dropped items that are light sources now produce light.

 

so if you throw a torch down a cave... it'll light the way the entire fall and when it hits the ground act as a light there (until it despawns)

 

same rules apply as before. water based light sources (sea lanterns, sea pickles and the like) work everywhere when tossed. "dry" light sources go out when in water.
