What's new
OpenItems 0.4.0-alpha.3
Changes since the first release, 0.1.0.
OpenItems has grown from custom items, shaped recipes and resource-pack generation into a broader custom-content toolkit. It remains independently developed, free and MIT-licensed.
Easier setup and content creation
- Added an in-game setup wizard and
/oi makeitem-creation form with seven presets. - Added the visual Maker with 17 templates, a searchable content library, PNG upload and flat-texture previews, recipe controls and forms for supported content types.
- Added live Save & Build, validation, stale-edit protection, automatic file backups and Undo for the latest 50 Maker transactions.
- Added an offline Maker with local drafts, recovery and portable project ZIP import/export. A separate scoped browser model editor is also available.
- Expanded the original two-item example into a workshop with 13 items, recipes, six original Blockbench model sources, five vehicle presets and sample interfaces.
Expanded items, recipes and world content
- Expanded items with enchantments, attributes, rarity, glint, custom durability, stack sizes, food, potions, equippable assets and right-click actions with permissions, cooldowns and consumption.
- Added recursive multi-file content definitions, an item browser, inspection tools, inventory refresh and granular permissions.
- Expanded recipes beyond shaped crafting to shapeless crafting, smelting, blasting, smoking, campfire cooking, stonecutting, smithing transformations and trims, anvils and Paper brewing.
- Changed custom ingredients to persistent-ID matching and expanded protections against unintended use in crafting and processing inventories.
- Added persistent furniture with owner-aware pickup, seats, storage and optional lighting.
- Added solid full-cube custom blocks with configurable breaking time, tool categories, drops and chunk persistence.
- Added a cube-based Blockbench compiler, hierarchical bones, animation tracks and model binding to living entities.
- Added custom entities using vanilla living bases, voluntary player emotes, consent-based group emotes and movement animation sets.
- Added experimental car, bike, boat, airplane and helicopter controllers with seats, passengers and idle/drive animations.
- Added inventory screens, action-bar HUDs, bitmap chat icons, sound definitions and native Paper dialogs.
- Added bounded custom water/lava pools with effects, restoration records and flow controls.
Experimental Geyser and Bedrock support
- Added public-API Geyser/Floodgate player detection, Bedrock text fallbacks for Java bitmap icons and suppression of Java pack offers for detected Bedrock players.
- Added Bedrock item-pack export, Geyser mappings, original-art overrides and compatibility reports.
- Added an experimental same-server world renderer for supported cube and flat models, including server-driven animated parts. Its temporary carrier entities are hidden from Java players.
- Added
/oi bedrock installto install local Geyser assets and mappings with backups, plus/oi bedrock statusfor diagnostics. A full Paper restart is required after installation or asset changes.
Pack delivery and integrations
- Moved pack asset reading and compression to a worker, with staged publication, immutable versioned packs, hashes and build reports.
- Added optional built-in HTTP hosting alongside external HTTPS delivery, ZIP pack merging and stronger asset/archive validation.
- Added conservative content-import staging with unsupported-feature reports, optional PlaceholderAPI and WorldGuard integration, public APIs and cancellable events.
- Added 51 wiki topic pages covering setup, features, configuration, commands, permissions, testing and troubleshooting.
Fixes and validation
- Fixed model bindings being erased during entity unload, which could leave empty anchors and missing model parts after chunk reloads or server restarts.
- Added entity-section restoration while preventing duplicate model parts and preserving explicit unbind behavior.
- Excluded obsolete legacy materials from creation catalogs and tab completion.
- Expanded the automated suite from 4 tests to 91 passing tests.
- Added native Paper checks with headless Java and Bedrock protocol clients, including pack delivery, Maker transactions, animation packets, carrier visibility/cleanup and chunk/restart persistence. Added desktop/mobile browser checks for the Maker.
Upgrade notes and current limits
- This is an alpha release. This build targets Paper 26.2 and Java 25. Test on a separate server and back up your world, configuration and content before upgrading.
- Models whose saved binding was already erased by an older build must be rebound or recreated; the missing model ID cannot be recovered automatically.
- Bedrock world rendering currently requires Geyser-Spigot on the same Paper server. Proxy/standalone world rendering, held/worn 3D equipment conversion and custom font/audio conversion are unfinished.
- Graphical Minecraft-client rendering, complete gameplay controls and production-load stability still need validation. Advanced block/model features and complete automatic migrations remain incomplete.
