Aetheris v0.1 Beta

Environmental Immersion for Minecraft

Aetheris is a lightweight client-side atmospheric enhancement mod for Minecraft Fabric that makes the world feel more natural and immersive while preserving the vanilla aesthetic.

Instead of replacing Minecraft's visuals, Aetheris enhances them through dynamic fog, biome-aware atmosphere, weather effects, height-based fog, and smooth environmental transitions.

No new blocks. No gameplay changes. Just a more immersive Minecraft world.

What Does Aetheris Change?

🌫️ Dynamic Distance Fog

Mountains, forests, and distant terrain fade naturally into the horizon instead of ending abruptly, creating a stronger sense of depth and scale.

🌍 Biome-Aware Atmosphere

Every biome has its own atmospheric identity.

  • Forests feel denser.
  • Mountains appear colder.
  • Beaches remain bright and open.
  • Oceans feature natural-looking distant haze.
  • Rivers have a softer, moisture-rich atmosphere.

🌅 Time-of-Day Atmosphere

The atmosphere evolves throughout the day.

  • Warm sunrise lighting
  • Bright daytime visibility
  • Rich sunset colors
  • Cool nighttime ambience
  • Distinct Blue Hour atmosphere

🌦️ Weather-Aware Atmosphere

Weather now influences the environment.

  • Rain increases fog density.
  • Thunder creates darker, heavier conditions.
  • Clear weather restores visibility naturally.

⛰️ Height-Aware Fog

Atmospheric density changes with elevation.

  • Valleys feel deeper.
  • Plains remain open.
  • Mountains have thinner, clearer air.

🌊 Water & Ocean Improvements

Water environments receive their own atmospheric treatment.

  • Long-distance ocean haze
  • Enhanced underwater fog
  • Coastal atmosphere for beaches
  • River-specific atmospheric behavior

🔄 Smooth Environmental Transitions

Atmospheric changes blend naturally while exploring, eliminating harsh transitions between neighboring biomes.

Performance

  • Lightweight implementation
  • Fully client-side
  • Multiplayer compatible
  • No world generation changes
  • Optimized for everyday gameplay

Compatibility

Supported

  • Fabric Loader
  • Fabric API
  • Vanilla Minecraft
  • Client-side multiplayer
  • Most vanilla-style biome mods

Shader Compatibility

Aetheris is designed around Minecraft's vanilla renderer.

Many shader packs replace Minecraft's built-in fog rendering, which may partially or completely override Aetheris' atmospheric effects.

For the intended experience, vanilla rendering or shader packs that preserve vanilla fog are recommended.

Modded Biome Support

Many modded biomes are automatically supported through biome classification and biome tags.

Biome mods such as Terralith, Regions Unexplored, and William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld provide an excellent experience with Aetheris due to their environmental variety.

Unknown or heavily customized biomes safely fall back to a default atmospheric profile.

Known Issues

Aetheris is currently in v0.1 Beta, and the following improvements are already planned for future updates:

  • Ocean atmosphere can occasionally feel weaker than intended.
  • Atmospheric intensity over large oceans requires additional balancing.
  • Blue Hour atmosphere needs stronger visual identity and color refinement.
  • Some weather transitions can still appear slightly abrupt.
  • Certain biome combinations require smoother atmospheric blending.
  • Atmospheric tuning for a small number of biomes is still being refined.
  • Some shader packs override Minecraft's fog rendering, reducing Aetheris' visual effects.
  • A small number of heavily customized modded biomes currently use the default atmospheric profile.

These are known limitations and are actively being improved.

Future Plans

Upcoming updates are planned to include:

  • Stronger ocean atmosphere
  • Improved Blue Hour colors
  • Better atmospheric weighting
  • Expanded modded biome support
  • Additional biome-specific tuning
  • Further optimization
  • Dynamic cloud system
  • Ambient environmental soundscapes
  • Advanced weather effects
  • More atmospheric events

Design Philosophy

Aetheris follows one simple philosophy:

Enhance Vanilla, Don't Replace It.

Every feature is designed to preserve Minecraft's original art style while making exploration feel deeper, more immersive, and more alive.
