LOST NameTags

Line Of Sight Toggleable NameTags, LOS based individual nametag visibility.
LOSTNameTags 1.0.0
  • Supported Game Version: Minecraft 1.12.2
  • Required Dependency: ProtocolLib 4.3.0
  • Target Server Platform: Built for Paper 1.12.2 (should run completely fine on standard Spigot too)
LOSTNameTags adds dynamic, line-of-sight toggleable nametags to your server. Basically, if you can physically see a player, you see their nameplate. If they step behind a solid wall, or fall in a pit, their nametag completely vanishes for the viewer. It is a lightweight solution built specifically for tactical, survival, or immersion-focused multiplayer servers where players shouldn't be tracking heads through solid blocks.

How it works

  • Per-Viewer Visibility Tracking: The plugin continuously monitors block occlusion paths between players independently, sending visibility state update packets only to the exact clients who need them.
  • No Scoreboard Corruption: It does not touch, modify, or interfere with your server's actual Bukkit scoreboard setup. It will not mess up your pre-existing tablist layouts, prefix managers, or prefix plugins.
  • Configurable PerTick LOS Updates: Defaulting to every 5 ticks (0.25 seconds)
  • Packet Interception Logic: Minecraft 1.12.2 has zero team-free methods to control player nametag visibility natively on the server side. To bypass this framework limitation, LOSTNameTags cleanly intercepts and injects private, client-side scoreboard-team packets directly to individual viewers via ProtocolLib.
Note: I only plan on releasing version 1.0.0 of this plugin. I do not plan on updating, adding features, or iterating past this point; this was only built because I searched everywhere and couldn't find a functioning line-of-sight utility for 1.12.2 servers. This was slapped together on a Wednesday, so if it turns out to be buggy or poorly optimized under heavy load, I might swing back around to fix it, but try not to count on ongoing support.

 Credits & Licensing Specs
  • ProtocolLib: This plugin relies entirely on the API provided by ProtocolLib (v4.3.0) to safely perform underlying client-side packet manipulation.

  • Plugin License: This project is licensed and protected under the GNU GPL v3. You are free to do what you want with the code, but if you modify it or fork it into your own custom server setup, your derivative project must also be open-source under the GPL v3.
