THE NIGHT IS LONG, AND COLD...

You awake in a strange land. The sun is gone, and there are unsettling sounds coming from all directions. The air is cold, and you feel your sanity beginning to slip. All you have is an old canteen and a few torches. Without the dim glow of your trusty light-source, you would surely be dead.

Despite the harsh reality you find yourself in, there is only one option available to you:  survive.

Torches and lanterns will burn out in time, but lighting the area is the best way to stay sane. Campfires will burn out if not fueled, but they will warm your body and restore your mind. Build a base, gather resources, light up your surroundings, keep warm, eat proper food and stay hydrated, all while keeping the lurking evils in the darkness at bay.

Can you survive Eternal Darkness..?

---

World of Darkness is a dark fantasy survival modpack which takes place in a beautiful, yet hostile, world of endless night. Using mods such as Total Darkness and carefully configured visual settings, custom Optifine settings (required) and a highly customized shader (Complimentary Unbound, highly reccommended but not required if your PC can't handle it), you will find yourself in an immersive and challenging world.

There are many rewards to find by exploring the world, mining deep underground, and establishing a base, but there are many dangers to endure, such as torches and lanterns burning out over time (Hardcore Torches mod), body temperature and thirst to stay on top of (Legendary Survival mod) and diet requirements to achieve important buffs (Diet mod). To overcome these challenges, there are a number of mods added to help you out, adding better loot, more equipment options, more food varieties, hidden treasures, and so-on.

SURVIVAL TIPS:

  • Items in your offhand will be kept on death, as will a few "Soulbound" items you start with. This is to keep you from losing torches and other important items when you die. Dying without a torch handy will strand you in total darkness, so keep a stock of torches at all times!
  • It is worth fortifying your spawn area so that dying will not be a frustrating sprint back to your base until you find a bed.
  • Many items that are common in vanilla Minecraft are difficult or impossible to find. There are no animals, so simple things like gathering food or making a bed are extremely challenging. Beds can be found in generated structures, and farming will be a key source of food.
  • Torches and lanterns will burn out. Torches can be refueled with coal, and you can craft a fuel cannister to refuel lanterns, which can be refilled with animal fat (rare) or coal (common).
  • Campfires are crafted unlit. You can light them with a flint and steel. You can right-click a campfire to see how much burn time is left. You can toss fuel items (anything you can burn in a furnace) onto them to refuel them.
  • Rain will extinguish campfires, and cause torches to smoulder (stop burning until the rain ends).
  • Standing near a light source will stop your sanity from draining. Standing by a camp fire will recover sanity. Many actions (such as levelling up, making advancements, or eating food) will restore sanity. Many actions (such as being near monsters, being in the dark or being low on hunger) will cause you to lose sanity.
  • Canteens can be filled at any water source. They can be cooked in a furnace etc. to boil the water, cleaning it. Drinking unboiled water will cause you to have a "thirst" debuff.
  • You cannot sleep in a bed to pass time, but you can set your spawn at a bed as usual.
  • Monsters will become harder over time, and as you venture further from spawn.
  • Eating a variety of food groups will give you buffs.
  • On death, your items will be saved in a recoverable corpse.
  • Fishing is a great way to get food.
  • Certain blocks do not drop items, such as vanilla torches and lanterns (which never burn out but will generate in the world as part of structures), as well as jack-0-lanterns, decorative light source blocks in dungeons, and "soul" light sources. This is to prevent players from easily bypassing the need to refuel light sources.
  • The "Night Vision" effect is generally available, but it is strongly recommended not to use it. It completely trivializes much of this modpack, and is not in the spirit of this experience. It will likely be banned in a more formal way in the future, but for now... just don't do it.  I trust you.
