Runic Races is a fantasy-focused Origins add-on for Minecraft 1.20.1 that adds 24 distinct races across 6 families, each with unique abilities, drawbacks, and playstyle-defining traits. It's a medieval fantasy set designed for the Runecraft modpack.

Runic Races

24 races. 6 families. One Origin choice that changes how you play.

Runic Races is a flagship Origins add-on built for the Runecraft modpack. Every race has meaningful strengths, honest drawbacks, and deep integration with the wider mod ecosystem. This is not a cosmetic reskin -- picking Wyvern-Blooded means you soar through the sky but panic underground. Picking Vampire means the night is yours but the sun will kill you.


Races at a Glance

Mortal -- Human, Halfling, Nomad, Giant-Blooded Versatile and well-rounded. Humans adapt to any environment. Halflings dodge what they can't tank. Giant-Blooded shake the earth when they land.

Fae -- High Elf, Wood Elf, Sprite, Changeling, Dryad Magical and fragile. Sprites glide permanently but die in three hits. Dryads heal allies but burn like kindling. Changelings vanish at will but the gods don't trust them.

Beast -- Wolfkin, Dragonborn, Catfolk, Minotaur, Serpentfolk Physical and primal. Catfolk survive lethal blows (once every 10 minutes). Dragonborn breathe fire. Wolfkin rally the pack with a howl.

Underfolk -- Mountain Dwarf, Deep Dwarf, Goblin, Troll, Kobold Tough and specialized. Dwarves get crafting bonuses from their Forge Blessing. Trolls regenerate but burn twice as fast. Kobolds set traps.

Dragon -- Wyvern-Blooded, Elder Drake Powerful and constrained. Both can glide and flap their wings mid-air. Wyvern-Blooded suffer claustrophobia indoors. Elder Drakes are ancient and proud -- with penalties to match.

Cursed -- Vampire, Lycanthrope, Revenant Risk and reward. Vampires scale with the day/night cycle. Lycanthropes surge uncontrollably at low HP. Revenants respawn where they died.


Custom HUD

Every race gets a polished cooldown HUD:

  • Ability icons with real-time cooldown progress (vertical clock-wipe)
  • Family-colored frames -- gold for Mortal, magenta for Fae, green for Beast, slate for Underfolk, red for Dragon, purple for Cursed
  • Keybind hints that show the correct key for each ability (Q for actives, Space for wing flap, nothing for passives)
  • State runes -- small colored glyphs showing active passive states (home biome, sunlight burn, claustrophobia, etc.) with hover tooltips
  • Fully configurable: position, scale, opacity, minimal mode

Mod Integrations

All optional. If a mod is missing, its features are silently skipped.

  • Runic Skills -- Starting skill bonuses per race
  • Runic Gods -- Divine affinity and restrictions
  • Ars Nouveau -- Fae mana discount, Troll mana penalty
  • Iron's Spellbooks -- Per-race spell damage modifiers
  • Curios -- Extra slots for Goblins, Dwarves, Elves
  • Apotheosis -- Luck modifiers
  • Pehkui -- Per-race body scaling with jump compensation
  • Feathers -- Per-race stamina counts

Installation

  1. Requires Origins Forge (1.10.0.9+)
  2. Drop runic_races-1.0.0.jar into your mods/ folder
  3. If upgrading from the old KubeJS datapack version, delete kubejs/data/runic_races/

Keybinds

  • Flap Wings (unbound by default) -- flap upward while gliding
  • Fold Wings (unbound by default) -- cancel glide mid-air
  • If both are unbound, Jump acts as flap and double-tap Jump folds wings

Design Philosophy

Race is what you ARE, not what you grind. Traits are static, drawbacks are honest, and nothing is locked behind your Origin choice. Race changes how you play, not how well.
