About

This mod allows you to save your character's current in-game palette to a .png image. You can edit that .png and reload it to preview your changes.

Installation

Make sure you have the latest RCG2 Essentials installed. Extract to your RCG2 installation folder. The LiveEditPalette.dll should end up in the Mods folder.

Usage

By default, pressing F8 will create -LiveEdit.png inside your UserData/Palettes/[CharacterName] folder, if it has not already been created.

Pressing F8 again will reload that -LiveEdit.png and apply it to your character. Once you are done editing, rename -LiveEdit.png. The next time you load your game, your new edit will be assigned a palette index number.

Note: Do not change the .png extension when renaming and do not give it a name that starts with -, it is a character reserved for this and other mods.

Editing Tips

  • In general, it's best to modify similar colors similarly but there are exceptions.
  • Even if a color change doesn't appear to do anything, it may be in a frame you aren't seeing.
  • Even if a color change changes an element on most frames, there may be frames that use a different color slot for that element.
  • Keeping 2 & 3 in mind, beware of element collision, where two different parts of the sprite use the same color.
  • Sometimes colors aren't actually used at all or are for sprites that aren't actually in the game. Fun! Kunio and Kyoko are particularly guilty of this. (75% of Kunio isn't actually used.)
  • Each character has their own difficulties and challenges to make good edits out of. Provie is great for beginners, so just give it a shot! Kunio is nearly impossible to do anything with and will make you rage quit. (I hate Kunio.)
  • Check out Palette Pack: Championship Edition and compare the palettes in it to the default palettes to get a better idea of what to edit and what to expect.
