To obtain wood tree punching is not an option. Early game you must kill mobs to obtain bones and break leaves to obtain sticks to create bone tools to harvest wood. Obviously at this current stage nothing is locked behind levels so you can just find new tools but in future versions tools, armor and items will be locked by levelling system so in early game your only option is to create bone tools.

 

Oh and be careful hurting passive mobs... they don't just let it happen anymore..
