Afterlife Civilization

Every creature you kill lives on in a hidden afterlife — and remembers you. Visit it alive: cities of the dead, armies of the slain, pets seeking owners, boss lords and player shades. The bloodier your playthrough, the deadlier it gets.

🕯 Afterlife Civilization

Every creature you kill lives on. And it remembers you.

Everything that dies in your world — villagers, animals, monsters, pets, bosses and players — passes into the Afterlife, a hidden dimension of ashen soul-sand wastes under an eternal night. There the dead go on living: they build a city, raise armies and cling to their old power.

You can enter it alive and see the consequences of everything you've done. The more aggressive your playthrough, the more dangerous the Afterlife becomes.

⚰ The society of the dead

🏚 Fallen villagers build cities

At the heart of the Afterlife stands a necropolis of blackstone and deepslate. It grows with every villager who dies — new houses rise while you're away. Citizen souls walk its streets, keeping their professions and trades… but they overcharge the ones who killed them. Every victim bears the name of its killer, and iron golem souls never forget.

⚔ Slain monsters form armies

Every monster you kill joins the army of the fallen. While you're in the Afterlife, war bands march on you — made of the very species you slaughtered most, led by a glowing Warlord. More blood on your hands means bigger bands, stronger warriors and better armor.

🐾 Pets look for their owners

Your dead pets are waiting and will run to meet you. Offer one an Obol and it comes back to life at your side when you return. A pet killed by its own owner, though, remembers who did it.

👑 Bosses keep their power

In the citadel north of the necropolis, the Lords sit on their throne: the bosses you've slain. Every kill of the same boss makes its Lord stronger. While any Lord lives, the armies fight under its banner with extra power. Overthrow one, and it drops its loot all over again.

👤 Dead players leave influential shades

Every player death leaves a Shade: it has the player's skin and the gear they wore when they fell, and its strength depends on the level they died at. Influential shades walk with a retinue. A neutral shade may share its strength and tell you who killed it. The shades of players you killed will come for you.

🎯 Why go there?

  • Recover what was lost. Items that burned in lava, fell into the void or despawned after your death aren't gone forever: your own shade carries them, and it will hunt you down. Defeat it to get your items back, plus half the experience you lost.
  • Bring back your pets with an Obol.
  • Atone. Offer an Obol to the soul of your victim to lay it to rest. It lowers your aggression and calms the Afterlife.
  • Stop the hauntings. Be cruel enough and the dead come after you in the overworld at night. Only laying souls to rest makes it stop.
  • Gather Soul Essence from the armies and the Lords to craft a Soul Anchor: keep it in your inventory and you keep all your items and XP when you die.

📈 Six moods of the Afterlife

Every kill adds aggression: villager 5, pet 8 (double for your own pet), boss 15, player 10, monster 0.5.

Serene → Uneasy → Restless → Hostile → Bloodthirsty → Apocalyptic

Higher tiers mean more frequent, armored war bands, golems that attack on sight, shades that despise you and the dead visiting you in the world of the living. In multiplayer, every player gets their own danger level.
