YUNG's Better Portals aims to completely reinvent the vanilla Nether portal system. By default, this mod prevents vanilla Nether portals from being created. This feature can be disabled in the config.

This is the first public release, and as such there may be bugs. Please back up your world before adding this mod to be safe!
