Ever feel like the valley is too peaceful?

Random Monster Ambush adds surprise monster attacks while you explore, turning normal travel into tense “watch your back” moments — especially at night.

Features

  • Random ambush checks happen on a timer (configurable).
  • Spawns a small group of monsters around you (configurable max).
  • Optional Elite Boss ambushes (bigger, glowing, tougher).
  • Can be limited to nighttime only, or allowed during the day.
  • Can block ambushes indoors by default (recommended).
  • Monsters spawned by ambushes are cleaned up the next in-game day.

 



 

Configuration (GMCM Options)

Open GMCM in-game to customize everything.

General settings

  • Enable mod
    Turns the entire mod on or off.
  • Check interval (ticks)
    How often the game rolls for an ambush (60 ticks ≈ 1 second).Default: 120 ticks.
  • Ambush chance
    The chance an ambush happens when a check runs (0.00–1.00).Default: 0.10 (10%).
  • Max monsters per ambush
    Maximum number of monsters that can spawn in one ambush.
  • Minimum spawn distance
    How close monsters are allowed to spawn to you (in tiles).
  • Maximum spawn distance
    How far monsters are allowed to spawn from you (in tiles).
  • Allow daytime ambushes
    If OFF, ambushes won’t happen before 6:00 PM.
  • Ambush start time
    The earliest time ambushes can start (e.g. 1800 = 6:00 PM).If daytime ambushes are OFF, this will be forced to 6:00 PM or later.
  • Disallow indoor ambushes (default ON)
    If ON, ambushes only happen outdoors (blocks all indoor maps, including modded interiors).
  • Skip during events & festivals
    If ON, ambushes won’t happen during festivals, events, cutscenes, or minigames.
  • Skip ambushes while holding a fishing rod
    If ON, ambushes won’t happen if you’re currently holding any fishing rod.
 

Monster types

These toggles let you choose exactly what can appear:

  • Green Slime
  • Dust Spirit
  • Bat
  • Rock Crab
  • Ghost
  • Skeleton
  • Squid Kid
  • Shadow Brute
  • Shadow Shaman
  • Serpent

(If you turn one off, it will never spawn in ambushes.)

 

Boss ambushes

  • Enable boss ambushes
    Allows elite boss ambushes to happen sometimes.
  • Boss ambush chance
    Chance that a successful ambush includes a boss monster.Default: 0.10 (10%).
  • Boss health multiplier
    Multiplies the boss monster’s HP (2.0 = double HP).
  • Boss damage multiplier
    Multiplies the boss monster’s damage (2.0 = double damage).

Elite bosses are larger and glow, so you can instantly tell it’s a boss.

 

Notes

  • This mod doesn’t edit game files (SMAPI mod only).
  • Works best with GMCM so you can tweak settings easily.
  • “Disallow indoors” is ON by default to avoid ambushes inside shops/homes.

Q: Do I need a new save?
A: No, you can add or remove this mod anytime.

Q: Do I need Generic Mod Config Menu (GMCM)?
A: No, but GMCM is strongly recommended so you can change settings in-game.

Q: Where do ambushes happen?
A: By default, ambushes only happen outdoors because “Disallow indoor ambushes” is ON.

Q: Can ambushes happen indoors (shops/houses/buildings)?
A: Yes—turn OFF Disallow indoor ambushes in GMCM.

Q: Why don’t ambushes happen in the Mines / Skull Cavern?
A: Those are indoor locations, so they’re blocked when Disallow indoor ambushes is ON.

Q: Can I allow Mines but still block other indoors?
A: Not in the current version, but it’s easy to add an “Allow Mines” exception option.

Q: Can I choose which monsters can spawn?
A: Yes—there’s a “Monster types” section in GMCM where you can toggle each monster on/off.

Q: How do I make ambushes rarer or more common?
A: Change Ambush chance (and/or increase Check interval to roll less often).

Q: What does “Check interval (ticks)” mean?
A: It’s how often the mod rolls for an ambush; 60 ticks ≈ 1 second.

Q: Can I make ambushes only happen at night?
A: Yes—turn OFF Allow daytime ambushes and set Ambush start time to the time you want.

Q: What is an Elite Boss?
A: It’s a tougher ambush monster that is bigger, glowing, and gets HP/damage multipliers.

Q: Can I turn bosses off completely?
A: Yes—turn OFF Enable boss ambushes.

Q: Can ambushes interrupt festivals, events, or cutscenes?
A: No—if Skip during events & festivals is ON, the mod won’t spawn during those.

Q: Does this mod edit game files (XNB)?
A: No, it’s a SMAPI mod only.

Q: Is it safe to remove?
A: Yes—monsters spawned by the mod are cleaned up automatically, and removing the mod won’t break your save.

Q: I’m fishing and keep getting ambushed—can I stop that?
A: Yes—turn ON Skip ambushes while holding a fishing rod.
