Description:

Cursed Lands originally started off as a small personal magic modpack in 2016. Since then, a lot has changed - a lot of mods were added and updated to add new experiences and expand upon the existing, but a lot of mods were also removed due to incompatibilities, found bugs or restrictive licensing that would not allow me to publicize the modpack. As such, I present to you the Cursed Lands in it's current form - a nostalgic, magic-focused and slightly hardcore experience. Let me elaborate, then.

A lot of really good mods have stayed on 1.7.10, no matter how much time has passed. Witchery, Ars Magica, Hardcore Ender Expansion, to name a few well-known examples. Most of them are abandoned - nobody is going to update them to a later version, so playing 1.7.10 is the only way to experience them again. But on top of that, a plenty of new mods have been released for this version too - those ones you won't find in old 1.7.10 packs, as they too, haven't updated in a long time. This modpack aims to give the best of both worlds. But that is not the end. Since the early days of 1.7.10 modding, I have noticed a few mods that were almost never included in packs - take Essential Craft or Jewellery Craft. Completed mods, with lots of content, and yet no modpack author wanted to include them for some reason. This modpack, among other things, aims to change that and give you, the player, the content you've been missing out on.
As it started out as a magic pack, it still is one - the majority of content mods are still magic-themed. We've got all of them - Thaumcraft and 10+ add-ons for it, Ars Magica 2, Botania, Witchery, Blood Magic, Evilcraft, you name it - whatever branch of magic your heart desires. There are no heavy tech-themed mods, but there are some steampunk mods, like Flaxbeard's Steam Power and Cogs of the Machine. They've been included mainly for two reasons - for one, I don't feel like steampunk is that high-tech and most magic settings probably have aspects of it in one way or another. And as for the second reason, both Flaxbeard's and Cogs are exclusive 1.7.10 mods - of which this pack tries to provide as many as possible.
As I don't really expect new players to start out at 1.7.10, this pack also aims to provide a bit of challenge for the seasoned players. But at the same time, I don't want it to be ridiculously difficult similar to RLCraft and the like. The main challenge starting out will probably be the darkness - with the "Fear the Darkness" mod, it deals damage. However, there are two mods to make things easier - first of all, there is a mod that makes darkness actually look like darkness, making it easier to spot. On top of that, the mod has dynamic lights integration, meaning you can walk around with a torch in hard without getting hurt in dark areas. Then, to add a bit of challenge, the realistic torches mod is also there, meaning that torches placed eventually go out. To counter it, there is the bone torches mod - if you make a torch using a bone instead of a stick, it won't go out. The last hardcore element are mods that add special events - mainly the blood moon from random things and Invasions from HW Invasions mod. Almost every single one of these mods has been configured for a better difficulty balance.

The questline offered by this pack is by no means large and in no way, shape or form is a guide through the game. Think of the quests included as distant goals to strive towards rather than something you need to do right now as the next progression step. But nevertheless, I think some of them are pretty fun. As a bonus quest, find all the references in the quests :p
