Craft a Cat Care Guide with a book and String for practical instructions in-game.
Why Players Install
- Never lose a best friend: Tamed cats drop a Cat Collar into their owner's inventory on death; Use it on a block to revive your cat. No more needing to leave your pets at home for safety.
- Bonding that matters: Petting and scratching your cat (sneak + right click with an open hand), feeding them, and sticking together deepen your bond and unlock stronger companionship.
- Unique companions: Cats have individual health and movement traits, a class, a favorite food, and optional gender.
- A home of their own: Link your cat to a Cat Bed and choose how they spend their day.
- Everyday care: Keep your companion well fed, stock a Food Bowl, and discover their favorite meal.
- Class abilities: Naiad, Guardian, Witchling, Dreamer, Lucky - powers scale with affinity.
- Expressive behavior: Cats emote based on weather, time, and their bond with their owner. They react to the world, teleport smartly, show affection, and follow when tempted with food.
- Multiplayer friendly: Optional friendly-fire protection and owner-only breeding.
Getting Started
Vanilla cats automatically become Improved Cats, preserving their appearance, ownership, and supported existing state.
Tame wild cats using Ancient Cod or Ancient Salmon. These are rare drops from their corresponding fish mobs and may appear among randomly selected fisherman trades. Ordinary cod and salmon fishing catches also have a default 5% chance to become their matching Ancient Fish. Fish drops and randomly selected fisherman trades remain available. Vanilla fish taming can also be enabled in configuration.
Once tamed:
- Sneak + interact with an empty hand to pet your cat.
- Sneak + interact with a Training String to inspect and copy their stats.
- Feed them supported raw foods to restore hunger and discover their favorite food.
- Craft a Cat Bed when they deserve a cozy corner of their own.
Five Classes, Five Kinds of Magic
- Naiad: Helps a nearby owner recover with a short regeneration effect when their health is low. Builds affinity in water and under the open sky.
- Guardian: Grants a short resistance effect after its owner takes damage and glows when detecting nearby creepers or phantoms.
- Witchling: Offers witch-themed gifts. Builds affinity around brewing stands and through qualifying owner status effects.
- Dreamer: Stores experience and shares it through Bottles o' Enchanting.
- Lucky: Gives a nearby owner Luck I.
Abilities have their own conditions, ranges, and cooldowns. These cats are companions—not a new melee-combat army.
Companions Beyond the Overworld
Nether Cats
Red-coated cats with orange eyes, found naturally in Crimson Forests without requiring a village.
Nether Cats are immune to fire and lava. An eligible following Nether Cat also grants its owner Fire Resistance.
End Cats
Black-coated cats with purple eyes, found naturally in outer-End highlands, midlands and barrens—not the central island.
An eligible following End Cat prevents Endermen from becoming angry solely because its owner looks at them. It can also grant three seconds of Slow Falling during a fall, with a shared sixty-second owner cooldown.
Gaze protection does not stop retaliation after attacks or clear existing anger.
Both types grant owner benefits only while living, loaded, tamed, in Follow mode, in the owner's dimension, and not manually sitting. There is no distance limit, but unloaded cats grant nothing and never force chunks to load.
Dimensional types are separate from the five classes. Existing cats remain ordinary, and travelling through portals does not change a cat's type.
Cat spawn eggs create Nether Cats in Nether Crimson Forests and End Cats in eligible outer-End habitats. Elsewhere, they create ordinary cats. This includes dispenser eggs and egg-created kittens.
Hungry Cats, Happy Cats
Tamed cats have hunger, and food now supports their health through regeneration rather than healing them instantly.
- Normal supported food restores 25 hunger.
- Favorite food restores 50 hunger.
- Well-fed cats gradually regenerate health.
- Starvation cannot reduce them below 1 HP.
- Hunger does not deplete while cats are unloaded, and Peaceful difficulty prevents hunger depletion and starvation damage.
- Feeding a completely full cat consumes nothing.
Feeding immediately shows your cat’s current health and hunger using compact icons.
Automatic feeding starts at 50 hunger or lower and continues until the cat reaches at least 80. You can still feed them manually above that threshold.
Beds, Bowls, and Home Life
Cat Beds
Use a Training String on a bed, then on your owned cat to link them. Each cat can have one home, and each bed can belong to one cat.
Choose a behavior mode from the bed menu:
- Follow: Accompany you while retaining the home link.
- Stay: Remain at home.
- Wander: Explore the home area and return for occasional naps.
- Guard: Patrol the home area and warn about threats, briefly outlining a selected threat with Glowing.
Choose a roaming radius within the server’s configured limits. Manual sitting takes priority over movement, food seeking, and fetching.
Cat Beds support all sixteen vanilla dye colors. Craft a bed with one dye, or use dye on your own placed bed, to recolor its cushion without losing its home link. Survival dyeing consumes one dye only when the color changes.
Food Bowls
Food Bowls hold three slots of supported raw food. Only cats belonging to the bowl’s placing owner may eat from it.
Cats can also eat eligible dropped food when enabled. They consume one item at a time and respect applicable item protections.
Breeding and Inheritance
Breeding uses a separate Cat Treat, not ordinary meals.
Only the owner can offer a treat for breeding. Cats must be adults, at full health, and have at least 80 hunger.
Kittens inherit health and movement traits from their parents, with configurable chances for small mutations. Their coat comes from either parent, and class inheritance is configurable.
Inherited traits survive a wild kitten’s first taming. Progression and equipment bonuses are not inherited.
Kittens also inherit one parent's dimensional type. They inherit one type only—not combined Nether and End abilities—and retain it through taming, saving and revival.
Playtime and Second Chances
Fetch with Yarn Balls
Throw a reusable Yarn Ball for an eligible nearby owned cat. The first cat to claim it carries it back and drops it near you.
Sitting, danger, or losing contact with the owner can interrupt play.
Revival Collars
When revival is enabled, a tamed cat drops a Cat Collar on death. It is delivered to an available owner or dropped at the death location.
Use it on a block to revive your companion. Their traits, progression, and supported saved state are retained. Copied collars cannot create duplicate living pets.
Optional bed revival can provide another chance when a collar is definitively destroyed and the cat has a valid linked home. This feature is disabled by default.
Accidental-Attack Recovery
For supported retaliation behavior, wait five quiet seconds after an accidental attack, then deliberately sneak-interact with wheat to make peace.

Commands and Configuration
Owner commands work on a looked-at cat within eight blocks:
/cozycats mode <follow|stay|wander|guard>/cozycats home unlink/cozycats droppedfood <on|off>
Home-dependent modes require a valid linked bed.
Server owners can customize hunger, abilities, breeding, inheritance, care permissions, revival, trades, notifications, and more. Server settings also control Ancient Fish fishing chances, dimensional spawning, and dimensional owner abilities.
- Fabric:
config/cozys-improved-cats.json, with Cloth Config and optional Mod Menu. - Forge/NeoForge: Native configuration files; Fabric dependencies are not required.

⚠️ Existing Worlds and Uninstalling
This mod replaces vanilla cats with custom entities. Removing it before restoring those cats can cause them to disappear when the world is loaded.
A closed-world cat converter is available to restore living tamed Improved Cats to vanilla cats before uninstalling. Instructions available in the wiki.
Before removing the mod:
- Back up your world using your preferred backup method.
- Close the world or stop the server.
- Follow the converter instructions while the mod is still installed.
- Confirm conversion completed successfully and verify your cats before removing the mod.
The converter does not create backups, revive dead pets, or refund custom items and blocks. Mod-specific items and blocks may disappear after removal.
Dimensional cats are restored to vanilla red/all-black appearances where representable. Their dimensional visuals and abilities cannot remain after removing the mod.
Do not downgrade a world using the latest feature set to an older mod version. If you already loaded the world without the mod, recovery may require restoring a backup.
