Horse Overhaul

Tame a horse, equip a saddle, give it storage, call it with a whistle, manage it from the /horses menu, level it up by travelling, and keep track of it on the world map thru markers.

This is a revamped version of the original Horse Overhaul by XxKillaIciclexX, which is no longer being updated.

XxKillaIciclexX personally gave me permission on Discord to work on this version using his public GitHub source code.

Main Features

Horse Feeding — You can now configure what items you can feed your horse with, can be default Carrot, Apple, or something else!
Horse leveling — horses level up as you travel with them, gaining more health and stamina over time.
Custom horse HUD — horse health and stamina are now shown separately from the player's stats.
Real horse stamina — sprinting drains horse stamina, which then regenerates over time.
Tiered saddles with storage — upgrade from a basic saddle to Copper, Iron, and Gold saddles with more inventory space.
Horse whistle — call your active horse and have it come back to you with smarter pathing.
Native /horses menu — manage your horses from a cleaner UI that uses the vanilla game style.
Horse ownership — bond horses to players, rename them, lock them, free them, or transfer them to another player.
Active Horse System - By default, each player can own up to 3 horses, with a configurable maximum of 8 set by the server owner in the properties file. You can mark one horse as your Active Horse, which changes its map marker icon and makes it the horse that responds when you use the Whistle item.
Persistent map markers — your horse stays visible on the map using its last known position, even when you are far away.
Multiplayer-safe movement — saddled horses behave properly while being ridden, without the old rubber-banding issues.

Leveling System

Horses now level up as you travel the world with them. Each level gives the horse more health and stamina, making long-term horses more valuable and giving players a reason to keep improving the same mount.

Custom Horse Health and Stamina HUD

Horse Overhaul now uses a dedicated horse HUD instead of showing only the player's vanilla stats while mounted.

Horse stamina drains while sprinting and regenerates over time. Horse health is also tracked separately, making the horse feel like its own real mount instead of just a rideable entity.

This system also opens the door for future horse armor, accessories, food, boosters, and stamina-based effects.

Notification System

Plugin messages are no longer limited to the chat. Important feedback now appears as bottom-right notifications with custom icons and custom sounds.

Redesigned `/horses` Menu

The /horses menu now uses the vanilla UI pack, making it feel cleaner, more polished, and more native to the game.

Smarter Horse Behavior

Horses now wake up automatically when you are nearby, so you no longer need to whistle just to make the mount prompt appear at night.

Horse following has also been improved. When called with the whistle, your horse now avoids walls, obstacles, and terrain more naturally instead of getting stuck as easily.

Persistent Map Markers

Horse markers now remember the horse's last known position. If you move far away and the horse's chunk unloads, the marker will still stay useful on the map.

Everything is crafted at the Farming Bench.

Copper, Iron, and Gold saddles are crafted by upgrading the standard Horse Saddle, so you keep progressing through the same saddle line.

How It Works

Bonding a Horse

Tame a horse normally.
Equip a saddle on the tamed horse.
The horse becomes bonded to you.
You can now manage it from /horses.

Wild horses cannot use saddles until they are tamed.

Managing Your Horses

Use /horses to open the horse management menu.

From there, you can:

view your horses
check horse health and stamina
choose your active horse
rename a horse
lock or unlock access
free a horse

Only your active horse responds to the whistle.

Important: freeing a horse permanently destroys its equipped saddle and anything stored inside it.

Calling Your Horse

Craft a Horse Whistle and use it while holding it. Your active horse will try to come back to you.

The first horse you bond becomes active automatically. You can change your active horse anytime from /horses.

Horse Inventory

You can access horse storage in multiple ways:

use a saddle while holding it to open its storage
interact with an unmounted saddled horse to open the horse inventory
press your normal inventory key while mounted to open the horse inventory

Transferring a Horse

While riding a horse that belongs to you, run:

/horse transfer <username>

The recipient must be online and must have space for another horse.

The transfer keeps the horse's name, saddle, storage, level, health, stamina, and lock state.

Commands

`/horse name <name>`	Names the horse you are currently riding.
`/horse lock <name> on\|off`	Locks or unlocks one of your horses.

This section contains the more technical setup and configuration details.

Installation

Download HorseOverhaul-6.0.2.jar from CurseForge.
Place the jar in your Hytale server mod folder.
Start the server once to generate HorseOverhaul.properties.
Edit the config if needed.
Restart the server after changing config values.

For local testing, the mod folder is commonly:

%APPDATA%\Hytale\UserData\Mods

Configuration

Horse Overhaul creates a HorseOverhaul.properties file beside the mod jar on first startup.

Configurable Values

Horse_Limit controls how many horses each player can bond. Default: 3. Valid range: 1 to 8.
Saddle storage slots can be configured separately for Standard, Copper, Iron, and Gold saddles.
Horse leveling can be configured with max level, health gained per level, stamina gained per level, and distance required per level.
saddled_horse_petting_enabled controls whether saddled horses keep the livestock pet interaction.
trace_logging_enabled enables verbose debug logging and should normally stay disabled.

Warning: lowering saddle storage slots on an existing world can remove items from saddles. Back up your world before changing storage values.

Compatibility Notes

Existing bonded horses are preserved when changing the horse limit.
Lowering Horse_Limit does not delete horses, but it prevents new bonds until the player is below the limit.
The old saddle_storage_slots key is still accepted as a legacy value for the standard saddle.

Looking for a 3D Artist

Right now, every saddle tier still uses the vanilla in-game saddle model when equipped on the horse. I am looking for a 3D modeler to help create distinct models for Copper, Iron, and Gold saddles, plus future horse gear.
