Curse Client v4 - Windows

713 - The Curse Client should have a license agreement, even for beta versions

Submitted Via

Curse Client 4.0.0.605, Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

Description

The Client has no license agreement. Even though I realize this is a beta version, I would like to know (and have the option to agree or disagree to) what data is being collected, where it is sent, and how it is used. While I have a pretty good common-sense idea of what it might be, many users may not.

(Thank you for at least signing the code, though!)

Steps to Reproduce

Step 1: Install the client and have no idea or assurances about the data it is collecting, where it is sent, and how it is used.

Great! I'll go ahead and book a weekend when I'm at work tomorrow. If the client happens to be already released by that point and no longer needs testing, I'm wagering that a patch 3.3.0 PTR will be up and running for me to test then at least. :)

We will have a EULA ready long before December. It has to be reviewed by our lawyers though, which does take time.

The reason I'm asking this again is because we have an array of almost 30 computers in our testing lab that I've received permission to use this weekend. They all run various operating system and service pack combinations from Windows 2000 to Windows 7. They have different hardware and some even have buggy video drivers. (These are mostly failed desktop systems we have inherited over the years.) Some of them even have deliberatly broken .NET Framework installations engineered by our QA team to reproduce specific scenarios they have found to be common in the field.

I've received their permission to install WoW on the computers for PTR testing this weekend. (I'm going to look specifically for texture handling and shadow rendering issues with all these old video drivers, since those things caused MAJOR problems for a few thousand people in 3.2.0.)

I'd like to install CCv4 too and give it a spin. However, our QA manager won't allow Internet access for the testing lab without first reviewing an EULA for any extra software I install. (I've shown him the beta versions on my laptop, but he is concerned because he says different builds have been sending back different data in bug reports and usage profiles. That part just kinda flew right over my head.)

I'm not trying to pressure you, because I'm sure this kind of stuff involves lawyers and such. I'm just curious if an EULA might be available during beta testing so I can give it to our QA manager. The lab is already booked until early December (except Thanksgiving weekend, but I already have plans). But if you expect testing to still be going on in December and expect to have an EULA by then, I could book the lab for another weekend.

Can you comment on what data are being collected now, where it is being sent, and how it is being used?

I'm just curious, because your response to another one of my tickets was that I had a particular addon instsalled on my computer, but I didn't see that information anywhere in my ticket. (And in fact, it was not installed at the time of the ticket.)

I'm also curious because the .NET profiler was installed with the client. Are you collecting performance statistics about my computer?

    Edit: Typo.

We will have a license agreement in place before release.
