrooms too.
- Ender Allay: when it's idle, it sometimes teleports a few blocks away, like an Enderman.
- Bee Allay: it lives in a beehive-shaped home.
- Blaze Allay: it has no wings and floats on two rings of spinning blaze rods instead, trailing a little smoke. It's immune to fire and lava.
- Sculk Allay: its home is hidden inside an Ancient City.
- Undead Allay: give it up to 3 wither skeleton skulls and it transforms each time. With 1 skull it turns black like a wither skeleton, with 2 it takes the Wither's colours, and with 3 it becomes a tiny three-headed Wither. Holding a skull attracts it, like its food does.
Spawning: every allay home is generated in the world with an allay living inside. Homes also spawn in biomes from Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes We've Gone and other mods that use the shared biome tags. When a vanilla allay appears (in a pillager outpost, a woodland mansion, from a spawn egg, and so on), it's replaced by the variant that fits the biome. Modded biomes count too.
Shy wild allays: a wild allay hides in its home, or flies away, when you get too close. Sprinting scares it from far away, walking from closer, and standing still or sneaking only from right up close. Stand still holding its favorite food for about 5 seconds and it reaches out with both arms and comes to you. A wild allay only eats from someone it trusts, so rushing up and clicking it doesn't work: let it come to you first.
Allay Boons (Powers)
Every variant except the plain Allay gives you a power, but only while it's your companion, following you or sitting on your shoulder. Your inventory shows an Allay Boons entry with your allay's face, and its tooltip lists what it gives you.
| Allay | Boon | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Axolotl | Air Bubble | When your head is under water, it blows you an air bubble. You can breathe and swim faster, and it stays right next to you while you swim. |
| Axolotl | Boat Push | When you steer a boat on water, it swims to the back of the boat and pushes, so you go faster. The boat breaks through lily pads and frogspawn. |
| Slime | Jelly Boots | Slime cubes on your feet. Falls of up to 16 blocks bounce you without any damage. Longer falls still bounce, and the extra height only does half damage. Sneak to land without bouncing. |
| Sculk | Sculk Veil | Blinds hostile mobs that can see you, with dark smoke over their heads. They can't target you until they get hurt or you come within 2 blocks. Each mob can only be blinded once. Wardens and bosses are immune. |
| Mushroom | Spore Friend | Spore particles drift around it. Animals within 10 blocks come over to you, and shy ones like cats, foxes and rabbits stop running away. |
| Bee | Bee Friend | Bees never get angry at you, so you can harvest hives without smoke. Now and then it throws honey at a hostile mob coming for you. The honey makes a puddle that slows every hostile mob in it to cobweb speed for 8 seconds. |
| Ender | Pearl Maker | Makes an ender pearl every 3 minutes, or every 8 if its hands are full. Your own ender pearls don't hurt you. |
| Blaze | Fire Ward | Gives you one extra level of Fire Protection on top of your armour, and fire on you goes out 3 times faster. |
| Undead | Grave Guard | Fights the hostile mobs that you hit or that hit you. It gets stronger with each wither skull (below). |
Grave Guard by wither skulls:
| Skulls | Weapon |
|---|---|
| 0 | A little bow with weak arrows |
| 1 | A stone sword |
| 2 | A stronger sword that gives Wither |
| 3 | The sword up close, and small wither skulls from range. The skulls explode without breaking blocks. |
The Undead Allay only attacks mobs that are hostile to you, never you, your pets or animals. The bow or sword only shows in its hands while it fights.
Allay Compass
- Craft: a compass surrounded by 8 amethyst shards.
- Buy: from journeyman cartographers and wandering traders.
- Find: in chests in cartographer houses, pillager outposts and woodland mansions.
The compass points to the nearest allay home you haven't found yet. When you reach a home it chimes and moves on to the next one. This works as long as the compass is anywhere in your inventory. All your compasses remember the homes you've found.
- Height: the needle's colour tells you if you're at the home's height. Teal-blue means you're at about the right height, and it turns purple the further above or below you are.
- Charm slot: with Curios or Accessories, you can wear the compass in the charm slot. It keeps working there and shows a small compass on your HUD above the XP level.
Your Companion
You can own as many allays as you like, but only one can be your companion at a time. Your companion follows you or rides on your shoulder. When you pick a new companion, the old one flies home (or wanders around where you left it if it has no home). Taming a wild allay makes it your companion right away.
Controls
Allay Interact is a key you can rebind in the controls menu. It's Left Shift by default.
| What you want | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Tame it | Right-click it with its favorite food |
| Pet it | Right-click it with an empty hand |
| Give it an item, tool or light | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with the item |
| Take the item back | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with an empty hand |
| Make it follow you or stay | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with an empty hand while it holds nothing |
| Put it on your shoulder | Right-click it while it holds a light (torch, lantern…) |
| Take it off your shoulder | Right-click it again, or hold Allay Interact and right-click any block with an empty hand |
| Use the station it carries | Right-click it |
| Put a helmet on it | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with the helmet |
| Take the helmet off | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with shears |
| Put on its Halloween costume | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with a carved pumpkin (shears take it off) |
| Catch it in a jar | Right-click it with a Jar |
| Give the Undead Allay a skull | Right-click it with a wither skeleton skull |
What your companion can do
- Shoulder riding: it sits on your shoulder, swaps sides and looks around.
- Light: while it holds a torch, lantern, lava bucket or any other light-giving item, it lights up the area around it and follows you to light your way. This works with modded light items. Its own glow turns off if LambDynamicLights is installed, so the two don't clash.
- Portable stations: give it a chest, barrel, shulker box, ender chest, crafting table, stonecutter, smithing table, loom, cartography table, grindstone, anvil, enchanting table, furnace, smoker or blast furnace. Right-click it to open that block from anywhere. A furnace it carries keeps cooking. When you take the station back, everything inside it comes with it.
- Teleports: it comes with you through commands, ender pearls, portals and waystones, even to another dimension. Every allay following you, on your shoulder or lighting your way comes along. They only appear in spots you aren't looking at.
- Lost allay? Type
/allayfolks callto bring your companion back to you, even from far away or another dimension. Any player can use it, no cheats needed. - Death guide: if it's with you when you die, it doesn't die. It remembers where you fell and comes to you when you respawn. Right-click it within 30 seconds and it puts on a hooded death robe, holds a scythe and a soul lantern, grows bone wings and leads you back to your items. If you wait too long, it gives you the coordinates in chat.
- Helmet: it can wear any helmet as armor.
Jar
- Craft: a wooden slab over a glass block.
- Catch your tamed allay in the jar to carry it around. The jar's tooltip shows which allay is inside and where its home is.
- Right-click a block with the filled jar to let the allay out there.
- Sneak and right-click to place the jar as a block, with the allay flying around inside and watching what's nearby. Right-click the placed jar with an empty hand to let it out. The empty jar can be placed too.
- 3D jar: in your inventory and hand, the jar shows the real animated allay or critter inside, turning to face you. It shows that exact mob, with its skulls, outfit and held item.
- Catch critters: an empty Jar also catches small mobs that fit inside it (about 0.5 × 0.5 blocks), from vanilla or any mod: silverfish, endermites, frogs, and the bugs from Critters and Companions (ladybugs, dragonflies, stick bugs, weevils…). Baby animals and water mobs can't be caught, and neither can another player's tamed critter. Datapacks can add mobs with the
allayfolks:jar_catchabletag.
Homes
Allays live behind an Allay Door. Craft it from 5 planks in a plus shape. Each home holds one allay.
Giving your allay a home:
- Place an Allay Door on a wall.
- Catch your tamed allay in a Jar.
- Right-click the door with the jar. The allay moves in, and the empty jar goes back in your hand.
The door has to be free, since another allay can't already live there. Only your own tamed allays can move in. Wild allays you find in generated homes already live there.
Once it has a home, your allay:
- wanders near its home and sleeps inside at night, in pajamas and a nightcap
- goes inside when it rains or thunders, or when a hostile mob comes near
- comes out in the morning to drink a mug of coffee
- answers when you knock (right-click the door with an empty hand): if it's out, it hurries home; if it's inside, it comes out to greet you, even at night in its pajamas
Mine the door with Silk Touch to take the allay along with it. The door's tooltip shows that an allay is inside.
Jobs
Give a tamed allay a tool and it starts that job and puts on matching work clothes. Then, within a few seconds, right-click a chest to make it the allay's work chest. The chest must be within 32 blocks of the allay's home. You can still pick it if the allay went inside its home meanwhile. The allay works within 32 blocks of that chest and carries everything back to it, one load per trip. A small icon floats above each work chest to show which jobs use it.
| Job | Tool | What it does | Outfit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farmer | Hoe | Harvests ripe crops, melons, pumpkins, sugar cane and berries, replants them and brings the harvest back. Works with most modded crops, and picks modded fruit from leaves, bushes and vines (like Vinery's). | Straw hat |
| Lumberjack | Axe | Cuts down fully grown natural trees, clears the leaves and replants a sapling. It never touches player-placed logs, buildings or allay homes. | Plaid flannel shirt and fur trapper hat |
| Fisher | Fishing rod | Fishes from the shore or from a little boat, and reels in vanilla fishing loot: fish, junk and treasure. The catch flies over to it. Lure and Luck of the Sea help. With Starcatcher installed, it catches that mod's fish too, by the mod's own rules for each spot. | Fisherman's hat and fishing vest |
| Shepherd | Shears | Shears every sheep that has wool and brings back wool in each sheep's color. | Villager shepherd coat and cap, with a crook |
| Collector | Hopper or bundle | Picks up items lying on the ground around its chest, such as mob drops and saplings. | – |
| Miner | Pickaxe | Given while it follows you (no chest needed). In caves it spots ore you can see, mines the whole vein, digging through stone in the way, and brings the ore and XP to your inventory. Only you see an outline or ping marking the vein it's on. Modded ores work too. | Miner's cap with a candle that lights the cave, overalls |
| Gardener | Bucket | Needs no chest. It waters plants around your other allays' work areas with its watering can, sometimes with a bone-meal effect, and refills at nearby water. | Watering can |
Tools matter. Without enchantments, allays work slowly. Efficiency makes them faster, and a better tool also helps, but even a netherite tool with Efficiency V is slower than a player. Fortune or Looting on shears gives extra wool. Modded tools work too.
Work hours: workers sleep at home at night. Rainy days are days off for every job except the fisher, since rain is great fishing weather. On those days the others stay inside.
Put a farmer, a lumberjack and a gardener together and you have a little village that runs itself.
Halloween
From Oct 20 to Nov 3 (vanilla's Halloween dates), every allay dresses up in its own costume, wild ones included. On any other day, hold Allay Interact and give your allay a carved pumpkin to put its costume on, and use shears to take it back off.
| Allay | Costume |
|---|---|
| Allay | Witch, with a long robe |
| Axolotl Allay | Pumpkin |
| Mushroom Allay | Scarecrow |
| Sculk Allay | Ghost (a sheet with eye holes) |
| Slime Allay | Frankenstein |
| Undead Allay | Mummy, at every skull stage (the extra heads get wrapped too) |
| Bee Allay | Spider, with cobweb wings and eight legs |
| Blaze Allay | Ladybug |
| Ender Allay | Vampire, with bat wings and little fangs |
Costumed allays keep working (their work clothes come off for it) and now and then play a little prank with their costume's sound in a squeaky voice.
Sweet dreams... during the Halloween dates, going to sleep has a small chance of a nightmare. It's only a vision and it can't hurt you.
Wandering Trader Allay
Once in a while, a Wandering Trader Allay comes to visit: a random allay variant in a traveller's hat and backpack, with a staff. It arrives like the vanilla wandering trader and leaves after 2 days. Right-click it to trade: it sells everything a wandering trader does, plus a couple of allay items such as Jars, Allay Compasses and Allay Doors. It can't be tamed.
Little Details
- Idle allays get curious and drift over to look at nearby animals, and sometimes bring them a flower.
- Allays sometimes pick a flower and give it to another allay, who keeps it and does a happy twirl.
- Play a jukebox and every allay within 32 blocks flies over to dance, even the ones that are working. Workers go back to their jobs when the song ends. Vanilla amethyst duplication still works while they dance.
- Now and then, an idle allay with no job hops on a horse or another big animal and goes for a ride.
- You can eat cake straight from an allay's hands, one slice at a time. This works with modded cakes too.
- Allays hold a big dripleaf umbrella when it rains.
- Allays fly over fences and stay above tall grass.
- Allays aren't scared of calm neutral mobs like endermen.
- Allays render as far away as animals.
- Jade: tooltips show an allay's owner, its job and work chest, and the Undead Allay's skull count. A home's tooltip shows who lives there.
- Xaero's Minimap: each allay has its own small icon on the map, and tamed allays show as pets.
Config
config/allayfolks-common.toml lets you turn features on or off. This is useful for modpacks.
| Section | Options |
|---|---|
| World | Replace vanilla allays · Generate allay homes · Sculk homes in Ancient Cities · How rare Sculk homes are (ancientCityHomeSpacing: 1 = every city, 2 = about 1 in 4, 3 = about 1 in 9…) · Minimum distance between allay homes (allayHomeMinDistance, default 96 blocks, 0 = off) · Compass trades |
| Companion | Death guide · Following you through teleports |
| Jobs | Turn each job on or off: farmer, lumberjack, fisher, gardener, shepherd, collector, miner · How far the miner can go from you (minerRange) |
| Display (per player) | Miner's vein marker: outline, ping, both or off |
Notes
- Requires GeckoLib.
- Allays can't be hurt by mobs, players, fire, falls or drowning. If one falls out of the world, it comes back to you or to the last solid ground it was over.
- Multiplayer: other players can pet your allays, but only you can give them items or orders, lead them or lure them. While you're offline your companion waits, and it rejoins you when you log back in.
- Only tamed allays can move into a home or go in a jar.
