🔐 Unlock-Based Progression
Backpacked now features a progression system, which helps balance out backpacks from early to late game. Slay mobs and mine ores to build up your experience points, then spend them to unlock slots and other unlockable components in your backpacks. Rest assured, Backpacked provides config options to tweak this to your liking or even disable it completely.
⭐ Backpack Augments (Replaces Enchantments)
Previously Backpacked used vanilla's enchantment system to give your backpacks utiity, however this has now been completely replaced with Augments. Augments are a huge improvement over enchantments for many reasons, they can be swapped, disabled, configured, removed, and some can even be paired with other augments. They unlock huge gameplay improvements to make farming, mining, exploring, combat, and even death a better experience.
When you open your backpack, you'll be able to unlock up to three Augment Bays per backpack. Each Augment Bay allows you to assign an augment, toggle it on or off, and configure options specific to the assigned augment.
Here are the augments you'll find so far in Backpacked:
- Farmhand: Harvesting a fully-grown crop replants a matching seed from the backpack.
- Funnelling: Funnels picked up items into the backpack instead of the inventory.
- Hopper Bridge: Allows hoppers to insert and extract items from the players worn backpack.
- Imbued Hide: Strengthens the material of the backpack and makes it immune to fire damage.
- Immortal: Totems of Undying stored in the backpack will be activated on death
- Lightweaver: Automatically places torches from the backpack at the players feet when it gets too dark
- Lootbound (companion for Funnelling): Items dropped by mining blocks and killing mobs will pulled into the backpack from a distance.
- Quiverlink: Allows projectile weapons to pull ammunition from the backpack.
- Recall: Upon death, the backpack returns to the assigned Backpack Shelf.
- Reforge: Repairs damaged items inside the backpack upon picking up experience orbs.
- Seedflow: Sprinkles crop seeds from the backpack onto empty farmland around the player.
- A super secret augment. I'll let you try and find it.
In additon, server owners and modpack developers can tweak non-player facing config options related to augments and augment bays. You can even disable them if you find them too powerful or don't fit into your server or modpack.
🎨 GUI Overhaul
Backpacked has gone through its first complete overhaul of every GUI in the mod. These changes affect everything from the layout, textures, and user experience. You will now find Backpacked feels much more polished and has a more consistent style. A lot of work went into making everything feel pixel perfect. A list of changes could be mentioned here, but loading up the mod to experience it yourself will give you a better understanding.
📦 Improved Addon Support
You can now design and add your own custom backpacks with just a few JSON files in a specially crafted datapack/resource pack format. This includes designing the challenges that are used to unlock these backpacks.

🎉 Other New Features
✨ Added a new backpack called Vintage. This is the new default backpack and represents the third iteration of the mod. This follows the Legacy (from Backpacked 1.0) and Standard (from Backpacked 2.0) backpacks in the mod.
✨ Players can now equip multiple backpacks, giving you better organisation and far more space for items. The amount of equippable slots can be changed in the config. When in the backpack inventory, you can navigate through all all your equipped backpacks using the arrow buttons at the top. Please note that only the cosmetic of the first backpack (left most occuiped slot) will be shown on the players back, not every backpack.
✨ Added a new block called the Backpack Dock. Previously Backpack Shelves were used as a method to transfer items in-world (e.g. using Hoppers), however that functionality has been moved into a dedicated block. This locks in the intentional design of Backpack Shelves, which should only storing and displaying backpacks, while the new Backpack Dock is for world interaction. To use a Backpack Dock, simply unequip your backpack (Press V) and then place the backapck in the open compartment on the front of the Backpack Dock. From there, you can connect hoppers to the block, or even modded pipes, to interface with the inventory of the backpack. You can also right click the Backapck Dock while a backpack to open the inventory GUI of the backpack.
✨ Added a new item called an Unlock Token. These don't have a crafting recipe as they are considered a reward item, which can be utilised by modpack developers. Unlock Tokens are simply an item that can be used to unlock backpack slots, augment bays, and equippable slots for free. There are config options to limit what Unlock Tokens can be used for.
✨ Add a sort button inside the backpack inventory to help orgnanise items. You can sort items by A to Z, Items First, Blocks First, Stack Size, Most Damaged, Creative Category, Mod Owner, and Shuffle.
✨ Backpacked now uses its own in-house solution for equipping backpacks. This means Curios API and Accessories is no longer necessary. This was an intentional decision to move away from these libraries, albeit the great utility they provide. Backpacked will be easier to maintain going into the future and not dependent on other mods being updated, or worse, discontinued.
✨ The backpack cosmetic shown on the players back will now bob while moving, adding to the immersion when in third person and when looking at other players.
✨ Backpacks are now drawn as 3D item in the inventory using the last selected cosmetic. This makes it easier at a glance to identify your different backpacks, just like coloured shulkers.
✨ The name of the backpack will now be drawn as a nameplate when looking at a backpack on a Backpack Shelf.
✨ Integration into JEI and You're in Grave Danger
✨ All backpacks and their challenges in the mod are now just simply JSON files, and use Minecraft's JSON model format. This is the new data-driven focus of the mod, and gives you more control.
✨ Rebalanced challenges from Backapcked 2.0.0 to unlock backpacks
