Elkonia: Waxed Hoppers
You already wax copper with honeycomb. Now wax a hopper. A waxed hopper moves a whole stack at a time instead of one item, so a hopper line that used to trickle moves up to 64 times as much. Hopper minecarts can be waxed too.
Features
- Whole stacks. A waxed hopper pushes one full stack and pulls one full stack every 8 game ticks. That is the same rhythm as a normal hopper, but each move is a stack instead of one item, so throughput is up to 64 times higher.
- Works with the containers you use. Chests, trapped chests and copper chests (double chests too), barrels, shulker boxes, droppers, dispensers, hoppers, furnaces, blast furnaces and smokers.
- Furnaces the vanilla way. From above into the input slot, from the side into the fuel slot (common fuels only), and the output is pulled out from below.
- Waxed hopper minecarts. A waxed cart pulls a whole stack from the container above it every 8 ticks, about 8 times a vanilla cart.
- Feels like vanilla. Wax with honeycomb, scrape it off with an axe, or craft it. A powered hopper or a powered activator rail stops it, just like a normal one.
- Three new advancements in the Husbandry tab, next to vanilla's Wax On.
- Tunable. Change the rhythm with one scoreboard command.
How to use it
Hoppers
- Wax: right-click a hopper while holding honeycomb. One honeycomb is used up, you see the wax particles, and the hopper is renamed Waxed Hopper in honey brown. The hopper's screen opens as well, because right-clicking a hopper always opens it.
- Don't sneak. A sneaking right-click on a hopper triggers nothing at all in the game, so the pack never sees it. Click it standing up.
- Craft: a hopper and a honeycomb anywhere in the crafting grid make a Waxed Hopper.
- Break it: it drops as a Waxed Hopper and is still waxed when you place it again.
- Unwax: right-click it with any axe.
Hopper minecarts
- Wax: right-click one with honeycomb. Sneaking is fine here. It becomes a honey-brown Waxed Hopper Minecart.
- Craft: a hopper minecart and a honeycomb make a Waxed Hopper Minecart.
- Unwax: right-click it with an axe.
- Break it: it drops as a Waxed Hopper Minecart and is still waxed when placed again.
- Moving carts: you can't wax a cart while it, or a cart within 3 blocks of it, is moving. The cart you see is slightly behind where the game has it, so the wrong cart could get the wax. Stop the train first, or use the recipe.
Where stacks go
Stacks move into and out of:
- chests, trapped chests and copper chests (double chests too)
- barrels and shulker boxes (a shulker box will not take another shulker box)
- droppers, dispensers and hoppers
- furnaces, blast furnaces and smokers:
- from above, into the input slot
- from the side, into the fuel slot (common fuels only)
- the output is pulled out from below
- out of a hopper minecart or chest minecart sitting on top of the hopper (when there is no container block there)
Everything else, such as brewing stands, composters, crafters and items on the ground, still works exactly as vanilla does. A hopper already picks up a whole dropped stack at once. A hopper filling a minecart below it, chest boats, and a waxed cart under another cart still move one item at a time.
Item sorters and comparator clocks rely on hoppers moving one item at a time, so leave those hoppers unwaxed.
Changing the speed
/scoreboard players set #interval waxed_hoppers 1 (every tick: as fast as it goes)
/scoreboard players set #interval waxed_hoppers 8 (default)
Advancements
Three new advancements appear in the Husbandry tab, next to vanilla's Wax On:
- Wax On, Stack Off: wax a hopper with honeycomb.
- Scraped Clean: scrape the wax off with an axe.
- Pre-Waxed: craft a Waxed Hopper.
Good to know
- Honey drip: a waxed hopper or waxed hopper minecart drips a little honey now and then, so you can tell it from a plain one.
- Waxing renames the hopper, and unwaxing removes the name, so a hopper you named yourself loses its name.
- If a server is very busy, waxed hoppers share a per-tick work allowance:
#budget waxed_hoppers, default 1200. When it runs out, hoppers wait a tick rather than risk doubling items. The allowance follows the server's max_command_sequence_length automatically.
- The more waxed hoppers and carts are loaded at once, the smaller each one's share: from about 1,000 (at the default limit) they start slowing down, and from about 2,000 they pause and work at normal vanilla speed until fewer are loaded (breaking or unloading some is enough). Keep waxed hoppers to the ones that need the speed.
Requirements and compatibility
- Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 only. It does not work on other versions.
- A data pack. No mods required.
- Works alongside the Vanilla Tweaks Directional Hoppers resource pack, which shows which way each hopper points.
Installation
- Open your world's
datapacks folder.
- Drop the zip in as it is. Don't unzip it.
- Run
/reload, or reopen the world.
Uninstall
Run /function elkonia:waxed_hoppers/admin/uninstall, then disable the data pack. Uninstall can only reach hoppers in loaded chunks. Any that are elsewhere keep their name, which is harmless: once the pack is gone they are ordinary hoppers.
