What's new

0.10.0

Your demon, not always the Imp. The "no demon summoned" prompt now brings back the demon you had out last. Emberwell remembers it for each character, whether you summoned it from a tile, an action bar or a macro. The Demons tile in the menu shows that demon's icon, and its tooltip names it. If you no longer know that demon, the prompt falls back to the Imp. Mounts don't count as demons.

0.9.9

Themes. Pick a look from the new dropdown at the top of the settings:

  • Ember, the default orange on ash
  • Fel, green fire on black
  • Blood, deep red on black

The theme changes the sigil itself, with its own plate, bevel and glow, and the settings panel along with it. The switch happens on the spot, even in combat. Spell tiles keep their category colours in every theme. In Blood, an empty shard count turns amber instead of red so it doesn't disappear into the theme.

0.9.8

Settings back on one page. The tabs from 0.9.7 are gone. Every setting is visible at once again, now laid out in two columns of cards, so the panel is roughly square instead of a tall strip. The sigil, combat opacity and tile rows are on the left; shards, Soulstone and summons, and reminders are on the right.

0.9.7

A new settings panel. Settings were split across five tabs (replaced again in 0.9.8). Sliders now show their value on the right and can be clicked anywhere along the track, not just dragged.

Opacity in combat. A new slider under Sigil sets how visible the sigil is during a fight. At 0 it's hidden completely, and nothing on it can be clicked until combat ends, so there are no invisible buttons to misclick. Your Healthstone key binding still works. Moving the slider previews the result on the sigil for a moment.

0.9.6

Soulstones on yourself are announced in a group. In a party or raid, a stone on yourself now goes to chat like any other ("Soulstone on Lily Kins."), so the group knows a res is covered. Solo it stays quiet.

Fixed: Forever's two-part character names could stop Emberwell recognising a Soulstone on yourself. It now checks every spelling of your name the game gives, and also counts it as you when you're the one targeted.

0.9.5

The settings panel is now two columns instead of one tall one, so it's about half the height and fits on smaller screens. The sigil, tile rows and reminders are on the left; shards, Soulstone and summons are on the right.

0.9.4

Fixed the two announcement switches in the settings panel being cut off at the right-hand edge. They now read "Announce Soulstones in chat" and "Announce summons in chat". The note at the bottom of the panel says where the announcements go.

0.9.3

Fixed: summons and Soulstones could go unannounced. On Forever the game announces the start of a Ritual of Summoning without saying who it's for, and doesn't always report the ritual as having gone off. Emberwell now also watches for the ritual's channel starting, and when the game doesn't name the person, it uses whoever you have targeted. The Soulstone line works the same way. Each ritual is still announced once.

/ember ss now also lists casts that failed or were interrupted.

0.9.2

Summon announcements. When you start a Ritual of Summoning, Emberwell posts "Summoning <name> - Please click!" to party chat in a party, or raid chat in a raid. It goes out once the ritual has actually started, so a cast the game refuses (no shard, say) never sends it. With nobody targeted it asks for clickers without a name. Solo, it says nothing. There's a new switch for it in settings, under "Soulstone and summons".

0.9.1

Fixed: Soulstones weren't announced. The announcement depended on the client reporting the cast twice, once when it starts and once when it lands, and on matching the two together. On Forever the first half didn't come through in a form the addon recognised, so the landing was ignored. Now the landing alone is enough. If the client didn't say who the stone was for, Emberwell uses your current target. With nothing targeted, or an enemy targeted, the stone went on you and nothing is announced.

/ember ss now also lists your last few casts as the client reported them. If a Soulstone ever goes unannounced again, that list shows why.

0.9.0

Healthstone on a key. Middle-click the sigil to eat the best Healthstone in your bags, or bind a key to it: Key Bindings, under Emberwell. It works in combat and always picks your best stone, Major before Greater and so on. A macro can use it too: /click EmberwellHealthstoneButton. The sigil tooltip shows which stone it will use.

Soul bag sorting. Shards that land in your ordinary bags are moved into your soul bag once you're out of combat. Emberwell never does this while you're holding something on the cursor. If the soul bag is full it tells you once rather than filling your other bags without a word. There's also a new shard cap setting: go over it and you get a single warning. Switch sorting off in settings or with /ember sort.

Soulstone tracker. When your Soulstone lands, a gem appears beside the sigil showing who has it and how long is left. It's announced to party chat in a party, or raid chat in a raid. That only happens once the cast actually lands, so an interrupted cast is never announced, and stoning yourself is never announced. When the stone gets used, the gem clears and you're told. /ember ss shows the current state.

If the client refuses to let the addon move a shard or post the Soulstone line, that feature switches itself off and says so, instead of erroring on every bag update. It tries again after the next client update.

0.8.4

Fixed: the reminder buttons showed question marks instead of spell icons. A regression from 0.8.3. The reminders still worked when clicked, they just had no picture.

0.8.3

Demon Armor now replaces Demon Skin. Once you've trained Demon Armor, it takes Demon Skin's place on the Self row and in the armor reminder. Fel Armor does the same, on a client that has it. Previously Demon Skin always won, because the spellbook keeps it after the upgrade is learned.

The reminder buttons also update the moment you train an upgrade, rather than one spell behind.

0.8.1 – 0.8.2

Spell rows close instantly. Clicking the sigil to shut the menu, or clicking the open category tile again, now removes the spell row at once instead of letting it fade out after everything else has gone.

0.8.0

The category row fans out of the sigil. Left-click and the tiles spring from the centre of the sigil into place, one after another; click again and they fold back in.

0.7.10

Fixed: soul shards in a Soul Pouch or other soul bag were not counted. Emberwell only ever looked at the backpack and the first four bags, which is the old layout. This client gives you a fifth equipped bag slot, and a soul bag parked there was invisible to the addon along with every shard in it. It now asks the client how many bag slots exist instead of assuming.

Confirmed against a real Soul Pouch in the fifth slot.

A shard stack whose size the client hides from addons no longer aborts the whole count.

New command: /ember shards lists every bag it scanned, how many slots each has, its name, and how many shards it found in each. If the count ever looks wrong, that report says why.

0.7.8

Unending Breath, Sense Demons and the Detect Invisibility spells are now on the Self row. They were simply missing: Emberwell only shows spells it knows to look for, so a utility spell it was never told about just wasn't there. The Detect spells are found by pattern from your spellbook, like Banes.

/ember spells now also lists every spell you know that isn't on a tile, so a gap like that is easy to spot instead of something you have to go hunting for. Damage spells will show up there too; they're meant to live on your action bars.

0.7.7

Better diagnostics for blocked actions: opening a category and switching tile clicks on mid-fight now leave a record, so if the client ever blocks something again the saved report shows what led up to it.

0.7.6

Fixed a blocked-action message after casting from a tile in combat. The spell still cast; what was blocked was Emberwell redrawing the cooldown sweep on the tile mid-fight, which 0.7.3 had accidentally allowed again. Sweeps now update when combat ends.

Each blocked action now saves the last several steps Emberwell took before it, not just the most recent one.

A downrank warning now tells you when the downranked cast came from one of Emberwell's own tiles rather than your action bars, since that would be the addon's bug, not a stale action bar.

0.7.5

Fixed "Interface action failed" when clicking the sigil during combat. A click with even a slight mouse movement counts as a drag, and the client tried to end a drag that had never started, which isn't allowed on the sigil mid-fight. Emberwell now only ends a drag it actually began. If combat starts while you're dragging, the drag ends cleanly just before combat takes hold, so the sigil can't get stuck to your cursor.

0.7.4

Lua errors are now saved to disk. Previously they only ever appeared in chat, so an error was gone the moment the chat scrolled. Each distinct error is now written to SavedVariables at logout with a count of how often it happened, which makes bug reports possible without a screenshot.

0.7.3

Fixed errors during dungeon encounters. On this client, cooldown and cast data can be locked away from addons during an encounter even when you're not technically in combat. Emberwell assumed the two were the same thing, and threw an error every time a cooldown updated mid-encounter. It now checks whether each value is actually readable, and treats anything it can't read as unknown rather than guessing.

The same assumption was waiting in the downrank warnings, which would have errored on every cast during a boss fight, and in the reminders. Both fixed before they fired.

A repeating error now prints once per session instead of on every occurrence, so a future bug can't fill your chat mid-fight.

0.7.2

Fixed "Interface action failed because of an AddOn" when moving, scaling or changing settings for the sigil during combat. The client locks those frames in combat; changes are now held back and applied the moment combat ends.

Emberwell no longer reports other addons' blocked actions in chat. It was announcing every addon's problems as though they were its own, so any problem showed up twice.

0.7.1

Removed the at-merchant "sell your spare shards" prompt and its two settings. Soul Shards can't be sold to a vendor on this client, so the feature was offering to do something impossible.

0.7.0

Banes are their own category. Forever treats Banes as a separate spell family, so they no longer sit among the Curses. Neither category works from a fixed list any more — both are found by pattern against your live spellbook, so a Bane this addon has never heard of still lands on the right row. A category holding nothing at all is no longer shown.

Class mounts (Felsteed, Dreadsteed) added to the Demons row.

Fixes

  • Spells you don't have no longer appear. The spellbook on this client also lists spells you'll learn at a higher level, and slots past the end of your book answer instead of coming back empty. Both were being taken at face value, which is where the question-mark tiles came from.
  • Tooltips, icons and cooldowns now describe the rank you actually cast. They were being drawn from Rank 1 while the button cast your highest rank, so a Rank 2 Demon Skin was quoting Rank 1's armour value. The scan was also keeping the lowest rank of any spell the book lists more than once.
  • Downrank warnings work again. They were comparing against a "highest known rank" of 1, so nothing was ever below it and nothing ever warned. Same root cause as above.
  • Learning a spell during combat no longer loses the rebuild. It was skipped and never rescheduled; it now happens the moment you leave combat.
  • Switching between categories is a hard cut — the outgoing row no longer fades across the incoming one.
  • The shard count is now just what's in your bags, with no invented maximum.

Earlier in this cycle

Rebranded from Necrosis Forever to Emberwell: new name, new hexagonal art, ember-on-ash palette, and a row-based menu in place of the radial one.

Still not possible on this client

No DoT timers and no proc alerts. Blizzard has closed the combat log to addons in this API generation, and there is no honest way to build either without it. /ember retest re-checks in one command and will say so if a later build reopens it.
