I slid the mask down over my face and the world went quiet for half a second — then the HUD of my own heartbeat kicked in, and I knew the suit was live.
I didn't build any of this. I found it, scattered across the ruins of an old server: seventeen cases, each one humming behind cracked glass, each one promising something different. The first one I opened had a crest of a spider stitched into the chest plate. I pulled it on without thinking, and before I'd even laced the boots a strand of webbing shot from my wrist and yanked me clean off a rooftop. I didn't walk for the rest of that day. I swung.
The next case was heavier — plates of forged steel, a chestpiece that locked in with a sound like a vault door, and a core that lit up gold when I willed it to. I pointed my palm at a wall of cobblestone out of curiosity more than anything, and the wall wasn't there anymore. I started being more careful about where I pointed my hands after that.
Some nights I wore the dark one — no lights, no sound, just a cape that didn't move until I did, and a grapple line that put me on rooftops faster than I could question whether I should be up there. Other nights I reached for the gold-and-red suit, the one that turns thunder into a weapon, lightning crawling down the haft of a hammer heavier than it has any right to be. I learned to run in that one. You don't stand still when the sky owes you a favor.
Not every suit made me a hero. I pulled on the green-knuckled one once in a fit of frustration after losing a build to a creeper, and I didn't recognize my own strength until I'd put a crater where a barn used to be. I wore the claws exactly once and understood immediately why that case had been bolted shut separate from the rest.
Seventeen suits. Seventeen different versions of what I could be in this world — fast, strong, silent, armed, airborne, untouchable, or just a little bit terrifying. I don't take all of them with me anywhere anymore. I pick depending on the day, depending on the fight, depending on who I want to be when I open the door.
The cases are still out there, if you know where to look. Mine are just the ones I've already opened.
