With Ultimine and FTB Quests, I've optimized a server to help new players understand each mod's progression. No need to feel overwhelmed...
There are also many mods that change minecraft to give it modern game polish like: Distant horizons, Inventory Profiles Next, Accessories, Parcool, and Shoulder Surfing Reloaded (I could keeping going...).
