What's new

v1.3.0

This is a major update focused on performance, full multiplayer support and per-world configuration.

⚠️ WARNING: this is a very important update. It changes how the mod processes the world and stores its data. Existing worlds are migrated automatically, but it is strongly recommended to back up your world before installing this version.

Major Changes

  • Massive performance improvements across the whole mod:
    • Skipped days are now caught up dramatically faster: in our tests, jumping from day 25 to day 199 went from about 280 seconds of server work to about 10.
    • The work of big catch-ups is now spread over several ticks, so the server no longer freezes when you return to an old area or skip many days.
    • Ash collapsing into caves during a catch-up now lands instantly instead of spawning tens of thousands of falling block entities (about 110,000 → 1,600 in our tests).
    • Lighter lighting updates: one light task per batch of chunks instead of one per block, and processed chunks are sent to players once, with their final light.
    • Faster water evaporation (sections without water are skipped) and heightmaps rebuilt only for chunks that actually changed.
    • No more forced chunk loading on phase changes or when checking mobs, and lower memory usage.
  • Full multiplayer support:
    • Phase titles and the end title are now shown to every player, dedicated servers included (they never appeared there before).
    • Phase music now plays for every player online, not only the first one.
    • HUD, sky and sun now follow the server state for everyone: synced on login, on every new day and after the Restoration Ritual.
    • Phase changes now refresh the areas around every player in the Overworld.
    • Days keep counting on dedicated servers even when nobody is online.
  • Per-world configuration:
    • Each world now has its own config file, same format as before: <world>/serverconfig/judgementdaymod-apocalypse.properties.
    • New worlds start from the template config/judgementdaymod-defaults.properties, so you can set your favourite settings once for all future worlds.
    • Worlds created with older versions automatically take over the old shared config and continue exactly where they left off.
  • New option startDelayDays: days of normal play before the apocalypse starts counting. The day counter stays hidden during the delay.
  • Customizable HUD:
    • Server owners can hide the day counter and the heat bar for everyone (showDayCounter, showHeatBar).
    • Each player can hide them just for themselves in config/judgementdaymod-client.properties.
    • The heat bar now appears only while you are actually heating up and disappears once you cool down. It also stays hidden in the Nether and the End, in Creative or Spectator mode, and outside the apocalypse.
  • Animal extinction: from 100% on, animals no longer appear by chance in the Overworld.
    • Blocked: natural spawning, world generation, structures, spawners, jockeys and events such as the wandering trader's llamas.
    • Forced births still work: breeding, eggs, buckets, spawn eggs, dispensers, commands, conversions and summons from other mods (for example rituals).
    • Trees that grow after the extinction get empty bee nests; bees already kept in hives are not affected.
    • Skeleton horses still spawn, lightning traps included. Wandering traders and allays are not affected.
    • Ending the apocalypse with the Restoration Ritual before 100% does not make animals extinct.
  • Unattended areas: mobs left outdoors in areas nobody visited during the apocalypse don't come back when you return. Invulnerable mobs and mobs protected by other mods are spared.

Bug Fixes

  • Areas you revisit now catch up on every destruction step they missed, so they look like the rest of the world, and the ash keeps descending correctly after 100%.
  • After the apocalypse ends, naturally or with the Restoration Ritual, the whole world (areas visited later included) stays exactly as it was on the last day.
  • No more dark or bright patches after areas are transformed: the light players see now matches the server, also along chunk borders.
  • Restarting the game or server no longer re-applies the current phase (danger heights lowered twice, title and music replayed).
  • Fixed a crash with apocalypseMaxDays lower than 5.
  • Invalid values in the config are now ignored with a warning instead of stopping the server; missing keys use the default values.
  • Fixed leftover block data (chests, signs and similar) after their blocks were turned into ash or fire.
  • The Heart of Oblivion used in the Restoration Ritual can no longer be picked back up during the ritual.

Technical Notes

  • Network protocol bumped to version 2: client and server must both run 1.3.0.
  • New PhaseTitlePacket and an extended ApocalypseSyncPacket (day, end day, danger height, HUD settings).
  • The last applied phase is now saved in the world config. Worlds from older versions keep their progress: destruction steps after the countdown are counted from the first day they run on 1.3.0.
  • The old shared config/judgementdaymod-apocalypse.properties is only read once, to migrate existing worlds.
  • New mixins for light tracking, animal spawning and bee nests, written as injections so other mods can still change the same methods.
  • Added an automated dedicated-server test suite (not included in the jar), used to verify that the world is transformed exactly as before after every optimization.
