Description

ImprovedExternalDefs

Take full control of how external defensive buffs appear on your screen.

ImprovedExternalDefs is a lightweight World of Warcraft Retail addon that enhances Blizzard's built-in External Defensives tracker with advanced customization, sound alerts, and support for additional defensive abilities.

Designed with PvP in mind, it helps you identify defensive buffs received from teammates, track stolen defensive effects, and recognize important allied abilities without unnecessary visual clutter.

Unlike the default Blizzard tracker, ImprovedExternalDefs can also display additional defensive spells that are not normally included in the native interface.

Features

Expanded Defensive Tracking

Track additional defensive buffs not included in Blizzard's default External Defensives tracker.
Display defensive buffs received from teammates.
Track supported defensive effects obtained through Spellsteal.
Support multiple Spell IDs for abilities modified by talents.
Enable or disable individual defensive abilities.
Add up to 50 custom Spell IDs, with automatically displayed spell icons and localized names.
Track additional allied abilities such as Emerald Communion and Tranquility, even when they do not apply a buff directly to your character.

Important: Emerald Communion and Tranquility are tracked on allied casters. Their icons may appear even when you are out of range or not receiving healing.

Icon Customization

Disable Blizzard's default icon pulsing animation.
Add class-colored glows or choose your own custom color.
Choose between borders, soft glows, or both.
Adjust glow intensity, border thickness, icon spacing, and opacity.
Choose horizontal, vertical, or dynamically centered icon layouts.
Keep icons automatically centered as defensive buffs appear and expire.

Cooldowns & Timers

Enable native cooldown sweeps that work in combat.
Adjust sweep darkness and direction.
Customize timer size, positioning, and offsets.
Automatically scale timer text with icon size.
Remove the seconds suffix.
Display fractional seconds below customizable thresholds from 1 to 10 seconds, at 15 seconds, or using additional available options.

Sound Alerts

Play an audio notification when receiving a tracked defensive buff.
Choose from built-in sounds or sounds provided through LibSharedMedia.
Customize sound notification settings.
Receive alerts only for enabled spells.
Support sound notifications for additional defensive abilities and tracked allied channels.
Support repeated notifications when leaving and re-entering supported defensive areas.

Profiles & Localization

Export and import your configuration using shareable profile codes.
Automatically detect your WoW client's language.
English and French interface support.
Preserve your preferred visual and sound settings.

Blizzard Edit Mode Integration

ImprovedExternalDefs uses Blizzard's native External Defensives tracker as its foundation.

To reposition or resize the icons:

Press Esc → Edit Mode.
Select External Defensives.
Adjust the position and size directly through Blizzard's interface.

Use ImprovedExternalDefs to customize the appearance and behavior of the icons.

Getting Started

Install ImprovedExternalDefs.
Enable Blizzard's External Defensives tracker.
Type /ie to open the addon settings.
Customize your icons, timers, sounds, and tracked spells.
Use /ie test to preview three defensive icons.

Important Notes

Designed for World of Warcraft Retail 12.1.5 (Midnight).
Respects Blizzard's addon API restrictions.
Does not track cooldown availability or predict when teammates will use their abilities.
The addon displays supported defensive auras and allied abilities, not every spell cast by teammates.
Custom Spell IDs require a compatible, detectable aura.
Only defensive cooldowns permitted by Blizzard's native interface and the addon API can be displayed.
