What's new

What's new since the previous development update

This update begins connecting the stronger historical evidence chain introduced previously into a more complete:

causal benchmark and longitudinal learning path

The previous preview strengthened AO's ability to prove:

what was executed
↓
when it was executed
↓
what was measured

This update starts using those facts to answer another important question:

did this exact optimization actually produce a meaningful benefit over time?

Causal results can now retain absolute measured effects

AO can now preserve an authoritative causal delta for completed experiments.

Instead of retaining only a general improvement/regression result, the causal evidence can include:

  • expected/counterfactual runtime cost;
  • observed treatment cost;
  • exact causal delta;
  • effect fraction;
  • metric provenance;
  • PRE / EXPERIMENT / RECOVERY boundaries;
  • causal model identity.

Both normal baseline comparison and bracketed-control evaluation can produce these bounded causal facts when the required evidence is available.

The causal-learning format has also been extended so these exact deltas can remain attached to the experiment that produced them.

Historical measurements can now enter a real benchmark path

The historical runtime sidecars introduced previously can now be used to select and aggregate real measurements from completed experiment windows.

AO can preserve the exact relationship between:

historical sample
↓
selected runtime metric
↓
measurement window
↓
causal experiment
↓
runtime side / metric domain

This path does not invent missing samples or reconstruct old measurements from the current runtime.

If the historical evidence is incomplete, the benchmark remains incomplete.

AO can now calculate a bounded net optimization result

A new parallel comparison path can combine several previously separate costs:

  • observed workload difference;
  • causal optimization effect;
  • AO's own observer overhead;
  • optimization execution overhead.

This allows AO to move toward evaluating the real net value of an optimization rather than simply asking whether one metric moved in the expected direction.

The comparison is currently deliberately narrow and requires compatible authoritative measurement domains.

Unsupported or mismatched evidence fails closed.

Benchmark evidence can now be stored durably

Completed causal comparisons can now be converted into immutable benchmark evidence and stored separately.

The durable evidence preserves identities for:

  • candidate;
  • strategy;
  • runtime context;
  • runtime side;
  • workload/activity;
  • metric domain;
  • experiment;
  • causal record;
  • measurement windows;
  • comparison result.

This prevents evidence from unrelated strategies, contexts or workloads from being mixed into the same learning history.

Individual results can now be classified by significance

AO now has a bounded significance layer that can classify a completed causal benchmark as:

  • MEANINGFUL_IMPROVEMENT
  • NEGLIGIBLE_GAIN
  • REGRESSION
  • INSUFFICIENT_EVIDENCE

The classifier also requires explicit confidence information such as:

  • uncertainty;
  • repetition count;
  • attribution completeness;
  • hysteresis boundaries.

A small apparent improvement is therefore not automatically treated as meaningful.

Likewise, weak or ambiguous evidence is not automatically interpreted as a regression.

AO can now reason across multiple completed experiments

One successful experiment is not necessarily enough to prove that an optimization is consistently useful.

The modern benchmark path can now maintain bounded longitudinal evidence for the same:

candidate
+
strategy
+
runtime context
+
runtime side
+
activity
+
metric domain

Repeated windows can be classified into states such as:

  • stable meaningful improvement;
  • stable negligible effect;
  • stable regression;
  • unstable behavior;
  • insufficient evidence.

This begins allowing AO to distinguish:

"this worked once"

from:

"this keeps working under the same relevant conditions."

Longitudinal evidence can now produce regression signals

When repeated evidence indicates a stable attributable regression, AO can now derive a read-only runtime regression signal.

The same path can distinguish between:

healthy
↓
watch / continue observing
↓
insufficient evidence
↓
attributable regression

A regression signal alone still does not grant authority to modify lifecycle, trust, quarantine, rollback or execution state.

Regression evidence can approach the existing corrective system

The modern benchmark path can now reach a bounded governance preflight.

When the evidence is strong enough, AO can mark a strategy as:

ready for bounded corrective review

This is an important distinction.

It does not mean:

regression detected → automatically repair everything

The existing safety authorities must still independently provide and validate facts such as:

  • correctness;
  • safety;
  • rollback health;
  • recovery health.

The modern benchmark path therefore provides evidence to the corrective system without bypassing the authorities already responsible for safe corrective behavior.

The system still does not manufacture authority

This update adds considerably more information to the modern path, but information and authority remain separate.

The new benchmark, significance, longitudinal and regression layers remain conservative.

They do not independently perform:

  • lifecycle promotion;
  • trust changes;
  • quarantine;
  • rollback;
  • corrective synthesis;
  • physical execution.

Those actions still require the appropriate existing authority.

MODERN_EXPERIMENTAL remains only partially connected

LEGACY

remains the default runtime mode.

MODERN_EXPERIMENTAL

continues exposing progressively more of the modern architecture during real gameplay, but the legacy optimizer still performs much of AO's current practical optimization.

The new window-causal benchmark pipeline is currently a parallel foundation and is not yet fully wired into normal productive runtime flow.

What this update represents

The modern path is increasingly becoming:

observe
↓
generate candidate
↓
physically execute
↓
capture exact historical measurements
↓
produce authoritative causal delta
↓
calculate net optimization value
↓
classify significance
↓
retain durable longitudinal evidence
↓
detect stable improvement or regression
↓
route trustworthy evidence toward existing governance

The major change is that AO is beginning to move beyond proving:

"this experiment happened"

toward proving:

"this exact optimization repeatedly produced this measurable result under this specific runtime context."

What remains

The next major work is to connect this causal benchmark path more naturally into real runtime operation.

That includes continuing toward:

real generated experiment
↓
automatic authoritative benchmark evidence
↓
repeated longitudinal learning
↓
validated lifecycle consequence
↓
safe autonomous reuse or correction

while continuing to preserve:

  • provenance;
  • causal attribution;
  • context separation;
  • experiment-cost accounting;
  • AO self-overhead accounting;
  • uncertainty;
  • rollback safety;
  • restart safety;
  • existing lifecycle and trust authorities.

The modern system is getting closer to a point where generated optimizations can be evaluated not only by what happened during one experiment, but by whether their measured benefit remains reliable over time.
