What's new
1.8.1
Two fixes in the fragment game, and eyes that close on their own.
The forceps moved a centimetre
Here is why: the instrument only moved while a button was held. That is the wrong half of the gesture - a player moves the mouse, sees an instrument that does not follow it, and draws the only available conclusion, which is that the thing is stuck an inch from the wound. It was not stuck. It was waiting to be dragged, and nothing said so.
Now the mouse aims it and the button closes the jaws: the same division of labour every other pointing device in the game uses.
And with it, the reach is drawn. A faint arc swept round from the mouth of the wound, because a rule that stops the job should never be a surprise - and with fingers that arc is visibly, humiliatingly smaller. There is more of the reach as well: what was being held back as margin was room the instrument needed.
Fragments came out with bare fingers
Also found, and it was arithmetic rather than intent. The deepest fragment was placed past the reach of fingers - correct as far as it went. But closing on a fragment does not require the tip to be on it; anything inside the width of the grip counts. The gap was five pixels and the grip was fifteen, so "past the fingers" was true only on paper.
The deep one is now placed past the fingers and past the grip.
And the other half: the server refuses a fragment pull with no forceps, before the attempt is spent rather than after a minute of picking at a wound for nothing. An arrow is still pulled by hand - a shaft with an end sticking out of somebody is exactly what fingers are for.
The eyes close
Minecraft has always counted how long since you slept and has always done one thing with it: send birds. That is a threat from outside. What three days awake actually does is on the inside of your own eyelids, and it is the one state in this mod that nobody but you can see at all.
Past the first day - one night up is not a medical fact - the lids start coming down, and they come down further the longer it goes on. But lids sitting at a height are a letterbox. What actually reads as tired is the other half: the blinks get longer and the gaps between them get shorter. That is what is drawn, with the edge of the lid soft, because light does not stop at a line.
And one of those blinks stops being a blink
This part is mine. At the far end of the count - rarely, and more often the further it has gone - the eyes close and do not open for a second and a half. The world goes away and comes back with you somewhere else.
Mechanically it is the shortest faint there is and it borrows that whole path: black screen, nothing moves, nothing to treat and no time to. What it costs is a second and a half of a moment you did not choose, and wherever you were standing. On a ledge, in water, in front of something that was already swinging - that is the whole of it.
It never fires on somebody already on the floor or under anaesthetic; they have enough happening. There is exactly one way out of the count, and it is the one the game has always had.
