Descriptions for the New Ores, Alloys, and Materials
Obsidian Shards
A simple but essential crafting material. A single obsidian block yields 4 obsidian shards, and they can always be crafted back into a full obsidian block whenever needed. More importantly, crafting 2 obsidian shards together yields 4 obsidian rods, a sturdier, darker alternative to regular sticks. These rods are required to craft both Soulsteel and Voidsteel tools, fully replacing the use of regular sticks in those recipes. Simple to obtain, but crucial to progression.
Overworld Ores
Corundum
While exploring caves, you may come across massive blobs of calcite, and that's exactly where corundum generates. The only way to find it is by mining through those large formations and hoping for the best, but it's well worth the effort. Corundum sits between diamond and netherite in terms of strength, making it one of the most powerful ores the overworld has to offer. You can also find Corundum Horse Armor in structures scattered around the world, which provides more protection and toughness than its diamond counterpart.
Mithril
This ore spawns in lush caves in both stone and deepslate variants. It's not particularly rare, but it's absolutely worth mining once you find it. It has lower durability than diamond, but higher enchantability and mining efficiency, with attack damage that rivals corundum. What makes mithril truly special is its passive ability, Mithril Magic, as long as a mithril ingot is somewhere in your inventory, any mithril tools or armor currently in your hand, off-hand, or equipped will passively repair themselves over time, giving mithril near-infinite durability if managed well… though it's still limited by its own strength. Unfortunately, mithril does not have a horse armor variant due to its magical nature.
Aquamarine
This ore spawns beneath ocean biomes in both stone and deepslate variants. It's roughly as rare as diamond and matches it in strength 1:1. What sets aquamarine apart is its armor, and its horse armor, of course. Wearing aquamarine armor grants the special ability Tidal Grace, which provides +15% swim speed for each armor piece worn. The horse armor takes it a step further by finally allowing your horse to swim, with 50% water movement efficiency, making it surprisingly fast and agile in the water. The tools have no special abilities yet, but aquamarine is still a solid choice for water travel, especially when paired with Dolphin's Grace.
Ruby
This ore spawns beneath hot biomes (Savannah, Desert, Mesa, etc.) and is rarer than diamond, and this is where the ores really start getting powerful. Ruby armor grants +15% fire protection with each armor piece worn, while ruby tools apply a Scorching effect (2 seconds of fire) to any mob on hit. The horse armor grants 60% fire protection to your mount. In terms of strength, ruby tools and armor sit between corundum and netherite, though some would argue it surpasses netherite situationally thanks to its fiery nature.
Sapphire
This ore spawns beneath cold biomes (Taiga, Snowy Plains, Jagged Peaks, etc.) and shares the same rarity and base stats as ruby, but with a chilling twist. Instead of fire protection, sapphire armor grants +15% frost protection with each armor piece worn (reducing damage from powdered snow), while its tools apply a Chilling effect that briefly freezes any mob on hit. The horse armor grants 60% frost protection to your mount. It's essentially the cold-weather counterpart to ruby, making the two direct rivals.
Polarite
This ore spawns specifically beneath Ice Spike biomes, hidden inside packed ice and blue ice blobs deep underground. It's very rare, requires a diamond pickaxe to mine, and is arguably the strongest ore in the overworld. Polarite tools freeze mobs on hit, and a full armor set grants 100% frost protection (25% per piece), while the horse armor provides complete freezing immunity to your mount on top of being extremely durable. Good luck finding this one.
Nether Ores
Cinderium
This ore spawns throughout the entire nether and is quite common, making it easy to gear up with shortly after arriving. It has no special abilities so far beyond being a crafting ingredient for Soulsteel, but it's a reliable fallback when you're stranded in the nether without much to work with. Its tools and armor sit right between iron and diamond in terms of overall strength.
Topaz
This ore spawns rarely throughout the nether and rivals netherite in strength. Much like cinderium, topaz has no special abilities yet, but it has a lot more planned for the future. For now, it can be used to craft a full set of gear that's stronger than both ruby and sapphire, and also serves as the upgrade material for Gilded Soulsteel tools. A solid stepping stone before moving on to the stronger end-game ores.
Vermillion
This ore spawns throughout the entire nether and is quite common, though it can't be used to craft tools or armor directly. Instead, vermillion ore drops Vermillion Essence, which can be crafted into a Vermillion Crystal, a key ingredient for soulsteel. (Soulsteel tools are crafted from soulsteel ingots using obsidian rods, and are fiery weapons that set mobs ablaze for 6+ seconds on hit. The Soulsteel Bow is 2.0x stronger than a regular bow and also deals fiery damage on impact.) Vermillion also introduces 2 new items: the Blood Sigil and the Vermillion Core. Once you have a Soulsteel Sword, combining it with these two items gives you the Blood Tempered Blade, a weapon that carries all the same fiery abilities as soulsteel, but adds a new Lifesteal mechanic that heals you with each hit (0.1 multiplier). This blade can be further upgraded into the Bloodlust Sword, which is significantly stronger and boosts lifesteal to 0.25, a true endgame weapon. On top of that, any soulsteel tool can be upgraded into a Gilded Soulsteel variant by combining it with a Tool Upgrade Smithing Template (found in nether structures) and Topaz at a smithing table, resulting in an overall stronger version of that tool. Check the gallery for crafting recipes.
Solarite
This is the strongest nether ore by far, and it's extremely rare, only generating between Y levels 90 and 125, near the nether roof. It requires a netherite pickaxe to mine, but it's absolutely worth the search. As the name suggests, solarite's tools and armor grant powerful buffs whenever you're exposed to direct sunlight in the overworld, turning you into a near-unstoppable force. The full armor set provides Regeneration, Resistance, and Strength passively, along with 100% fire damage protection. These buffs also apply to your horse when using solarite horse armor. Keep in mind, even a single block of cover overhead is enough to cut off the effect entirely. (Good luck finding it tho.)
End Ores
Peridot
This ore spawns throughout the End and is fairly uncommon. Its tools and armor are stronger than both topaz and netherite, making it a solid early-End upgrade. It has no special abilities yet, but peridot plays an important role as the upgrade material for Voidsteel, a powerful new alloy.
Tourmaline
Shares the same spawn conditions and overall stats as peridot, but its primary value lies in being a key crafting ingredient for advanced end-game recipes, most notably the Void Sigil and Void Core.
Voidstone
A new magical ore that could arguably introduce the most content of any ore in the mod. Each voidstone block drops 1 Voidstone Fragment, and 4 fragments can be crafted into a Voidstone Crystal. That crystal, combined with a Soulsteel Ingot and additional fragments, can be used to craft 1 Voidsteel Ingot, the foundation for voidsteel tools and armor, which are crafted using obsidian rods instead of regular sticks. Voidsteel tools are blinding weapons, inflicting blindness, wither, and slowness on hit for a brief duration. The Voidsteel Bow is 3.25x stronger than a regular bow and applies the same blinding effects on impact, making it the strongest bow in the mod so far. Voidsteel armor provides Resistance and Strength that scale inversely with your health, the lower you are, the stronger the effect, reaching level IV of both at 2 hearts or below. On top of all that, any item crafted from voidstone is immune to the void and has no gravity, if dropped, they will slowly float upward indefinitely, so be quick to collect them. Using Voidstone Crystals and Tourmaline, you can also craft the Void Sigil and the Void Core, both of which are required to craft the Totem of the Abyss, a game-changing new totem crafted from 2 regular totems, 3 void cores, 2 void sigils, 1 dragon head, and 1 voidstone crystal. This totem has 2 uses (cheating death twice), grants powerful buffs and brief invulnerability on activation, and will automatically teleport you to safety if you fall into the void (defaulting to your set spawnpoint, or your world spawn if none is set). Voidsteel tools can also be upgraded into Verdant Voidsteel tools, which are significantly stronger, and currently the most powerful tools in the entire mod.
Enderite
The true endgame ore of the End, rivaling even voidsteel. It requires a solarite pickaxe to mine and is packed with unique abilities. The armor and horse armor introduce a powerful new effect called Void Reversal, whenever you drop below 4 hearts and take a hit, the attacking mob is launched into the air with Levitation II before plummeting to its doom, while you're automatically teleported to a safer location and granted temporary buffs and a burst of healing. For tools, every 4th successful fully-charged attack teleports you directly behind your target, giving you the element of surprise before they have time to react, especially effective against tough mobs or other players. The Enderite Bow is 3.0x stronger than a regular bow, and every 3rd fully-charged shot fires a Rift Arrow that teleports you to wherever it lands (only to safe locations, with no fall damage). The Enderite Crossbow is an all-around powerhouse, it has a chance to teleport you directly to the enemy you just shot, and can also be loaded with ender pearls, launching them significantly farther than you could ever throw them by hand.
Where to Find Horse Armor & the Tool Upgrade Smithing Template
Horse Armor
Most mystic horse armors are found in End City chests, this includes Corundum, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Peridot, and Tourmaline horse armors, all as rare drops. Enderite Horse Armor is the rarest of them all and is also exclusive to End Cities. Aquamarine Horse Armor can be found in Shipwreck and Buried Treasure chests, with a rare chance in Village Weaponsmith chests as well. Polarite Horse Armor is exclusive to Ancient City chests. Corundum Horse Armor has the widest availability and can also turn up in Village Weaponsmith, Dungeon, and Mineshaft chests for players who haven't reached the End yet.
Tool Upgrade Smithing Template
The Tool Upgrade Smithing Template, required to upgrade any Soulsteel tool into its Gilded Soulsteel variant at a smithing table (and verdant voidsteel), can be found across all four Bastion chest types: Treasure, Generic, Hoglin Stable, and Bridge. While looting bastions you'll also come across Obsidian Shards in those same chests, dropping in small quantities and serving as an essential early crafting material.
