🌞v2 Update: Softer & Cozier Volumetric Light

This update focuses on optimizing the Volumetric Lighting (GlobalVolLightScatteringSettings) file.Previously, I enhanced the light penetration to allow more sunlight into rooms, but I noticed that on bright sunny afternoons in rooms with large glass windows, the light felt a bit harsh. So I adjusted the volumetric lighting XML. The core goal remains the same — making the game even cozier. The light rays are now softer and more natural, while still retaining that warm, atmospheric glow.

Additionally, this tweak uses fewer resources than the game’s original settings, which may slightly improve overall performance and smoothness.

One more note: The previous version (v1) has no bugs. Aesthetics are highly subjective, so if you personally prefer the original look, feel free to keep using v1.

💻 Mac-Friendly
If you play on a Mac and can’t use Reshade, this mod works as a simple alternative. It provides soft shadows and natural lighting without any extra tools or shaders. No Reshade required.

If you're like me and have spent countless hours in The Sims 4, you've probably felt this too: EA really loves blue and purple. It seems like everything has an unexplainable blue-purple tint. Sometimes the sunlight or indoor lamps feel overwhelmingly intense, yet the image still looks "flat" because the dynamic range creates noticeable cutoffs and harsh transitions between bright and dim areas.

 

🎨 Design Philosophy: "Natural" and "Soft"

My goal was simple: I didn't want to completely overhaul the original cartoon aesthetic. Instead, I wanted to "refine" it with gentle improvements. I wanted the lighting changes to feel more natural and layered without losing that signature "soft" feeling of the game.

This is a gentle, balanced improvement — not an extreme transformation.

 

✨ Subtle Changes You'll Notice In-Game

  • Natural, Lifelike Skin & Colors
    The original blue-purple tint has been replaced with cool grey-blues and soft warm greys. Skin tones look warmer and more natural indoors and outdoors. Sunlight is more vibrant (no more washed-out grey skin), while indoor lighting stays soft and balanced—rich color without harsh glare or overexposure.
  • Brighter, Softer Window Light
    Sunlight through windows is brighter and spreads deeper into rooms. Overexposed “dead white” patches are gone—light now spills gently across floors and walls for a clean, inviting look.
  • More Spatial Depth
    Light now fades naturally with distance. Areas farther from light sources dim slightly, adding depth and atmosphere—especially at night—without making gameplay too dark.
  • Layered Environmental Lighting
    Lighting is no longer dominated by a single source. Room ambience, lamps, sunlight, and outdoor light work together to create a more organic, dynamic feel that responds to your lot design.
  • Smoother Transitions
    Harsh lighting cutoffs have been reduced. Light shifts more gradually while preserving contrast and dimension.
  • A Calm, Serene Palette
    The overall tone is now neutral and gentle, replacing strong blue-purple hues with clean grey-blues and soft warm greys—easier on the eyes for long play sessions.

💡 A Few Words from the Author

I am well aware that there are many legendary lighting mods out there, such as the works of Luumia, Northern Siberia Winds, and lotharihoe. Those are masterpieces—highly polished and professionally styled, each with strong artistic visions.

By comparison, Cozy Days is "gentler" and more balanced. It doesn't aim for a high-intensity cinematic look or extreme realism. It's simply a different design philosophy: **an alternative for players who, like me, enjoy a quiet, soft, and naturally changing atmosphere without giving up playability or comfort**.

There's no "better" or "worse" — just different approaches for different preferences.

 

⚙️ Compatibility Notes

Because this mod adjusts the game's core lighting logic (tuning), it will conflict with mods like Luumia's No Blu/No Glow, Northern Siberia Winds' Better In-Game Lighting, or lotharihoe's Out Of The Dark. Please ensure you only use ONE lighting mod at a time.

 

🎁 Optional Add-ons: Shadows & Depth of Field

These optional files handle SSAO and DOF. Please note that these will increase the load on your hardware. Players without a dedicated graphics card might experience minor lag. Additionally, for those who use Reshade or Gshade, most popular presets already handle shadows (like MXAO) and depth of field, so these add-ons might be completely unnecessary for you.

  • Grounded Details (SSAO): This fine-tunes the subtle shadows where objects meet. It adds a sense of "weight" to the world—making the connection between chair legs and the floor, or bookshelves and walls, feel more solid and grounded.
  • Lived-in Haze (DOF): I've adjusted the Depth of Field to create a soft blur in the distance. When you focus on a specific subject, the background takes on a gentle, hazy look—like gazing at the world on a lazy afternoon. I feel this adds a lovely "lived-in" atmosphere to the screen.

🌈 Recommended Pairings

This mod works beautifully alongside World Lighting mods. Whether it's the realistic vibes of Sunblind, the ethereal beauty of Milk Thistle, the whimsical Purple Sky, or any other creator's world lighting, pairing them with Cozy Days will make the light pouring through your windows even more enchanting.

🌞 v2 更新:更柔和、更舒適的體積光

本次更新主要針對體積光(GlobalVolLightScatteringSettings)進行了優化調整。 之前為了讓窗光更能進入室內,我加強了光線的穿透感,但發現晴朗的午後,在有著大面玻璃的房間,感覺光線有點刺眼,因此修改了體積光XML。宗旨仍然是讓畫面更加cozy —— 現在的光柱更柔和自然,並帶有溫暖的空氣感。

除此之外,這個調整相較於遊戲原始設定,消耗的資源更少,有機會讓整體畫面流暢度稍稍提升。

額外提醒:第一版並沒有任何 bug,美學風格非常主觀,如果您覺得第一版更符合您的喜好,仍然可以繼續使用喔!

如果你和我一樣,在《模擬市民 4》中度過了無數個小時,或許你也曾有過這樣的感受:EA 真的非常喜歡藍紫色,各式各樣的東西總是有種說不上來的藍紫色調。有時候陽光照進來、燈光灑下來,感覺好強烈,但畫面看起來又有點平,因為光照的動態範圍會造成明顯的截斷感,明亮處和陰暗處之間的過渡很生硬。

 

🎨 設計初衷:追求「自然」及「柔和」

我的想法很簡單:我不想徹底推翻原版的卡通美學,我只是希望「修飾」它,透過溫和的改善讓光影變化變得更「自然」、更有層次,但不失遊戲原本想帶給玩家的「柔和」感。

這是一個溫和、平衡的改善── 不是極端的大改造。

 

你在遊戲中會感受到的細微改變

  • 自然的膚色與更鮮活的色彩
    移除了原本偏藍紫的補光,改為冷灰藍與柔和暖灰。無論室內外,膚色都更溫潤自然。戶外陽光提升飽和度,膚色更健康鮮明;室內光線則維持低飽和、柔和細膩。整體色彩更飽滿有生命力,同時避免過曝與刺眼輪廓光。
  • 更明亮、柔和的窗光
    窗外陽光更亮、延伸更深,不再出現靠窗死白過曝。光線自然灑落在地板與牆面上,明顯卻不刺眼,在強化亮度與擴散的同時加入防過曝控制,兼顧效果與舒適度。
  • 更真實的空間深度
    光線會隨距離自然衰減,離光源較遠的區域略微變暗,營造更好的層次與氛圍,尤其在夜晚更明顯。設定保持溫和,不影響遊戲體驗,但站在燈下與房間另一側確實會有差異。
  • 多層次環境光照
    房間氛圍、燈具、窗外陽光與戶外環境共同作用,不再由單一光源主導。整體光源比例重新平衡,呈現更自然、有層次且隨地段設計變化的光照效果。
  • 更平滑的光線過渡
    大幅減少原版突兀的明暗「截斷感」,光線轉換更漸進,同時保留足夠對比與立體感,畫面更柔和卻不平淡。
  • 靜謐舒適的整體色調
    整體從藍紫色轉為中性冷灰藍與淡暖灰,畫面更乾淨柔和,長時間遊玩也更舒適耐看。

💡 作者的一點點自白

我知道已經有很多傳奇作者製作的光照模組,像是 Luumia、Northern Siberia Winds 或是 lotharihoe 的作品。這些都是經過長時間打磨、風格非常鮮明且專業的傑作,各有強烈的藝術願景。

相比之下,Cozy Days 顯得更「溫和」、更平衡。它沒有那麼強烈的電影感或極致寫實風格。這純粹是另一種設計哲學:為那些和我一樣,喜歡靜謐、喜歡柔和、喜歡光影自然變化,但不想犧牲遊玩便利性或舒適度的玩家,提供另外的選項。

沒有「誰更好」的分別 ── 只是針對不同喜好的不同做法。

 

⚙️ 相容性說明

由於這個模組調整了遊戲底層的光照邏輯,它與 Luumia's No Blu 及 No Glow、Northern Siberia Winds 的 Better In-Game Lighting 或 lotharihoe 的 Out Of The Dark 等模組會產生衝突。如果你目前正使用這些模組,請務必僅擇一使用。
