The Backrooms Update — 1.2.0
A quick update focused on a new sanity system, working nether-style portals, smarter entities, and a lot of atmosphere and bug fixes.
Added
- Insanity / sanity system — the longer you stay, the more your mind frays, shown as a row of bubbles that pop one by one:
- 5 left → creeping black-vein screen overlay fades in
- 4 left → pounding heartbeat (faster as it worsens)
- 3 left → blindness
- 2 left → nausea
- 0 left → The Complex teleports you around (never into walls/suffocation)
- Two recoveries: step out to the overworld briefly to fully clear it, or shelter in a room/POI.
- ~90-second grace before insanity starts after entering.
- Potion of Insanity & Potion of Sanity — regular/splash/lingering, found in room loot.
- Spawn eggs for the Still Life and the Lifeform.
- Nether-style warp animation for threshold portals.
Changed
- Portals work like nether portals — overworld portal builds a matching one at the exact same spot in The Complex, paired so you return to the one you left from.
- Portals are breakable (gateway or frame, including inside The Complex).
- Still Lifes spawn a bit more and (in MP) can wear any visitor's real skin.
- Food less rare — more stocked chests, plus bread/cooked food.
- Poolroom ambience — soft underwater bed + varied dripping; grass is now silent; backrooms keep the hum + distant bangs.
Fixed
- Portals are reliable now
- Return portal no longer corrupted by overworld-build mirroring.
- Lifeform keeps hunting after you die and no longer gets stuck.
- Thin spots & mirrored builds now appear in already-explored areas, not just new chunks.
- Crash/freeze hardening around dimension crossings and chunk loading.
