Aetheria Ranks

Earn your own Rank XP, climb from F to SSS, and grow strong enough to survive hard modpacks.

Built for hard modpacks. If your pack runs L2 Hostility, Apotheosis bosses, or Iron's Spells, this gives players a power curve that keeps pace with the difficulty curve.

How it works

Kill hostile mobs, elites, mini bosses and bosses to earn Rank XP — a currency completely separate from vanilla XP. Rank XP levels you up. Levels push you through the ranks.

Every rank grants permanent attribute bonuses. Low ranks give you the fundamentals: health, damage, armor. High ranks unlock the rare stuff — crit damage, life steal, armor pierce, spell power, cooldown reduction.

Max level 180
This is not a weekend grind. The XP curve is quadratic: level 2 costs about 250 XP, level 180 costs about 200,000. A normal hostile mob drops 4 XP. Do the math and you'll understand the design.

Anti-farm that actually works

Mob traps are the enemy of long progression. Aetheria Ranks shuts them down on multiple fronts.

Per-chunk XP caps with progressive decay. XP in a farmed chunk drops to 50%, then 25%, then zero, resetting on a configurable timer.
NoAI mobs give nothing. No more AFK grinders.
Kills without recent player damage give nothing. Lava blades, fall damage traps, and crusher farms don't count unless you actually fought.
Spawner mobs give reduced XP. 25% by default. Renamed mobs can be ignored entirely.

First kill bonus

The first time you defeat any given boss, XP is multiplied — 5× for bosses, 2× for mini bosses. Kill it again and it's back to normal.

The result: exploring a new dungeon beats farming the one you already cleared. Exactly the incentive a progression pack wants.

Clean, readable HUD

  • A slim Rank XP bar on your screen edge, colored by your current rank, filling in real time. Fully repositionable — vertical or horizontal, six anchor points, adjustable size, or set to fade in only when you gain XP.
  • Press K for a full rank panel: rank, level, progress, total XP, bosses defeated, active boosts. Read-only — no upgrade buttons, no menu diving.
  • Optional rank prefix on your name.
[S | Lv. 120] PlayerName

Two items

Rank Essence
Instantly grants one Rank Level. Won't be consumed at max level.
Rank XP Elixir
A real potion effect, with icon and timer like any vanilla potion, granting +50% Rank XP for 15 minutes. Drink before a boss fight.

Neither has a crafting recipe by default — they're designed as quest rewards and loot. Add recipes via KubeJS or CraftTweaker, or hand them out through your quest book.

Integrations

Any attribute registered in the game works. The config takes free-form attribute IDs, so vanilla, Apothic Attributes, Iron's Spells, or any modded attribute can be attached to a rank.

  • Apothic Attributes / Apotheosis — crit chance, crit damage, life steal, armor pierce and overheal are wired into high ranks by default. Apotheosis affix mobs and bosses are detected and grant multiplied XP.
  • Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks — spell power and cooldown reduction on the top rank by default.
  • L2 Hostility — designed to sit alongside it. Your power curve, its difficulty curve.
None of these are required. Missing mods just mean missing attributes are skipped with a log warning. The mod never crashes over a config entry it can't find.

Commands

All commands require permission level 2, so they work in command blocks, FTB Quests rewards, and datapacks.

/aetheriaranks xp add|set|remove <player> <amount>
/aetheriaranks level add|set <player> <value>
/aetheriaranks rank set|get <player> [rank]
/aetheriaranks info <player>
/aetheriaranks reload

Quest reward example: /aetheriaranks xp add @p 500
reload re-reads the config and reapplies attributes to everyone online — no restart needed while balancing.

Configuration

Everything lives in config/aetheria_ranks/config.json, generated on first launch. Every number on this page is a default you can change:

XP formula and max level Level thresholds per rank
XP per mob category Which entity IDs belong to which category
Per-rank attribute lists Anti-farm limits and reset window
Anti-exploit rules First kill multipliers
Item behavior HUD position, orientation, size, visibility
Name prefix format and rank colors Which messages appear
Modpack authors: this mod ships with sensible defaults but is meant to be tuned. The default mob categories only list vanilla bosses — add your pack's bosses to mob_categories to make first-kill bonuses meaningful.

FAQ

Does this replace vanilla XP?
No. Vanilla XP still works exactly as it does — enchanting, anvils, everything. Rank XP is a completely separate pool.
Is there a skill tree?
No, by design. Rank gives you a general power base; specialization comes from your gear, affixes, gems, and spells. You're not locked into a class.
Can I use this in my modpack?
Yes, please do.
Do I need Apotheosis or Iron's Spells?
No. They're optional. Without them, the attributes referencing those mods are skipped and you'll see a harmless warning in the log.
Why is progression so slow?
Because it's built for 180 levels across a full modpack playthrough, not a weekend. If it's too slow for your pack, lower the quadratic coefficient or raise the XP rewards — both are config values.
Can I change the keybind?
Yes — Options, then Controls, then Aetheria Ranks.
