I've decided to add Spice of Life: Carrot Edition, and Pam's HarvestCraft to go with that (also Pam's SimpleHarvest integration). This won't change the game for those who are content with eating stacks of 64 plain bread so they don't have to spend time with advanced farming before they explore, but the people I play with are the type who like to farm and cook, and who would enjoy the idea of getting buffed by eating a varied diet.
