Off the road

• A wide line costs nothing. Leaving the road no longer throws away your lap. Swing wide, slide over a verge, come back on: the lap goes on.
• A shortcut you shouldn't take sets you back, it doesn't finish you. Cut further round than a wide line, stay off the road for four seconds, or go over the edge, and you're set down on the road where you left it and held for a second. You keep the lap. While you're off, the bar counts down.
• The AI racers follow the same rule.

Shortcuts you can see

• Every shortcut is marked where the road forks. A gantry in the feature's colour arches over the straight line, with banners in the colours of the breeds that can take it, a sign, and a coloured stripe down the road into it. Blue water, green ridges, orange lava. A brown gantry means a bog that slows everyone.
• Your HUD calls it out. On the way in you're told whether your bird can take it straight or should go round the outside, with a chime when it can.
• Each course picks up its markers the next time a race runs there.

Old birds

Birds from older versions join the current rules. The first time a bird saved by an earlier version loads, it is converted once, and only once.

• Race progress keeps its share. First-place marks toward the old three-win promotion become points of nine. One mark is 3 points, two marks are 6. A Class S bird shows the full ladder.
• Birds from before bloodlines get born stats. A bird with no born stats at all rolls them from its birth grade, the same roll a wild bird gets today. A Wonderful bird starts ahead of a Poor one. Its greens training, wins, colour and grade stay as they were, so it races at least as well as before, and its foals now inherit a real bloodline.

A bird that won one or two sprints on 1.0.17 or 1.0.18 looks the same as an old bird to this conversion, so it gets the same lift.
