1128 - Require unique names for Game Instances
Submitted Via
Curse Client 4.0.0.710, Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Description
It is possible to use the same name for more than one game instance. This has potential for confusing users.

Adamar Mon, 26 Oct 2009 23:13:01Because names are edited in realtime, applying validation isn't really feasible. We're going to leave it up to the user to name their games whatever they like.

Edit: And, I agree that your sequel scenario, however improbable, would definitely be a problem.

Nandini Thu, 24 Sep 2009 23:49:06I hadn't though about the default naming scheme for game instances. It might also have potential for confusion if new (and supported) versions of a game are released and the titles of those games end in a number.
For example, if Frogster publishes a new supported game titled "Runes of Magic 2", and you have two copies of the original game installed and two copies of the sequel, you would end up with game instances named:
This is probably unlikely to happen in the lifetime of CCv4, but you never know!
Maybe parentheses or brackets or the hash symbol could be employed going forward to make this clearer. For example:
I'm not sure I like using the installation path as part of the game instance name, however. This might be intuitive for users who are used to managing their addons for multiple installations of the same game, but would be ugly and potentially confusing for players with only one copy of a particular game. Perhaps the installation folder could be included in a mouseover tooltip for those buttons if it would be helpful.
