Black Powder: Age of Sail 2.1.0 – The Brig

A second, bigger ship, real naval battles and better sailing. Drop-in update for 2.0.x worlds: no manual config changes needed, existing configs are updated automatically.

Brig (new ship)

  • Built at the shipyard from 384 planks, 96 logs, 64 wool, 48 string, 64 iron ingots and 8 cannons. Choose “Brig” in the shipyard window.
  • A two-masted warship: each mast carries a course and a topsail, plus a jib on the bowsprit. A captain’s cabin with windows sits at the stern, and the helm stands on its roof.
  • 8 cannons (4 per side), 9 seats, a 54-slot hold, a bunk, a chest on deck and an anchor at the bow.
  • Tougher but heavier: 1.8 times the hull of a sloop, 85% of its speed, and it turns wider. It sits deeper in the water, so it needs deeper water than a sloop.
  • Naval patrols: about one in four army or pirate patrol ships is now a brig, crewed by a commander and 5 soldiers.

Life on board

  • Anchor: press Space at the helm to drop or raise it. An anchored ship stays in place and can only turn slowly, so you can swing your broadside toward a target. The anchor drops when you leave the helm, and setting sail raises it.
  • Bunk: click the bunk on deck to respawn on your ship. You wake up on deck even if the ship has sailed far away. Sleeping in a normal bed replaces it, and a sunk or picked-up ship loses it.
  • Hold: click the chest on deck to open the hold (Shift + right-click on the ship still works).

Naval combat

  • Aiming: at the helm, hold right-click to aim. The trajectory dots, target marker and range bar appear, and the camera zooms in slightly. Left-click fires a broadside, but only while aiming, so you never fire by accident.
  • See-through sails while aiming: the canvas between you and the crosshair fades out almost completely, and the other sails turn faint. Every sail fades separately, so on a brig only the parts in your way disappear.
  • Sails and rigging can be shot to pieces: cannonballs flying through the sails tear the canvas (you can see the holes) and cut the rigging. A ship with damaged rigging is slower, down to 40% of its speed with no rigging left. High hits damage the hull less. Patch the sails with any wool (right-click on the ship, +25% per piece). The helm bar shows rigging in percent.
  • Visible damage: a battered ship lists to one side (up to 6 degrees) and sits lower in the water. Below 35% hull, smoke rises from the deck.
  • Pirates board you: a pirate ship with enough crew, or one facing an enemy already below 60% hull, comes alongside. Every 1.5 seconds a pirate jumps onto your deck (“Boarders!”) and attacks the helmsman or the crew. Army ships never board; they keep firing. Boarders left without a ship disappear once no player is nearby.

Sailing

  • Faster ships: sloop top speed raised from 0.28 to 0.40 blocks per tick, with quicker acceleration and braking. Your config is updated automatically if you never changed the value.
  • Dynamic wind: the wind now changes all the time, with gusts every 40 seconds to a few minutes, plus calmer and windier spells. It blows strongest and gustiest on the open and deep ocean, weaker on rivers, beaches and swamps, and weakest inland. Rain makes it stronger and thunderstorms much stronger. The wind bar (light, moderate, strong, storm), the waves and the wind sounds all follow the wind where your ship is.
  • Ships ride higher on the water: both the sloop and the brig now show more hull above the waterline.
  • More detailed ships:
    • Hulls: planking in two shades, a dark rubbing strake along the sides, smoother bow and stern, and a beakhead under the bowsprit. The sloop also has stern windows.
    • Deck: lanterns, cargo hatches, a capstan and coiled ropes. The brig adds an anchor windlass with chains, and fighting tops with railings and a lantern on both masts.
    • Rigging: shrouds lead to channels outside the hull, between the cannons, along with backstays, stays and a forestay to the bowsprit.
    • Sails: patches and reef points.

Fixes

  • Water, flying cannonballs and smoke no longer vanish behind see-through sails.
  • Players standing on a badly damaged ship no longer float above the deck.
  • A ship picked up with an axe now keeps its sail damage, so relaunching it no longer repairs the rigging for free.
  • Multiplayer: the server now checks how fast a player-steered ship moves, so a modified client cannot speed it up. Single-player is not affected.

Configuration

  • Updated default: sloopSpeed 0.40 (was 0.28). The brig takes its hull, speed, reload and cannonball speed from the sloop options with its own multipliers, so no new options are needed.
  • New testing commands: /bpnaval army_brig | pirates_brig | duel_brig (army, pirates and duel still spawn sloops).
