Re:Zero – Return by Craft

Re:Zero – Return by Craft is a large adventure/RPG mod inspired by Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World.

The goal of the mod is to recreate the feeling of the series inside Minecraft, building relationships with characters, gaining strange abilities, and surviving a dangerous world where death isn't always the end.

So far you'll meet characters like Rem, Ram, Emilia, Puck, Felt, Beatrice, Otto, Patrasche, and Echidna, travel between important locations, unlock magical abilities, and slowly uncover new mechanics as you progress.

Return by Death

Death works differently in this mod.

When the player dies, the world rewinds to a previous point, allowing you to try again with the knowledge you gained before dying.

Items, mobs, and other world elements reset as if time was reversed.

But abusing this power has consequences.

Each death increases the Witch's Scent on the player. The stronger the scent becomes, the more aggressive hostile mobs will be toward you. The only way to reduce it is by resting and sleeping frequently.

A visual effect plays when Return by Death triggers, and a checkpoint system tracks your death count and manages exactly what world state gets restored each time.

Companions

Character can act as companions who follow the player, help in combat, and interact with the world around them.

Companions can:

  • Follow the player
  • Fight enemies (with magic when there is nothing in their hands or without when they have weapons)
  • React to combat situations
  • Return to their home
  • Recover if they are defeated
  • Interact through dialogue
  • Respond to what you say in chat with flavor reactions
  • Comment on the world around them based on context, such as low health, wather, the time, or after a battle
  • Receive orders through chat, such as telling them to mine, guard, or follow

If a companion is defeated they will enter a downed state instead of disappearing permanently.

Companions can also become jealous if you pay too much attention to another character, adding another layer to the relationship system.

Dialogue & Relationships

The mod includes a branching dialogue and relationship system built on a 1000-point affinity scale.

Affinity tiers:

  • 0 - 199: Stranger
  • 200 - 399: Acquaintance
  • 400 - 599: Friend
  • 600 - 799: Close
  • 800 - 1000: Devoted

As your relationship with a character increases, new dialogue options and interactions become available. Higher tiers unlock gated dialogue that cannot be seen until enough affinity has been built. Some characters can eventually be married, which unlocks a permanent post-marriage dialogue tier.

Dialogue nodes are tracked so the same lines are not repeated across sessions, keeping conversations feeling fresh as your relationship grows.

Characters may respond differently depending on your choices and your relationship level with them.

This system makes it easier to expand conversations and story interactions as the mod grows.

(Rem has a hidden interaction that can occur when sleeping in a bed next to her set one, there are 30 unique interactions that can occur.)

Mana & the Magic Gate

The mod includes a mana system tied to spellcasting and the player's magical gate.

Overusing magic without resting strains the mana gate, and breaking it applies a permanent max health penalty of up to three levels until it is healed.

Sleeping restores the mana gate and also halves the current Witch's Scent level.

Magic & Abilities

Several magic-related mechanics inspired by the series are included.

Shamak Crystal

A crystal that casts a Shamak-like ability, creating a dark cloud around enemies and weakening them. Using it too frequently without rest will strain and eventually break the player's mana gate.

Water Magic - Huma

Unlocked by consuming a Blue Oni Tear. Fires a water bolt projectile at enemies.

Wind Magic - Fura

Unlocked by consuming a Red Oni Tear. Fires a wind slash projectile at enemies.

Minya

Beatrice's signature spirit magic. Unlocked by bringing her a Tome Fragment and receiving a Minya Sigil. Once activated, summons Minya spirits that seek out and attack nearby enemies.

Authority of Sloth - Unseen Hand

After the player experiences enough deaths, they can unlock the Unseen Hand, a powerful ability inspired by the Authority of Sloth.

A Magic Dial interface lets you switch between your unlocked spells quickly during play.

Weapons & Items

Rem's Morning Star

Rem's iconic weapon is included and uses particles to simulate the chained weapon being swung and launched. (When given to Rem she will use it.)

Oni Horn

A rare item needed to craft the morning star. Consuming it releases a burst of rage that temporarily boosts the player while weakening nearby enemies.

Oni Tears

  • Blue Oni Tear - Unlocks Water Magic - Huma when consumed.
  • Red Oni Tear - Unlocks Wind Magic - Fura when consumed.

Bokko Fruit

A rare fruit that can repair the player's mana gate. Found in lush caves.

Echidna's Tea

A unique item offered by the Witch of Greed inside the Tea Dimension. Drinking it teleports Echidna into the Overworld and begins your companion relationship with her.

Subaru's Phone

Players start with Subaru's phone, which will be used for future mechanics and features.

Subaru's Notes

A notebook that automatically records important information as the player progresses. Open it at any time to review what has been discovered so far.

Lugnica Insignia

Obtained by trading with Felt. This item allows the player to access the manor.

Subaru's Tracksuit

A craftable cosmetic chest armor piece. Wearing it reduces mana gate strain from Shamak use.

Oni Ward Charm

An offhand charm that significantly reduces knockback taken while equipped.

Frozen Petal

A rare item with magical properties tied to ice magic.

Tome Fragment

A page covered in diagrams. Bringing it to Beatrice is part of the process for unlocking Minya magic.

Spirit Stone of Odo

A passive item that slowly regenerates mana while carried in the player's inventory.

Companion Systems

Characters also have a number of background systems that make them feel more alive:

  • Home locations they return to
  • Sleeping behavior tied to actual beds
  • Basic schedules
  • Companion HUD elements showing status during play
  • Job and role systems (expandable for future updates)
  • A likeness system that tracks each companion's individual personality state
  • Magical combat abilities

Locations & Dimensions

The Tea Dimension

A custom dimension that contains the Tea Meadow biome and Echidna's iconic picnic setup. Meeting Echidna here and drinking her tea is how you begin the process of recruiting her as a companion.

The Sanctuary

A structures-based location that includes the Sanctuary trials. Completing the trials is part of the progression path and is tied to unlocking certain characters and areas.

Roswaal's Manor

A large structure that can be entered after obtaining the Lugnica Insignia from Felt. The manor barrier can be activated and deactivated based on story progression.
