Description

Arthropod Phobia Expansions

ArPhEx - The ultimate arthropod horror+RPG mod with powerful stalking bosses, along with realistic arachnids, insects, centipedes, and more. A hardcore mod expanding far past the endgame with brutal enemies for those brave enough to face the challenge.

Note that the real life versions of all these arthropods are largely harmless, passive, or even friendly towards humans, and this mod does not intend to accurately represent their behaviours.

STALKER BOSSES

Beware the thunder

Truly overwhelming and ominous forces of nature - Survival will not be easy; these stalking, dweller-like boss entities are death incarnate, possessing advanced mechanics to terrorise and stalk you down from long distances. Ranged weapons (when possible) and high mobility recommended. Hallucination entities foreshadow their rare appearances, marked with a lightning strike. Also summonable, dropping powerful items on death.

Demon lords originating from another dimension of pure suffering, manifesting as hybrid arthropod abominations.

SPIDER MOTH

Overworld-exclusive spawns during thunderstorms. Avoids spawning near players that have killed it at full power. Like the warden, this entity is something to run from, not try to kill until you become very strong.

Spider Moth Dweller Boss

[BOSS]

Multiple phobias combine to create a nightmarish creature with high mobility, similar to Mothman folklore.

Wiki page:

https://arphex.miraheze.org/wiki/Spider_Moth

SCORPIOID BLOODLUSTER

Nether-exclusive spawns during rain+thunderstorm cycles. Avoids spawning near players that have killed it, or haven't warded off the Spider Moth twice.

 [BOSS]

An ominous flying demonic entity that can stalk you in the nether, adding a true horror element there. It is a hybrid of a scorpion and a mosquito.

Wiki page:

https://arphex.miraheze.org/wiki/Scorpioid_Bloodluster

DRACONIC VOIDLASHER

End-exclusive spawns during rain+thunderstorm cycles. Avoids spawning near players that have killed it, or haven't warded off the Spider Moth twice.

Draconic Voidlasher

 [BOSS]

A horrifying demonic entity with telekinetic powers lurks in the end, following you with teleportations. This one is a hybrid of a tailless whip scorpion and a dragonfly.

Wiki page:

https://arphex.miraheze.org/wiki/Draconic_Voidlasher

THE TORMENTOR

Spawns anywhere once activated by either killing the original three bosses and encountering an initial version in the overworld, or summoning it from an altar on the bottom layer of the Crawling dimension. Can be sealed or killed with extreme difficulty.

The TORMENTOR

 [FINAL BOSS]

A threat to eclipse the wither storm. The ultimate monstrosity, something not seen in any other horror mod: A true biome-sized eldritch horror capable of tormenting all nearby players. This monster is so powerful that nothing else can compete, and it is more comparable to an infection mod than a single entity. However, it can be sealed (its primary target should throw a "bane of the darkness" item into a crawling portal), or defeated by some of the most powerful ranged weapons in ArPhEx after a long multi-day fight. No matter how strong you are, this monster will likely pose a significant threat.

Wiki page:

https://arphex.miraheze.org/wiki/TORMENTOR

Planned additions: More Tormentor attack forms to add maximum variety across the course of the fight. Two more Crawling-exclusive full bosses to bridge the gap between the Tormentor and original three. Major sound improvements planned (these have not been a focus so far), and general further optimisations to existing mechanics.

ARTHROPOD EXPANSIONS

This mod features a wide range of high-detail, realistic arthropod mobs, focusing on those likely to induce phobias. Nearly all of them are uncommon, but many of them are strong, so beware if you encounter them!

Next three planned mob additions: Scorpion miniboss, trilobites, parachute spiders. Continuously improving existing mobs. More dungeons planned for the crawling and the overworld. Open to suggestions.

CURRENT:

Most added mobs can climb walls. Some of them can spawn in large groups. Some are tameable, or spawn in special structures. Minibosses ordered from strongest to weakest.

ITEMS + DETAILS

Information about the mod items and other details.ArPhEx includes many items, just as crazy as the mobs that drop them!

You can find a list of all items from the mod on the wiki here, along with all information how to obtain them (recipes, drops, and so on):

https://arphex.miraheze.org/wiki/Items

This mod is too complex to fully describe here without overloading the page with information. The wiki provides extensive information about all mobs and items, along with guides.

Bosses can stalk you anywhere until you kill them, giving a terror effect (screen shaking). You should run the other way if you encounter one, unless you have extremely powerful gear (post-wither/dragon). They are powerful enough to kill wardens, withers, and other strong mod bosses, yet fully possible to defeat with vanilla (ideally ranged) weapons and craftable items that slow them down. Any naturally-spawned version will stalk you down, keeping at a distance until you look at them or walk too close. Once triggered, they run, fly, or teleport towards you aggressively, breaking select blocks in their way, or forcing their way towards you through walls even if they get stuck. If you don't have the powerful tools necessary to kill them, you can usually get rid of them by dying, escaping to another dimension, or running far enough away that they despawn.

Some of the many powerful items include:

- Bane of The Darkness: Prevents stalker bosses from stealing your health, in addition to providing immunity to darkness effects and slowing the Spider Moth. Very crucial for fighting them - without it, you will have a serious challenge. Works just by being in your inventory.

- Mantle of Vitality: Provides immunity to wither, necrosis, and poison effects.

- Vitality Viewfinder: Hold right click while looking at any mob or player, and it will attempt to lock on and gradually reveal both their health percentage and their total max HP. Healthbars as an item! Or hit a mob with it in your off-hand to gauge your attack damage output as well.

- Silk Slinger and Tarantula Tether grappling hooks: Web slinger crafts from spinnerets dropped by black widow minibosses. Pulls you to walls and lets you hang from them, or pulls entities towards you. You can upgrade it to the more powerful tarantula tether, with double the range and power, plus automatic wall-climbing. You can also left click the top of a nearby block with either item to place a hook on the top, enabling you to rappel down from the block - you can pull yourself back up with spacebar or lock position with double jump.

- Crusher Claw weapon drops from the Crab Constrictor miniboss, providing a dangerous means of forcibly holding any entity in place and squeezing the life out of them. On holding right click, it slowly extends outwards until grabbing a targeted mob, preventing them from getting to you and dealing continuous damage.

- Formic Fireblaster flamethrower item can craft from "Scorch Charges", themselves crafted from "Burning Gland" items dropped by Ant Arsonist (fire ant) mobs, plus Chitin dropped by Millipedes and some beetles. When you hold right click, it blasts out fire, incinerating an unlimited amount of mobs at a time if they are right in front of you, or setting fire to the ground. Perfect for dealing with swarms of arthropods. If used continuously, it will need to cooldown periodically.

Ant Commander item can control worker ants in tamed colonies, directing them to build temporary defensive structures, mine stone, chop trees, and designate areas for them to stay in for these functions.

Black Widow Bow item serves as an upgraded bow that gives three effects on hit - withering, necrosis, and webbed. Additionally, it has no durability or ammunition limitations.

Weather Sensor item can toggle between two modes on right click - in thunder mode, it glows when a thunderstorm is happening, or in rain mode it glows when it is raining and not thundering.

- Bug Repellant item is craftable with an glass bottle, amethyst, and lapis lazuli. It slows and withers nearby arthropods when placed on the ground, lasting for around a minute. The more max-health the arthropod has, the less it will be affected.

- Dagger of Dissolution: Crafts from one necrotic fang (drop from funnel web spiders and giant hornets) and one venomous appendage (drop from sun scorpions). Like those mobs, it gives a necrosis effect on hit, acting like the opposite of resistance by amplifying damage taken to the affected entity and making them temporarily more vulnerable to all attacks.

- Potions of Necrosis brewable with water bottle and necrotic fangs or venomous appendages. Splash, lingering, and arrow variants available.

Necrosis (anti-resistance) damage mutiplier:

damage amount * ( (effect level + 3) / 2.5 )) / (armour points / 5)

(additionally, armour points ignored unless they exceed 5)

Killing stalker bosses gives you powerful crystal and gem items that provide strength when held. They can craft into a wide range of even more powerful unbreakable items.

Alternatively, some minibosses give you shards that can craft into the same items, so even if you have the main bosses disabled in config, you can still get every item.

Killing the Spider Moth boss gives you an abyssal crystal that can craft with other items to produce legendary abyssal tools. These strong tools come with numerous special abilities and glow to warn when you are being targeted for attack. Killing the Centipede Evictor miniboss gives you Abyssal Shards.

  • The abyssal blade is an unstoppable weapon capable of acting as a powerful sword, shield, ranged weapon, mobility item, and general protection item. It has further abilities, like weakening, slowing, and withering enemies, plus providing immunity to withering, necrosis, and darkness effects when held. You can dual wield for extra abilities, or hold an abyssal crystal or dagger offhand for additional powerful abilities.
  • The abyssal pickaxe is an unlimited mining tool capable of breaking two blocks at a time. Right clicking activates the double-break ability temporarily. If you have a Bane of the Darkness in your inventory, the right click also gives a minute of night vision. Right click with the Abyssal Blade (or upcoming Abyss Ascendant - also upgrades the efficiency level) in your offhand while this pickaxe is in your main hand for the option to temporarily switch from a fortune enchantment to silk touch.
  • The abyssal dagger crafts from the dagger of dissolution, serving as an upgraded unbreakable version of that item dealing a higher necrosis level on hit (plus weakness). It glows when targeted like the other abyssal tools, and provides invisibility when attacked along with slowing the attacker.
  • The abyssal axe is a powerful tool for destroying enemies and blocks. Breaks 2 blocks at a time (right click to activate ability for 10 seconds). Critical hits slow enemies and knock them downwards, along with dealing bursts of wither damage (increases level+radius with fall height) to other nearby entities, lifesteal, and resetting fall damage.
  • The block of abyssal crystal crafts from nine abyssal crystals, providing strength 2 to nearby players, more than a beacon.

Killing the Scorpioid Bloodluster boss gives you a fire opal gem that can craft with other items to produce powerful staffs with powerful mobility-based abilities. Killing the Spider Prowler miniboss gives you Fire Opal Shards.

  • The ascendant staff is an unbreakable staff that provides immunity to fall damage when held, along with an ability to float high into the air when right clicked. Left clicking fires projectiles that can give mobs levitation, making it an excellent defensive tool in multiple ways. Holding an ethereal staff in your offhand can boost the ascendant staff, enabling unlimited flight.
  • The ethereal staff is another unbreakable staff that gives you the power to literally walk through walls on right click (crouch to go down), along with providing strong immunity to suffocation when held. You can also use it to extend your jump distance. Hitting the ground places down a portal, then hitting the ground again teleports you back to the portal. Or hit a mob to teleport them to an active portal (portals are temporary) - only works on mobs with less than 100 max hp.
  • The hypnotic hellblaster flamethrower crafts from the weaker formic fireblaster, serving as an upgrade with more range, damage, faster cooldown times, and an ability to avoid damaging pets and items with airborne fire. It also gives fire resistance when held, but not when in lava.
  • The block of fire opal crafts from nine fire opals, providing saturation to nearby players so you no longer even need to eat.
Combining the two staffs (ethereal in offhand) can provide potentially unlimited flight.

Killing the Draconic Voidlasher boss gives you a void geode that can craft with other items to produce epic gauntlet items with telekinetic abilities, among others. Killing the Spider Reaper miniboss will also give you void geode shards.

  • The force gauntlet is an extremely powerful and useful item that gives you multiple telekinetic abilities. On holding right click, you can pick up mobs and items from a distance, throwing them, moving them around, pulling them in (crouch ability), or pushing them away on left click. Matches telekinetic abilities from shows and films, most notably Star Wars.
  • The chaos gauntlet is another powerful gauntlet that gives you the power to control mobs. Right click towards a mob to activate/deactivate control on them, or left click towards a mob to set/unset it as a target. You can set multiple controls and targets at once! The amount of time you can control for is determined by the maximum health of the entity you are trying to control. Targets last for 15 seconds. In creative mode, this tool functions differently, setting control and target for unlimited durations, plus making the targets automatically aggressive towards the control mobs - enables mob battles! Hit the ground while crouching to remove all nearby chaos effects.
  • The Vengeful Voidseeker crafts from the Formic Fireblaster, serving as an upgrade that can fire long range Void homing projectiles that deal significant damage. Crouch while firing to control them manually instead, and they will continuously follow your look direction.
  • The block of void geode crafts from nine void geodes, providing an ability to survive attacks that would have otherwise killed you, instead teleporting out of the way if you are standing nearby (this has a cooldown).

There are many more items available too, not detailed here.

For example, the Judgement Blaster, Vortex Devastator, and Arthropod Antenna.

Ultimate late-game items include the Abyss AscendantSpider Moth Summon, Ascended Block, and Tormentor Summon

Chitin Armour has three tiers, each more bulky and strong than the next. Found in dungeon chests and craftable directly with smithing-based upgrades. Comes with various special abilities including double jumping, Showing nearby entity locations when crouching, damage resistance from behind (beetle shell), and buffs given to pets, making it like a summoner class.

There are still many more weapons, tools, and items not covered here! Especially the newest and most powerful. Additionally, many more engaging mechanics exist in the mod, like the ability to tame an ant queen to gain your own self-replenishing ant colony! ArPhEx is a mod with incredible detail and expansive gameplay options. All of the latest information is kept up to date on the wiki: See the wiki for more information.

Summoning structures available for the stalker bosses - You need a Bane of the Darkness in your inventory. Then, simply place a block of soul sand atop a block of fermented spider eyes (for Spider Moth), block of scorpion flesh (for Scorpioid Bloodluster), or Block of Fly Flesh (for Draconic Voidlasher), and light it on fire:

Summoning altars for Terror Lords

Enjoy!

ArPhEx takes some inspiration from some of the craziest mods ever made, like Lycanite's mobs, Orespawn, and Chocolate Quest. Plus, takes inspiration from Terraria.

THE CRAWLING DIMENSION

ArPhEx comes with a special dimension called "The Crawling", featuring five biomes and four layers bypassed through conquering dungeons. There are multiple dungeon-style structures that can spawn in the both the crawling and overworld dimensions.

THE CRAWLING DIMENSION

A beautiful yet nightmarish realm of constant survival of the fittest. The Crawling is nature at its most brutal and apathetic - surviving in lower depths of this dimension will be perilous, even with the strongest gear. Five biomes, and four vertical layers that can only be bypassed through conquering special dungeons that lead from one layer to the next! Plus dangerous weather cycles - blood rain and fog can appear.

To access this dimension, there are a few steps. First, you can craft a "Crawling Compass" item that leads you to a huge overworld structure with a sphere in the centre. Inside this sphere are four pillars that you can light with scorch charges. Once lit, simply right click on the central "Crawling Barrier" block to activate a portal that leads you to the crawling!

To leave the dimension, you can find occasional portal structures on the top layer. A third of them have stone blocks and take you to the overworld. A third have netherrack blocks and take you to the nether, and a third have end stone blocks, taking you to the end dimension. They take you to a random location each time, so each venture into The Crawling is a dangerous endeavour.

But more dangerous still is if you try to descend to the lower layers of the Crawling!

When you're in the dimension, the Crawling Compass can lead you to dungeons on your current layer, either the nearest one to go down a level or up a level (sneak-right click to scan for dungeons to go back upwards).

Five biomes in the Crawling:

Crawling Canopy

Cryptic Complex

Decadent Desert

Webbed Wasteland

Tormented Tunnels
