gpsTowny

gpsTowny is a Towny town location plotter that shows the closest towns along with the compass heading to get there. The towns are listed from closest to furthest. Optionally, your compass may be set to a specific town. Town size, number of residents and the type of town are also listed for each town.

Compass Orientation

Your compass is calibrated to line up with the standard, Minecraft coordinate system when listing towns. These are the same compass directions shown when pressing [F3]. This is also optionally turned off in the config file to prevent compass calibrating when listing towns. The default is switched on. This setting is ignored if GPS is asked to set the compass to a town.

Navigation

If you decide not to set your compass to a town you can navigate to it instead. With your calibrated compass and a distance and heading combination from the list, you have what you need to get to the town. Any time you need an update on your position simply invoke /gps. This is an alternative way to get to the desired town using a compass the way it is normally used outside of Minecraft. The benefit of navigating to a destination is that you remain aware of where you are in relation to all the listed towns instead of just one. You may also remain aware of where you are in relation to distance and heading combinations provided by other plugins ie: GPS, Pplot and Postal.

Towny

Towny is a depend, and not optional. GPS will look for Towny and hook it if found, but abort if not.

Installation

Just drop into your plugin directory and go.

Command

/gps [warp] (alias: /gpst)

Invoked without parameters this command delivers the geographically aware list of towns. Used with a town name sets your compass to the town. If you have a conflict with the command ‘/gps’, use ‘/gpst’. /gpst is a little more than an alias, it is an alternate command name.

Confirmation

GPS will complete complicated town names with just a few characters, if possible. You are given a chance to confirm the completed name with a single ‘/’. The town names GPS considers when completing a warp name are narrowed down to the ones listed when listing the nearby towns. The length of this list is set in the config file and may be as long or short as desired. This dramatically reduces the amount of characters needed to identify the desired town.

Permissions

Permissions are turned off by default to make it easy to get started. Turn on in 'config.yml' as well as set a custom permission node. Standard nodes are ‘gpsTowny.admin' and 'gpsTowny.gps’ or op.

Settings

Other settings in 'config.yml' are the number of towns to list, and, whether to line your compass up with Minecraft coordinates when listing towns. GPS automatically determines the availability of Towny, and won't start if it can't find it. Vault is a soft depend, and will be used, if found, to determine the desired permission system.

To change your settings go to the /va_gpsTowny directory, off of the /plugins directory you dropped this plugin into and find the file name 'config.yml'. Use a text editor like Notepad (plus plus) to change settings as desired. Avoid changing the structure of the file, and avoid using tabs. Getting a new config.yml file is very easy if it gets messed up. Just delete it and let gpsTowny create a new one.

History

gpsTowny is from a larger plugin, Postal. Postal has a /gps command that provides a similar location list, but lists Postal addresses instead of Towny towns. This plugin contains proven code from Postal, but adapted to Towny.
