What's new

Burnt Fabric — 0.1.6

  • New smoke and fire mechanics
  • Many optimisations
  • Compats with Quark and Terralith added

Fire spread

  • Wood now burns and spreads much more slowly, so a house takes minutes rather than seconds
  • Dark oak burns slower still than other woods
  • Fire spreads downwards far less through planks, slabs, stairs, fences and gates — a roof fire no longer burns to the ground
  • Same for logs, unless the log is a bare trunk, so single trees still burn all the way down and 2x2 trees are much harder to burn
  • Lightning no longer starts fires by default
  • New settings: Wood Spread, Dark Oak Spread, and a downward spread control

Performance

  • Far fewer smoke particles, with a new Smoke Density setting (defaults to 40%)
  • Smoke now caps itself automatically so big fires thin out instead of dragging the frame rate down
  • Collapsing blocks are limited to 20 per second, so burning buildings no longer cause lag spikes
  • The collapse code does roughly a sixth of the work it used to
  • Collapsing blocks no longer spray dropped items everywhere when they land awkwardly

Ice and snow

  • Ice now melts into water instead of just vanishing (it evaporates in the Nether, like vanilla)
  • Fire now melts snow layers, snow blocks and powder snow
  • Burning grass now melts the snow on top of it every time — it used to be random

Claimed chunks

  • Fire no longer burns inside or spreads into chunks claimed with FTB Chunks or Open Parties and Claims
  • A block that was already burning when a chunk gets claimed now goes out instead of carrying on
  • New setting to allow burning in claimed chunks if you want the old behaviour
  • New /burnt noburn command — mark any area as fire-free, no claim mod needed
    • /burnt noburn here protects the chunk you're standing in, from bedrock to sky
    • /burnt noburn add <corner> <corner> protects any box you like — give the two corners in any order
    • /burnt noburn list, remove <number> and clear to manage them
    • Op-only, and the regions are saved with the world so they survive restarts
    • Useful for spawn, shared builds, event arenas, museums, or any server that doesn't run a claim mod
    • Works the same way the claim protection does: nothing catches fire, nothing spreads in, and anything already burning inside goes out

Smoke and flames

  • Smoke now disappears when it hits something solid instead of bunching up under ceilings
  • Smoke still drifts up through leaves and fences, but glass stops it
  • Smoke particles vary in brightness, giving plumes more depth
  • Smoke lasts for a wider range of times, so it no longer all fades at the same height
  • Flames are now visible at the base of distant fires
  • "Distant Smoke" is now called "Distant Plumes" and is off by default

Other mods

  • Cold Sweat: burning and smouldering blocks now give off heat properly, with sensible levels — standing on smouldering grass warms you slowly rather than doing nothing
  • TerraFirmaCraft: 141 plants now burn correctly, and supports now break instead of turning into logs
  • Nature's Spirit: joshua logs now burn as small logs
  • Regions Unexplored: barley now burns like tall grass

New

  • Bonemeal turns burnt grass into recovering grass, and recovering grass into grass — over an area, like bonemealing moss
  • The block mappings pack now ships with the mod and installs itself
    • On first run, Burnt drops an editable pack into config/burnt/mappings/ called "Burnt Block Mappings"
    • It's a normal datapack you can open and edit — 43 files, one per burn type, plus a README explaining each
    • Use it to tell Burnt how blocks from other mods should burn: which ones become smouldering logs, which become planks, which just burn away
    • It applies to every world, not just one save, so you set it up once
    • Edits take effect with /reload — no restart needed
    • It's only written if it isn't already there, so your changes are never overwritten. Delete it and it comes back fresh next launch

Fixes

  • Burnt wood walls now connect to each other properly
  • Fixed a crash when a wall reached the ember stage
  • Flint and steel now works in the rain when you're under cover
  • Flint and steel now works properly with TerraFirmaCraft installed
  • Stripped logs now turn into smouldering stripped logs, not stripped wood
  • Recovering grass no longer renders with gaps
  • Fixed missing textures that showed as pink and black blocks

Note on settings

Settings only take their new default when they aren't already in your config file, so if you're upgrading you'll keep your current values. Lightning and Distant Plumes are the exceptions — they were renamed internally so their new "off" defaults do apply on upgrade.
