Description
ZNNQuest — Full Game Description
ZNNQuest is a survivor-style mini-game addon for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic. Built entirely within WoW's addon framework, it transforms your game client into an arena-based action RPG where you fight endless waves of undead, level up, collect loot, choose powerful spells, and compete with your guild on a live leaderboard — all without leaving World of Warcraft.
Getting Started
Type /znn to launch. First-time players are greeted with a voiced welcome and a gothic-themed tutorial walkthrough explaining controls, classes, and progression. After the tutorial, you'll arrive at the main menu accompanied by its own looping soundtrack. Returning players skip straight to the menu.
The addon completely takes over your audio — WoW's background music, ambience, and sound effects are muted while ZNNQuest is active, replaced by custom zone-specific soundtracks and voice lines that react to gameplay events. All original WoW audio is restored the moment you close the addon or pause with P.
Choose Your Class
Two fully realized classes are available, each with distinct spell pools and three specializations:
Mage — A ranged damage dealer with access to Arcane, Fire, and Frost magic. Mages excel at area-of-effect destruction, crowd control through slows and freezes, and high burst damage from abilities like Pyroblast, Blizzard, and Arcane Barrage.
Priest — A hybrid healer and damage dealer wielding Holy and Shadow powers. Priests can sustain themselves through healing spells while dealing damage with Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast, and Smite, making them ideal for longer survival runs.
At level 10, you choose a Specialization that unlocks a unique passive talent tree with upgrades earned each level. Specs include Arcane, Fire, and Frost for Mage; Holy, Discipline, and Shadow for Priest. Each spec fundamentally changes your playstyle and strategy.
Gameplay
The arena is a top-down battlefield rendered with WoW's 3D model system. Your character — and every enemy — is a real WoW creature model, not a flat sprite. You move with WASD, cast spells with 1–5, open your equipment mid-combat with C, and pause with P.
Enemies spawn in escalating waves. Normal undead mobs are joined by Elite enemies (golden border, tougher, better loot) and Boss enemies (orange border, significant health pools). Every 10 levels, the arena clears for a Raid Boss encounter — a massive creature with unique mechanics, an enrage timer, and a dedicated health bar displayed at the top of the screen. Defeating a raid boss rewards five pieces of loot, a massive XP burst, and an explosion of visual effects accompanied by a triumphant voice line.
Combat is fast and fluid. Projectiles travel across the arena, AoE zones pulse with damage, and floating combat text shows every hit, crit, heal, and gold pickup. Critical strikes flash with special effects. A full VFX system renders spell impacts, death explosions, spark trails, and ring waves in real time.
Progression
Leveling — Killing enemies earns XP. Each level increases your base health and presents a choice of upgrades. Your spec's passive tree deepens as you progress, offering meaningful build decisions every level.
Spells — Before each run, you choose up to 5 spells from your class's pool. Each spell has a cooldown, damage profile, and unique behavior — from targeted projectiles to ground-placed AoE zones to channeled beams. Spells rank up as you level, growing in power.
Equipment — Enemies drop gear across five quality tiers: Common (grey), Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), and Legendary (orange). Items slot into Helm, Shoulder, Chest, Leg, and Weapon slots, each providing stat bonuses like Max HP, Crit Chance, Cooldown Reduction, Movement Speed, Damage, and Pickup Radius. Open your equipment screen mid-run with C to swap gear from your bank without pausing the action.
Gold — Enemies drop gold on death. Gold persists across runs and can be spent in the main menu shop.
Dust — Unwanted items can be salvaged into dust, a crafting currency for future upgrades.
Zones
The game spans three themed zones, each with its own hand-crafted background texture and looping soundtrack:
Tirisfal Glades (Levels 1–10) — The starting zone. Dark forests and plagued soil set the tone as you learn the basics against weaker undead.
Silverpine Forest (Levels 11–20) — Fog-shrouded woodlands with tougher enemies and faster spawn rates. The soundtrack shifts to match the eerie atmosphere.
Hillsbrad Foothills (Levels 21–30) — Open fields and ruined farms where elite enemies become common and raid bosses hit significantly harder.
Zone transitions happen automatically after defeating a raid boss. A floating text announcement and chat message mark your entry into each new zone, and the background and music crossfade seamlessly.
Power-Ups
Rare glowing orbs drop from enemies, granting powerful temporary buffs:
- Static Burst — AoE lightning damage pulses around you
- Speed Boost — Dramatically increases movement speed
- Absorb Shield — Absorbs incoming damage
- XP Boost — Doubles experience gain
Power-up drop rates scale with enemy type: 2% from normal mobs, 8% from elites, 20% from bosses. Active buffs display as icons on your HUD with countdown timers that flash when about to expire.
Prestige System
Reaching level 50 in a run unlocks the Prestige system for that class. Prestige allows you to retain 2 of your spec's passive upgrades across future runs, giving you a head start on subsequent attempts. Reaching level 100 expands this to 5 retained upgrades. Prestige progress is tracked per class and per spec.
Multiplayer (Duo Mode)
ZNNQuest supports two-player co-op via WoW's addon messaging system. One player hosts with /znnquest host and the other joins with /znnquest join PlayerName. The host plays Mage while the partner plays Priest, creating a natural DPS-healer dynamic.
In Duo Mode, both players share an arena with synced enemy spawns, projectiles, and game state. A ready-check countdown starts the run simultaneously. Partner health bars, models, and positions are displayed in real time.
Leaderboard
A guild-wide leaderboard tracks the best runs across three categories:
- Solo Mage — Best solo Mage run by level
- Solo Priest — Best solo Priest run by level
- Duo Mode — Best co-op run by level
Only your personal best per category is recorded — lower runs don't overwrite higher scores. Scores broadcast automatically to your guild on game over. The leaderboard UI (accessible from the main menu or /znn board) shows rank, player name, level reached, kills, spec, time survived, and zone reached.
Click any player's entry to inspect their full build: class, spec, spell loadout, active modifiers, and equipped gear. Gold, silver, and bronze highlighting marks the top three.
Voice Lines & Audio
ZNNQuest features a complete custom audio system:
- Welcome voice line — Plays on first launch during the tutorial
- Main Menu music — Loops while browsing the menu
- Zone soundtracks — Tirisfal, Silverpine, and Hillsbrad each have unique looping OGG tracks
- Boss Kill voice line — "Insanity" plays when you defeat a raid boss
- Killing Spree voice line — Triggers at kill milestones (100, 500, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 7,500, 10,000 and beyond)
- Fatality voice line — Plays on death / game over
All audio plays through WoW's Master channel, bypassing the muted game audio. Music recovers automatically after alt-tabbing.
Modifiers
Optional challenge modifiers can be toggled before a run:
- Hyperspawn — Enemies spawn faster and in larger groups
- Elite Slayer — Higher ratio of elite enemies
- Raid Bosses — Raid bosses appear more frequently
Modifiers are recorded in your leaderboard entry, so other players can see exactly what challenge settings you used.
Streamer Mode
Enable Streamer Mode to let your Twitch chat interact with the game. Viewers can type !spawn 10 to summon enemy waves or !boss to trigger a boss encounter, all processed through WoW's chat system.
