How to get started?

You will want to start with your pyrotechnic book, that will guide you along for a long while until it bleeds into vanilla minecraft at which point JEI will take over.

Items such as the chopping block and worktable will be essential, as will crude tools.

Full moons are when grues are enabled to attack in the overworld... your first night is a full moon so it is essential that you find someplace safe and well lit to spend your night as there is no surviving an attack from a grue.

Important Notes

You need to maintain your water levels, and although you can drink from sitting water, it is as advisable as eating rotten flesh.

Keep your noise down at night, it will attract unwanted attention.

If you make yourself bleed, it is suggested to get away from the blood as it too will attract attention.
