The Nature of Fungus

A fungus is a quiet invader. In the wild it spreads through spores, microscopic particles that float through the air and settle where the conditions are right. They grow best in damp places with limited light. A single spore can take root, creating a network of thin threads called hyphae. These threads spread and connect, forming what scientists call mycelium. This is the true body of the fungus, hidden beneath soil, wood, or flesh. What we often see above the surface, like a mushroom cap, is only the fruiting body, created to release more spores into the air.When fungus interacts with humans the body becomes an unwilling host. Spores that are inhaled or introduced through wounds can germinate inside the lungs, bloodstream, or tissues. From there the fungus spreads, draining nutrients and slowly consuming the host. Some fungi release toxins, altering behavior or weakening the immune system, which allows the infection to grow faster. Inside the body, the mycelium threads are relentless. They pierce cells, travel through blood vessels, and break down tissue. The victim often experiences fever, confusion, coughing, and eventually loss of motor control as the fungus overwhelms vital systems. By the time external growths are visible, it is already too late.This simple truth of fungal biology became the foundation for one of the greatest catastrophes humanity has ever faced.

 

Hollow Ground – The History of Collapse

The Classified Superweapon – May 16, 1976

The Elorian government created the CZ Program, a biological weapon initiative housed inside BioTech Laboratory Institute in the mountains. Government funded, hidden from the public, and in violation of international laws, it aimed to engineer a bio weapon that could rival Khuvrian supremacy.

 

Patient Zero – July 28, 1976

One scientist involved in the program went missing after being seen vomiting outside the facility. A week later five scientists fell ill. The program was halted temporarily while the sickness spread quietly within.

 

BioTech Chaos – August 5, 1976

Twenty-four personnel collapsed at once. They were rushed to local hospitals, overwhelming staff. The illness was new, unseen before by the medical community. Soon it was revealed to be highly contagious. The hospital was locked down.

 

The First Outbreak – August 6, 1976

Cases surged. Authorities covered up the event, confident they could control it. They were wrong.

 

The Explosion – August 10, 1976

Riots broke out. Thousands fell ill. Those with severe symptoms were buried alive in mass graves and set on fire. Field hospitals appeared, but the spread accelerated. Many citizens, unaware of the threat, carried the virus abroad.

 

Nationwide Panic – August 14, 1976

The virus mutated. Patients became aggressive and hostile, attacking others on sight. Infected multiplied overnight, cities collapsed, and the government was forced to acknowledge the outbreaks publicly on August 16. Borders were closed and transport suspended.

 

Worldwide Publicity – August 17, 1976

Scientists in Khuvria confirmed the virus was man-made. Nations condemned Eloria for unleashing a weapon and failing to contain it. Operation Red Salvation was launched by the Elorian army, enforcing shoot-on-sight orders against suspected hosts. Civilians were told to remain indoors and await rescue.

 

The Fall of Lidderdale – August 19, 1976

The capital city collapsed under endless swarms. Operation Twilight, a desperate military push, failed catastrophically. The army was destroyed, hope lost, and the government fled into hiding. Survivors built barricades and waited, unaware rescue would never come.

 

The World Falls Apart – August 28, 1976

The virus spread across borders. Khuvria and wealthy nations tried to develop a cure while millions were infected worldwide. Refugee camps overflowed. Cities burned.

 

The Aftermath – September 20, 1976

Eloria fell silent. Communication ceased. Fires consumed towns, skies blackened with smoke. Corpses filled the streets. Gunshots and screams echoed faintly in the distance. The nation was gone.During the 1970's, tensions between the two superpower nations have risen. The Elorian Federation and Republic of Khuvria were on a geopolitical contest to project supremacy on the world. 

 

The Republic of Khuvria have been constantly innovating their weapons through the funds exploited on their puppet nations, making them wealthy enough to research advancements on weapons. 

 

The Elorian Federation, who are known for their competitiveness, will not let the Republic of Khuvrian be hailed as the technological superior nation in the world. To keep up with them, It's government decided to study and research a classified biological weapon program that is intended to be used in case of war. 

 

"Classified Superweapon" ( May 16, 1976 ) 

 

The biological weapon program that is known as "CZ Program" were conducted on BioTech Laboratory Institute situated on a mountain. It may also take some years before they will be successful in creating a bio weapon. The program was government funded and any information about this aren't disclosed to the public as creating a biological weapon is inhumane and strictly prohibited on international laws. 

 

"Patient Zero" ( July 28, 1976) 

 

A scientist were reported missing by his team who have also participated in the CZ Program. The said scientist was last seen outside of the facility, vomiting. No one knows of his whereabouts. A week after, 5 scientists of the facility became ill, the management of the facility decided to temporarily halt the program due to these reasons and to also investigate the problem. 

 

"BioTech Chaos" ( August 5, 1976 ) 

 

A report from the facility told the local authorities that they need medical backup. 24 personnels suddenly became ill inside the facility and medical services inside were limited. The patients were then sent to the local hospital in the area to observe and to evaluate their illness so that, they can be treated. The local doctors are unaware and didn't have any idea of what illness suddenly struck these scientists, so they sent some specialists to investigate those cases. 

 

Later on, it was revealed that it was because of an unknown contagious virus that the medical community have never seen nor have studied. 

 

An Emergency lockdown of the hospital has been immediately executed. 

"The First Outbreak" ( August 6, 1976 ) 

 

An outbreak has been declared due to the high record spikes of patients surging the hospitals with the same illness. The media and the government have covered up the happenings and not even a single word has been told to people as they were confident that the situation is under control and it is not harmful to anyone. 

 

"The Explosion" ( August 10, 1976 ) 

 

Riots have erupted in the town because of lack of proper medical services and increasing cases of the virus. The patients that has severe symptoms and cannot be treated are sent into mass graves alive and were set to fire along with those who died. Thousands of people have already been confirmed that have contracted the virus. 

 

Several set-up field hospitals were created to help easen the situation on the over capacity of hospitals on several towns. The majority of the citizens of Elorian Federation is unaware of what is happening due to no publicity of the situation. In result, those unaware people who has the virus, carries them to other countries, oblivious of it's catastrophic repercussions on their country of destination. 

 

More and more transmissions of the virus has been reported locally and worldwide. 

The virus has reached The Republic of Khuvrian, scientists and doctors works together to analyze it and also to know its origins. 

"Nationwide Panic" ( August 14, 1976 ) 

 

Genetic mutations have been observed on the virus by the Elorian scientists which leads to pathological aggression and anti-social behavior of the patient. It causes the patient to attack anyone on sight through biting, infecting the victim with the virus.This symptom created numerous infecteds overnight which wreaked havoc among the towns and cities in the country. Chaos ensued throughout the day as mass evacuation happens. 

 

The Elorian Federation has perceived that the scope of the virus is already out of control so they decided to finally address the issue of the multiple outbreaks happening all over the country on the media ( August 16, 1976 ) but they did not admit that the virus was made by the government. 

 

All types of transits has been suspended along with restriction of crossing the border. 

"Worldwide Publicity" ( August 17, 1976 ) 

 

The scientists of the Republic of Khuvrian has traced the origins of the virus on the Elorian Federation. It was also identified that the virus that is reported around the world is genetically-engineered, meaning it was intentionally created and modified by scientists in a laboratory. 

 

The Republic of Khuvrian and the International community condemned Elorian Federation for creating the virus. The Khuvrian intel found out that the first case of the outbreak in Elorian have been reported earlier that week already but they didn't address the issue and didn't take them seriously. Elorian Federation was also blamed by foreign nations that has reported the same virus for failing to contain the disease and lack of early precautionary measures. 

 

The National Army of Elorian Federation started "Operation Red Salvation" wherein they sent army forces to several towns and cities with an order of the protocol "shoot on sight" on suspected hosts of the virus due to the worsening situation of the country despite of violation on human rights. 

 

The government announced in the media "Our dear citizens, please stay indoors at all cost and wait for the rescue team, help is underway" 

The Elorian government issues a National Emergency and their national air force began executing air strikes in several towns and cities. 

"The Fall of Lidderdale" ( August 19, 1976 ) 

 

2 days after, Lidderdale - Elorian's capital city, has been swarmed by thousands of infected. from then on, hundred thousands of people became infected overnight. The army wanted to do a last ditch effort to liberate the capital in "Operation Twilight". They sent battalions from the Army division to eradicate the infecteds and save the remaining survivors. An offensive that are meant to be done in order to improve the nation's morale, has turned sideways. 

 

The offensive was rendered a catastrophic failure as the army was overwhelmed by thousands of infected swarming them, losing an incredible amount of hope to save the rest of the nation. With the fall of the capital, the whole country went into anarchy, more and more people died and succumbed in crowded cities full of infected. 

 

The seat of government evacuated together with military officials and personnel in an undisclosed location to flee for safety. 

The surviving civilians in some towns have barricaded every road, and military checkpoints were made to wait patiently for the rescue. 

 

Little did they know, it's a false sense of security... 

 

Panic spreads worldwide as authorities in Elorian Federation has failed to protect it's citizens from the virus. 

The Republic of Khuvria and several wealthy nations have been leading a global cure effort and prioritizes healthcare at all costs. 

"The World Falls Apart" ( August 28, 1976 ) 

 

Not only the Elorian Federation have suffered severely, the Republic of Khuvrian also were currently being swarmed by millions of infected. Along with them, poor nations has already collapsed and millions of people were looking for refuge in the dire situation that humanity has faced. 

 

Large cities have been overwhelmed in a matter of hours and waves of infecteds are making their way into nearby towns. Rural areas have been the ideal location of some safe zones due to low population density, in which probability of getting infected would be much lower but it is only a matter of time before hordes of infecteds swarm the ill-prepared areas. 

 

Multiple refugee camps were set up as thousands of people were fleeing to their neighboring country. Most nations have banned and closed their borders to prevent the virus from spreading further. 

 

"The Aftermath" ( September 20, 1976 ) 

 

Communications all over the country was lost and no news around the world has reached the nation. The National Media of the Elorian Federation has been down for weeks already, not even a single word was heard from the government and no shadows of them can be seen. 

 

Fires have been ravaging the empty towns for weeks already, black smokes has been covering the gloomy skies. The stench of the rotten flesh fills the air, together with the buzzing sound of flies around the decaying bodies lying on the ground. 

 

Fires, smokes, destruction, are just some of the things that you would have in sight. screams and gunshots can be heard occasionally as people fight for their own lives. 

 

I have just seen how the great nation crumbles, right before my eyes...

 

 

Gameplay and World

This world is scarred by the failures of Eloria. In Hollow Ground the infection has taken root in something far worse than the human body. Plague Hearts are the physical embodiment of the virus, swollen fungal growths fused with blood and bone. They pulse with a sickly red light and poison the land around them.

 

Plague Hearts 

When a survivor enters within 100 blocks of a Plague Heart the air becomes thick with red fog. The mist burns the lungs and lowers visibility.All zombies within the fog mutate. They grow stronger, faster, and more aggressive. Their eyes glow faint red and their attacks spread infection quicker.Plague Hearts are found in buildings marked by twisted blood blocks that seep into the streets. These buildings are nests of infection, hostile ground where survival is nearly impossible without planning.Destroying a Plague Heart requires coordination. As the heart is damaged, it releases waves of mutated zombies to defend itself. Survivors must fight together to bring it down.

Army Recruitment

Remnants of the Elorian military can still be found, scattered soldiers who survived the collapse. These soldiers can be hired with ore ingots. They bring firepower and discipline, holding positions and supporting survivors in assaults against Plague Hearts or large hordes. Each soldier comes with unique strengths. Some specialize in rifles, others in explosives, and some provide medical assistance. They are expensive to maintain but often the difference between life and death.

 

Radios

Radios are lifelines of communication. Messages broadcast across the land give survivors warnings, rumors, and fragments of the past. They are not voices, only text scrolling across the screen, as if written by desperate hands. Some warn of new Plague Hearts, others speak of lost convoys or survivors in need. They provide hope, direction, and sometimes lies.

 

Closing Words

Hollow Ground is not a world of safety. It is the remains of a failed nation, poisoned by arrogance and secrecy. The CZ Program birthed the end of civilization, and what remains are survivors struggling to carve meaning from ruins. Plague Hearts beat like the infected heart of the land itself, spreading fog and rage. Soldiers can be bought but trust is scarce. Radios whisper words in the dark but truth is always uncertain.
