A dual-magic staff weapon system for Hytale: Nature vs Void
Harness the primal forces of Life and the Void through six uniquely crafted staff weapons. Each staff fires custom projectiles, grants powerful self-buff abilities, and scales its damage based on how much essence you carry into battle. Craft your way from a humble Sprout to the legendary Worldtree — or descend from a hairline Crack in reality to a full-blown Rift Gate.
🌿 The Verdant Staff Line (Nature)
Channel the raw power of nature through vine-wrapped staffs that grow more elaborate with each tier. Verdant Staffs fire Vine Bolt projectiles — fast-moving green bolts of living energy that burst into nature particles on impact.

Vine Bolt Stats: 12 damage, speed 55, zero gravity, green particle burst on hit.
Every tier fires the same 12-damage projectile — the damage value lives in the shared projectile JSON file. What actually changes between tiers is the cooldown speed. A Basic Verdant Staff has a 2.0s cooldown between shots, Attuned drops to 1.6s, and Legendary goes down to 1.2s. This means significantly higher sustained DPS at higher tiers even though each individual shot hits the same.
🌱 Nature Abilities (Right-Click — Self-Buff)
All Verdant abilities apply the Nature's Blessing effect to the caster — a green healing aura with nature particles, a green-to-dark tint on your character model, and +10 Health for 10 seconds. The visual effect is visible to all nearby players. Higher tiers reduce the ability cooldown but share the same base healing effect.
- Nature's Blessing (Basic) — Healing vines wrap around you. 10s duration, 15s cooldown.
- Grove Ward (Attuned) — Nature shields and heals you. 10s duration, 12s cooldown.
- World Root's Embrace (Legendary) — Ancient roots surge through you. 10s duration, 10s cooldown.
Each ability costs 2 Essence of Life to activate.
🌑 The Void Focus Line (Void)
Wield crystalline void geometry that fractures reality itself. Void Focus staffs fire Rift Pulse projectiles — slow-moving dark orbs with smoky trails and devastating purple void detonations on impact.

Rift Pulse Stats: 14 damage, speed 40, zero gravity, impact slowdown (0.5), custom Void Orb 3D model with purple glow, smoky purple detonation on hit.
Rift Pulse hits harder per shot than Vine Bolt (14 vs 12) but has longer base cooldowns. The same tier-based cooldown reduction applies — Basic starts at 2.5s and Legendary drops to 1.3s.
🔮 Void Abilities (Right-Click — Self-Buff)
All Void abilities apply the Void Aura effect to the caster — a dark empowerment surge with purple particles, a deep purple-to-dark tint, and an epic glow VFX for 8 seconds. The visual effect is visible to all nearby players.
- Void Sap (Basic) — Void energy surges through you. 8s duration, 15s cooldown.
- Entropy Field (Attuned) — An entropy field empowers you. 8s duration, 12s cooldown.
- Null Collapse (Legendary) — Reality warps around you, void power unleashed. 8s duration, 10s cooldown.
Each ability costs 2 Essence of Void to activate.
💎 The Essence System
There is no custom mana bar or abstract resource pool. Staffs are powered by vanilla essence items that you physically carry in your inventory. The plugin scans your hotbar and storage containers slot by slot, counting every stack of the matching essence type.
- Essence of Life (
Ingredient_Life_Essence) — Fuels all Verdant Staff attacks and abilities. - Essence of Void (
Ingredient_Void_Essence) — Fuels all Void Focus attacks and abilities.
The element matching is straightforward: if the staff's item ID contains "Verdant" it draws from Life Essence, if it contains "Void" it draws from Void Essence. No crossover — each line has its own dedicated fuel.
Costs per action:
- Attack (Left-Click): Consumes 1 essence per cast. The plugin removes from your hotbar first; if there isn't enough there, it falls through to your storage container. The removal is atomic — either the full amount is removed or nothing happens.
- Ability (Right-Click): Consumes 2 essence per activation. Same consumption logic, higher cost.
If you don't have enough essence, the spell simply won't cast — you'll get a chat message and no essence is wasted.
📈 Essence Amplifier — Stack for Power
After each cast consumes its essence cost, your remaining essence stacks in inventory boost your spell power. The formula is: 1.0 + (min(remaining stacks, 5) × 0.15)

The amplifier is calculated after consuming the cast cost. So if you have 8 Essence of Life and fire a Vine Bolt (consuming 1), you have 7 remaining — which exceeds the 5-stack cap, giving you the full +75% bonus.
The amplifier percentage appears in your cast feedback chat message (e.g. "Vine Bolt! (+75% essence power)") and is also displayed when you run /essence.

⚙️ Tiered Staff Progression
The tier system is a linear upgrade path where each tier literally consumes the previous staff as a crafting ingredient. You craft a Basic staff first, then feed that physical item into the Arcane Workbench along with rarer materials to produce the Attuned version, then feed the Attuned into a recipe to get Legendary. You cannot skip tiers.
What changes between tiers:
- Attack cooldown gets faster (e.g. 2.0s → 1.6s → 1.2s for Verdant) — more casts per second = higher sustained DPS.
- Ability cooldown drops (15s → 12s → 10s) — buff more often in extended fights.
- Item quality escalates — Uncommon (ItemLevel 10) → Rare (ItemLevel 25) → Legendary (ItemLevel 50), affecting tooltip styling and rarity color in-game.
🛡️ Buff & Cooldown System
When you right-click for an ability, three things happen simultaneously:
- The entity effect is applied via Hytale's built-in effect system — handling all visuals (particle systems, character tinting, glow VFX) and stat modifiers. Nature's Blessing applies green particles with a heal aura and +10 Health; Void Aura applies purple particles with an epic glow. These effects are visible to all nearby players.
- A cooldown is set — tracked using wall-clock timestamps per player per spell. If you try to cast again before it expires, you'll see a message like "Grove Ward on cooldown (7s)."
- The buff is registered for display — so
/essencecan show a live countdown (e.g. "Active Effects: Grove Ward (7s)").

All staffs are crafted at the Arcane Workbench (Arcanebench). Each tier requires the previous tier's staff plus additional materials.

🎨 Custom 3D Models & Textures
Every staff has a hand-crafted 3D model (.blockymodel) and a unique hand-painted 64×64 palette texture:
- Verdant line features growing organic shapes — leaves, vines, bark, and living wood that becomes more elaborate at each tier. The design philosophy is Sprout → Sapling → Worldtree.
- Void Focus line features crystalline void geometry — dark shards, rift energy, and fracturing crystal forms that grow more unstable and powerful. The design moves from Crack → Fracture → Rift Gate.
The Rift Pulse projectile uses a custom Void Orb 3D model with its own texture, hitbox, and purple glow trail.
All items appear in a custom Creative Library category called Twin Essences, organized into Nature and Void subcategories.

⚡ Quick Start
- Craft a staff at the Arcane Workbench (start with Basic tier).
- Gather essence — keep Essence of Life or Essence of Void in your inventory.
- Hold attack to fire projectiles (Vine Bolt or Rift Pulse).
- Right-click for your staff's special ability (self-buff).
- Hoard essence — more stacks = stronger spells (up to +75% bonus).
- Upgrade your staff through the three tiers for faster cooldowns and stronger abilities.
