Seasons & Extreme Weather

Now with EF0-EF5 tornadoes, real floods that wash away buildings, tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires and hailstorms on top of four seasons and blizzards. Survive it all with shelters, high ground and a live HUD.

Seasons & Extreme Weather

Survive the weather. Master the seasons. Outlast the disasters.

The world is not safe anymore. Deserts burn you, tundras freeze you, blizzards and dust storms swallow the horizon, and winter kills your crops. Now tornadoes rated EF0 to EF5, real floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and wildfires can tear apart what you build. Watch the sky, listen for the warnings, and get to shelter. 🌪️🌊🔥❄️

The live HUD 📟

A status line is always shown above your hotbar:

[ Winter | Blizzard | Temperature: Freezing ]
[ Spring | Tornado EF3 | Temperature: Comfortable ]

It shows the current season, the condition where you stand (Hot, Cold, Wet, Temperate, Blizzard, Sandstorm, Flood Risk, Nether Heat, Heat Wave, Cold Snap, or an active disaster like Tornado, Flood, Tsunami, Hailstorm or Wildfire) and your temperature status. Hide it any time with:

/tag @s add seasons:hud_off

Show it again with /tag @s remove seasons:hud_off.

Disasters 🌪️🌊

Disasters start at random, and the odds depend on the season. Every disaster warns you first. Disasters never hurt Creative players. Terrain (dirt, stone, sand, ores, water) and bedrock are never destroyed, so your world keeps its shape.

Tornadoes 🌪️

Rating Type Wind speed What it destroys
EF0 Rope 65-85 mph Plants, crops, torches
EF1 Funnel 86-110 mph Leaves, glass, signs, lanterns
EF2 Cone 111-135 mph Wooden planks, doors, fences, wool
EF3 Multi-Vortex 136-165 mph Logs, furnaces, terracotta, iron bars
EF4 Wedge 166-200 mph Bricks, cobblestone, concrete, polished stone
EF5 Mega Wedge 200+ mph Almost everything

A tornado destroys every block that is no stronger than its rating. Weak tornadoes are common, and EF5 is very rare. A tornado wanders across the land and drifts toward nearby players. Everything inside the funnel is dragged around, thrown up into the air and hurt, and the stronger the tornado, the harder the hits.

Shelter:

  • EF0 to EF2: being under a roof keeps you safe.
  • EF3 and EF4: a roof is not enough. You need to be underground.
  • EF5: nothing protects you. Run, or stay far away.

The higher the rating, the wider and taller the funnel. EF3 and above are multi-vortex, with smaller vortices spinning inside the main one. The tornado speeds up with its rating, but even an EF5 is a bit slower than a sprinting player, so run perpendicular to its path.

Floods 🌊

When it rains, rivers and lakes can overflow. There are four sizes:

Size Water rises Washes away
Minor 2 blocks Crops and plants
Moderate 3 blocks + leaves, glass, signs
Major 4 blocks + wooden buildings
Catastrophic 6 blocks + log cabins and heavy wood

The water spreads out from the river and rises block by block, deepest next to the river and thinner farther away. It only fills low ground, flows around walls and into any building it can break. Climb to a hill or a high roof, and stay away from the river. When the flood ends, the water drains away on its own.

Light rain in wet biomes (rivers and swamps) still turns nearby dirt into mud for a while.

Tsunamis 🌊

Near a big ocean, a tsunami can roll in. It is usually started by an earthquake, but it can also happen on its own.

Size Wave height Travels inland Destroys
Small 4 blocks 60 blocks Wood and weaker
Large 7 blocks 100 blocks + logs
Huge 11 blocks 150 blocks + bricks, stone and concrete
Mega 15 blocks 220 blocks Almost everything

You get about 40 seconds of warning, with a countdown in chat and a message telling you the safe height, for example Get above Y=70 or 100+ blocks inland. The wave is a moving wall of water that gets lower the farther it travels. Anything in the wave is pushed inland and hurt, and drowning is a real danger. When the wave has passed, the land is dry again, but whatever it destroyed stays destroyed.

Earthquakes 🌍

The screen shakes and weak blocks crack and fall apart around you. There are four sizes: Minor, Moderate, Strong and Major. Moderate and bigger quakes slow you down while the ground shakes. Strong and Major quakes cause aftershocks, and when you are near the sea, they can start a tsunami. Stay away from tall buildings and cliffs.

Hailstorms ☄️

During thunderstorms, hail can fall. If you are outside, it hurts, and larger hailstorms break glass. Any helmet reduces the damage, and a roof stops it completely.

Wildfires 🔥

On hot, dry days, a fire can start in a forest or grassland. It spreads with the wind through leaves, wood, grass and wool. Rain puts it out. Stay upwind and keep water close.

Thunderstorm lightning ⚡

In thunderstorms, lightning strikes near players much more often than normal. Stay under a roof and away from trees.

Heat waves and cold snaps 🌡️

For several minutes, temperatures get much worse: a heat wave makes everything hotter (most common in summer), and a cold snap makes everything colder (most common in winter). Plan your gear, water and campfires.

Temperature system 🌡️

Your body temperature runs from -100 to 100 and slowly moves toward the temperature around you. It changes by up to 5 points every 2 seconds, so you get time to react.

Status What happens
Comfortable Nothing, you're fine
Warm Nothing yet, but you're heating up
Hot Slowness and Hunger
Overheating Stronger Slowness and Hunger, then burning damage
Cool Nothing yet, but you're cooling down
Cold Slowness and a light frost overlay
Freezing Stronger Slowness, a heavy frost overlay, then freezing damage

Damage only starts after about 6 seconds in a critical state, so you always get a warning. Fire Resistance protects you from overheating damage.

What changes your temperature

Factor Effect
Biome Deserts and badlands are scorching at noon, cold biomes are freezing all day
Time of day Deserts get chilly at night, cold biomes get even colder
Season Summer heats everything up, winter cools everything down
Storms and events Blizzards, heat waves and cold snaps push temperatures further
Shelter Under a roof, extremes are reduced. Deep in a cave they almost disappear
Heat sources Lit campfires, furnaces, lava, fire, magma, torches and lanterns warm you up. Closer is warmer
Water Standing near water cools you a little, swimming cools you a lot
Water bottle Drinking one cools you down
Warm food Mushroom stew, rabbit stew, beetroot soup, suspicious stew and baked potatoes warm you up when you're cold
Leather armor Each piece reduces cold by 12%, so a full set cuts it by 48%

Temperature only affects Survival and Adventure players. Creative players are never affected, and your temperature resets when you respawn.

Blizzards and dust storms 🌪️

Storms start at random, and the odds depend on the season. A storm only starts if a player is standing in a matching biome. Each one lasts 2.5 to 5 minutes, followed by a 4-minute break.

  • Blizzards ❄️ (cold biomes, most common in winter): thick white fog, blowing snow, colder temperatures, and faster, more dangerous Strays.
  • Dust storms 🏜️ (deserts, most common in summer): orange-brown haze, blowing sand, and faster, stronger Husks.

Standing under a roof hides the storm particles, but not the fog, so build a shelter and stay inside.

The four seasons 🍂

Each season lasts 8 in-game days, so a full year is 32 days. The season is shown on your HUD, and everyone gets a chat message when it changes.

Season What it does
Spring 🌱 Crops grow faster, more baby animals, tornadoes and floods are most common
Summer ☀️ Everything is hotter, crops grow normally, dust storms, wildfires and heat waves are most common
Autumn 🍁 Cooler weather, crops grow slower, falling leaf particles in forests
Winter ❄️ Freezing cold, outdoor crops stop growing and can wither, fewer wild animals, blizzards and cold snaps are most common

Winter farming and greenhouses 🌾

In winter, unprotected wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroot stop growing, and some will wither into dead bushes. To keep your farm alive, build a greenhouse:

  • A roof above the crops
  • Walls on at least 3 sides
  • A real heat source nearby: a lit campfire, soul campfire, furnace, blast furnace, smoker, fire or lava

Torches and lanterns warm you up, but they are not strong enough to keep crops alive.

Wildlife 🐺

  • Winter hibernation: wild wolves and polar bears in cold biomes fall asleep during winter. Tamed wolves are never affected.
  • Livestock: in winter, fewer cows, sheep, pigs and chickens spawn. In spring, some spawn with a baby.

How to survive 🛡️

Danger What to do
Freezing in a cold biome Wear leather armor, stand near a campfire, eat a hot stew, or get under a roof
Overheating in the desert Travel at night, drink water bottles, stay near water, or go underground
Blizzard or dust storm Build a shelter with a campfire and wait it out
Tornado (EF0-EF2) Get indoors under a roof
Tornado (EF3-EF4) Go underground. A roof will not save you
Tornado (EF5) Run far away, perpendicular to its path
Flood Climb to high ground and stay away from the river
Tsunami Climb above the Y level in the warning, or run far inland
Earthquake Move away from tall buildings and cliffs
Hailstorm Get under a roof, or wear a helmet
Wildfire Move upwind, away from forests, and keep water close
Winter crops dying Build a greenhouse with a roof, walls and a campfire or furnace

Installation

  1. Download the .mcaddon file.
  2. Open it with Minecraft Bedrock. It imports automatically.
  3. Create or edit a world and activate both the Behavior Pack and the Resource Pack.
  4. Load into your world. The HUD should appear on your screen right away.

Requires Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.0 or newer. No experiments are needed.

Updating from an older version: remove the old Seasons & Extreme Weather packs from your world, import the new file, then activate both packs again.

Server owner settings ⚙️

/scriptevent seasons:temp -90 Sets your own temperature (any number from -100 to 100)
/time add 192000 Skips ahead one full season

Tips

  • Build a small underground shelter near your base. It protects you from tornadoes up to EF4.
  • Pay attention to the warnings. They tell you the distance, direction and safe height.
  • Don't build next to a river if you can avoid it.
  • Near the coast, learn the safe Y level for tsunamis before you need it.
  • Wear leather armor before you head into the snow, and always carry a campfire.
  • Travel through deserts at night, and drink water bottles during the day.
  • Build your farm as a greenhouse before winter arrives. Torches alone won't keep crops alive.
  • Use the test commands on a creative world before you play, to see how each disaster looks.

FAQ

Do I need any experimental features?
No. It works with standard Bedrock scripting.

Will disasters destroy my world?
No. Terrain (dirt, stone, sand, ores, water) and bedrock are never destroyed. Only buildings, trees, crops and similar blocks are affected, and you can turn block damage off completely with /scriptevent seasons:setting blockdamage off.

Does the flood or tsunami water stay forever?
No. All flood and tsunami water is tracked and removed again, even if you close the world while it is happening. If anything is ever left behind, run /scriptevent seasons:cleanup.

How often do disasters happen?
They are random and depend on the season. You can make them more or less frequent with /scriptevent seasons:setting frequency.

Do disasters affect Creative mode?
No. Temperature and disaster damage only affect Survival and Adventure players.

Why did my tsunami command not work?
Tsunamis need a big ocean within about 130 blocks, and only one can run at a time. Stand on a beach and try again.

Can I change the numbers?
Yes. Open BP/scripts/config.js for seasons, temperature and storms, and BP/scripts/disaster_config.js for tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and chances.

Can I add my own heat sources or insulated armor?
Yes. In config.js, add the block to HEAT_SOURCES, or add an armor item to LEATHER_ARMOR. Any armor with the lore line §7Insulated also counts as insulated.

Does it work in multiplayer?
Yes. Every player has their own temperature and HUD. Seasons, storms and disasters are shared by the whole world.

Does it work on mobile and console?
It works anywhere Bedrock supports add-ons with scripting. Big disasters (EF5, Mega tsunami) can be demanding on weaker devices, so you can lower the numbers in disaster_config.js.

Does it change the actual leaf colors?
Not the blocks themselves. Minecraft doesn't allow scripts to recolor leaf blocks, so autumn and winter use falling leaf and snow particles instead.

The frost overlay isn't showing, what do I do?
Make sure the Resource Pack is activated, and that your temperature is -50 or lower. You can test it with /scriptevent seasons:temp -90.

Notes

  • Disasters are random, so you can't predict exactly when one will start. That's what makes them scary.
  • Biomes are checked every 2 seconds, so the HUD can take a moment to update when you cross a biome border.
  • Particles and sounds use the game's built-in assets, so nothing extra needs to be downloaded.
