Chickens & Stuff

Catch, breed and farm resource-laying chickens. A Bedrock port of Chickens, Roost and More Chickens.

Description

Catch and breed chickens that lay iron, diamonds, netherite, ender pearls, XP and more. Improve their Growth, Gain and Strength. Then house them in Roosts and Henhouses so the drops collect themselves.

Chickens, Roost and More Chickens were popular Java mods on 1.12, but they haven't been updated in about 7 years and they never made it to Bedrock. Chickens & Stuff brings them together into one add-on.

Requires Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.90 or newer. Experimental toggles are not required. However, the mod does disable achievements. This is a Minecraft change that applies to every add-on not from the Marketplace, not something specific to this mod.

Features

  • 51 resource chickens across 6 tiers. They lay everything from bone meal and dyes to diamonds and netherite.
  • Breeding. Cross two chickens to get a new one. Higher tiers are rarer, so you have to work for them.
  • Stats. Growth is the speed items lay, Gain increases how much items drop, and Strength is how strongly stats pass to their offspring.
  • Chicken Analyzer. Check any chicken's tier, stats, and time until next drop.
  • Chicken Ledger. Sneak and use the Analyzer to browse every chicken's drops, lay time and breeding parents in-game.
  • Chicken Catcher. Turns a chicken into an item that keeps its stats, so you can carry it, store it or move it.
  • Henhouse. Feed it hay and it will collect drops from chickens that are within 5 blocks. It comes in all 13 wood types.
  • Roost. Holds up to 16 of the same chicken and collects their drops automatically.
  • Chicken Breeder. Put in two chickens and seeds to get a new chick with no herding.
  • Roost Collector. Pulls drops from nearby Roosts into its own 27-slot storage.
  • Hopper support. Hoppers work with the Henhouse, Roost, Breeder and Collector.
  • Extras. Water Eggs and Lava Eggs place source blocks, and Solid XP gives 25 XP points.

How to use

1. Get your first chickens Craft a Chicken Catcher and interact with a chicken to catch it as an item. It keeps its stats.

image

Tier 1 chickens come from two places:

  • Wild: Bone White chickens at night, Log chickens in oak forests, Flint chickens on stony shores and peaks, Sand chickens in deserts and beaches, Copper chickens underground, Nether Quartz chickens in the Nether wastes, and Soul Sand chickens in soul sand valleys.
  • Convert a vanilla chicken: use a dye (red, yellow, green, blue and the others) on a vanilla chicken to turn it into the matching colored chicken. Use a book to get a Smart Chicken.

2. Check their stats Use the Chicken Analyzer on a chicken to see its tier, Growth, Gain and Strength, plus how long until its next drop.

image

3. Breed them Feed seeds to two adult chickens, or put two caught chickens and seeds in a Chicken Breeder. Each pair has a chance to make a new chicken, and lower tiers are more common than higher ones. Breeding two of the same chicken improves their stats.

image

4. Put them to work

  • Henhouse: fill it with hay bales, and chickens within 5 blocks lay straight into it. Each bale leaves a dirt block behind when fully used.

image

  • Roost: put up to 16 of the same chicken inside. Take drops from its four output slots. Gain 5 or higher doubles drops, and Gain 10 triples them. It pauses when the slots are full.

image

  • Roost Collector: place it within 4 blocks of your Roosts (and up to 2 blocks above). It pulls drops into its 27-slot chest.
  • Hoppers can feed and empty all of them.

5. Look things up Sneak and use the Analyzer, without pointing at a chicken, to open the Chicken Ledger. It shows every chicken's drops, lay time, parents and what it breeds into.

image

The clips above are sped up to keep them short. Chickens lay and breed more slowly in a normal world.

Compatibility

Chickens & Stuff detects supported add-ons automatically. There's nothing to set up. Install the add-on alongside this one, and the matching chickens unlock and then can be used like any other.

Crossover chickens

That's 13 extra chickens, and they appear in the Chicken Ledger once unlocked. Each one lays that add-on's own item, such as ingots, dust or wood.

Other add-ons

  • Temporal Bottle: the Roost, Chicken Breeder and Roost Collector run faster when a Temporal Bottle is used on them.

If you remove a crossover add-on from a world, its chickens disappear. Caught-chicken items stay in your inventory but can't be used until the add-on is back.

Good to know

  • Higher tiers take longer to lay. Raise Growth to speed it up. At Growth 10, a chicken lays about 10 times faster.
  • Stats go from 1 to 10. Every chicken starts at 1 in Growth, Gain and Strength. Breeding two of the same chicken is the best way to push them up.
  • Chicks can't be caught. Wait until they're adults before using the Catcher.
  • Caught chickens only stack if they match. Different stats mean different stacks, so you can tell your best chickens apart.
  • Henhouses use hay as fuel. One hay bale powers 100 drops and leaves 1 dirt block behind once it’s used up. A Henhouse stops when it runs out of hay or when the dirt output is full, so empty it from time to time or just use a hopper.
  • Vanilla chickens in a Roost lay eggs and feathers, as usual.
  • Use the Chicken Ledger to see what any chicken breeds into, instead of guessing.
  • Sneak to build against or break these blocks. The Roost, Henhouse, Breeder and Collector have a click area a bit bigger than the block itself. Hold sneak to place blocks against them or break them.

Installation

  1. Download the .mcaddon file.
  2. Open it with Minecraft. It imports both packs (Behavior Pack and Resource Pack) automatically.
  3. Create a new world or edit an existing one, and activate both the behavior pack and the resource pack.

Optional: install any crossover add-ons from the Compatibility section, then activate them in the same world.
