Forge 1.20.1 | The Terrain Map Update
🗺️ Terrain Map System Built from scratch
The kingdom map has been completely rebuilt. No more blank background the world is now rendered in real time as you explore it.
Minimap (always visible, top-right)
- Live terrain rendering biome colors, surface blocks, height shading
- Shows water, sand beaches, dirt paths, stone, tree canopy, snow and more
- Fog of war unexplored chunks appear dark until you walk near them
- Soft fog edges explored/unexplored boundary blends naturally
- Gold border frame
- Player arrow rotates with your facing direction
- Off-screen directional indicators on the minimap border always know where your villages, missions and waypoints are even when they're far away
- Distance displayed next to each indicator (e.g. 149m, 2.1k)
Full Map (press M)
- Full-screen terrain map with zoom (scroll wheel) and pan (click + drag)
- Zoom range: 0.5× to 6×
- Center on Player button snaps camera back to your position
- Coordinates displayed in bottom-right corner
- Village count shown in top-right
🏴 Village Beacons
Villages are no longer plain dots. Each village displays a distinct beacon shape:

⚔️ Mission Beacons
Active missions appear on both the minimap and full map as animated pings.
- Animated ring pulses outward and fades while mission is active
- Automatically removed when mission is completed or failed
- Color coded by tier:
- Tier 1 → Yellow
- Tier 2 → Orange
- Tier 3 → Red
- Tier 4 → Purple
- Exclamation mark shape on minimap edge when off-screen
📍 Player Waypoints
Set your own custom waypoints directly on the map.
- Right-click anywhere on the full map to place a waypoint
- Name it and choose a color (6 color options)
- Waypoints appear as gold diamonds on both maps
- Directional indicators show on minimap edge when off-screen
- Waypoints are saved between sessions
- Remove a waypoint by right-clicking it on the map
💰 Mission Loot Chests
Every mission structure now contains loot chests filled with tiered rewards.
Tier 1 Bandit Camp
- Iron ingots, bread, arrows, gold, leather armor
Tier 2 Pillager Outpost
- Iron armor, crossbow (enchanted), emeralds, gold, shield
Tier 3 Dark Fortress
- Diamond armor (enchanted), enchanted books, golden apple, netherite scrap, totem of undying (chance)
Tier 4 Boss Lair
- Netherite armor and weapons (enchanted), Mending/Fortune/Silk Touch books, totem of undying, elytra (rare), beacon (very rare), trident
⚙️ Performance
- Terrain scanning runs on a dedicated background thread zero server tick impact
- GPU texture baking entire terrain map is a single draw call regardless of map size
- Chunk-on-load scanning fills the map instantly as chunks are loaded
- Explored chunks are cached after initial scan, ongoing CPU cost is nearly zero
- Texture rebuild debounced no frame hitches when many chunks arrive at once
- 16×16 block sampling per chunk for sharp terrain detail
🛠️ Admin Commands
/kingdoms admin clearterrain — wipes terrain cache, forces fresh rescan
📋 Known Issues
- Fog of war does not yet apply per-player (all explored chunks visible to all players on the server)
