What's new

[1.4.0] - August 25th, 2026

A major compatibility update adding full optional integration with Townstead, including new quests, village projects, situations, rewards, and quest conditions based on Townstead's simulation.

Townstead Integration

When Townstead is installed, MCA: Quests can now build quests around:

  • Villager hunger, thirst, rest, and other needs.
  • Professions and profession progress.
  • Villager skills.
  • Village buildings.
  • Village spirit and identity.
  • Overall resident wellbeing.

Townstead remains completely optional. Without it installed, MCA: Quests behaves normally.

New Townstead Content

Added:

  • 25 new quests
  • 5 village projects
  • 7 new situations

Examples include:

  • A Proper Night's Rest
  • Water for the Weary
  • Deep Water Days
  • The Long Harvest
  • Master of the Trade
  • Well-Fed Townstead
  • Raise the Docks
  • A Working Village

Server owners can disable the built-in Townstead quests while keeping the integration available for custom datapacks.

Deliver Items Directly to Villagers

Quests can now place delivered items directly into a villager's inventory.

This allows Townstead villagers to actually:

  • Eat delivered food.
  • Use supplied items.
  • Benefit from quest deliveries through Townstead's normal systems.

If the villager does not have enough inventory space, the hand-in is safely refused instead of partially consuming the items.

Quests Can Track Townstead Progress

New quest and project objectives can track things such as:

  • Improving a villager's needs.
  • Increasing profession progress.
  • Training skills.
  • Registering buildings.
  • Improving village spirit.
  • Keeping residents healthy.
  • Growing the workforce.

Village projects can now progress — or regress — automatically as the village itself changes.

Quests Suspend if Townstead Is Missing

Townstead-based quests no longer fail if Townstead is removed, disabled, or temporarily unavailable.

Instead, they suspend.

While suspended:

  • Progress is preserved.
  • Quest deadlines stop counting down.
  • The quest can still be abandoned.
  • The Quest Log explains why the quest is paused.
  • Progress resumes normally if Townstead becomes available again.

This makes removing or temporarily disabling Townstead much safer for existing worlds.

Townstead Quest Information

Townstead quests can now show useful context directly in the Quest Log, such as:

  • Villager profession and rank.
  • Relevant needs.
  • Work schedule.
  • Village spirit.

Only information relevant to that quest is displayed.

This can be disabled with:

showTownsteadQuestContext = false

New Townstead Commands

Added admin tools for checking the integration:

  • /mcaquests compat townstead status
  • /mcaquests compat townstead probe
  • /mcaquests compat townstead snapshot

These help server owners and datapack creators check Townstead support and inspect nearby villager data.

Configuration

Added a new [compat.townstead] configuration section with options for:

  • Enabling or disabling the integration.
  • Enabling built-in Townstead content.
  • Townstead reactions.
  • Need rewards.
  • Profession XP rewards.
  • Skill rewards.
  • Polling frequency.
  • Large-server performance limits.
  • Crisis thresholds.
  • Debug logging.

Improved Reward Handling

  • Townstead rewards that cannot be applied no longer leave a completed quest permanently stuck.
  • By default, the quest still completes and the failed Townstead-specific reward is skipped.
  • Server owners can configure failed rewards to block completion instead.
  • Datapacks cannot bypass Townstead's normal profession progression limits unless the server explicitly allows it.

Performance Improvements

Townstead village checks are now spread across multiple passes instead of scanning everything at once.

This helps keep the integration lightweight on larger servers with many villagers and villages.

Interface Improvements

  • Improved placement of the Quests button in MCA's villager menu.
  • It now avoids controls added by Townstead and other mods instead of overlapping them.
  • Townstead reactions triggered by quests are cosmetic and can never prevent a quest from completing.

Fixed

  • Fixed situation detection potentially stopping permanently after switching from an older world to a newer world with a lower game time.
  • Improved handling of Townstead being added, removed, or partially incompatible.
  • Added additional safeguards so one changed Townstead feature does not disable the entire integration.

Localization

Added 314 new translation entries for the Townstead integration.

Full support is included for:

  • English (en_us)
  • Brazilian Portuguese (pt_br)

Compatibility

  • Supports Townstead 0.7.5–0.7.x, verified with 0.7.6.
  • Townstead is completely optional.
  • Existing worlds require no save migration.
  • Removing Townstead from an existing world is safe.
  • Townstead quests suspend rather than being deleted or failed.
  • Client and server must both use MCA: Quests 1.4.0.
  • Network protocol updated from 9 → 10.
  • Existing datapacks remain compatible unless they directly use changed add-on APIs.
